I grew up on Vancouver Island born in the 50's. We used to play with what we called "Woodbugs." We grew up in the coastal Rainforest areas that are scarce now. The other little guys we played with were our native Millipedes. Not very large but very peaceful. The Isopods that we always enjoyed finding were the shiny gray bugs that rolled up into a marble type ball. I just discovered you (yes you have been discovered 😁) thanks for bringing back great memories.
Never thought I'd say that but I find some of them have such cute faces and pretty colours :) I'd be very curious to see which ones you keep with your geckos and more general care tips. My favourite ones are the black and white ones and the rubber duckies :) they all look like little terrestrial shrimps haha
Reptiliatus thank you for sharing 🙂👌🏻 knowing how useful these little shrimpies are for the soil and plants wherever they live i have quite some new found respect for them ☺️
Although I love all the amazing coloring that different species get, I can't help but say my favorite is the Armadillo Officinalis. Adorable little derp-tanks.
I used to be majorly creeped out by these besties we call them wood louse in the UK but after watching your videos I've fallen in love with them too! Theirs so cute! Thank you so much for making such brilliant content and helping me over come my back shivers when I see one :) x
I thought I’d be worth saying that Cubaris sp. “Amber” is not of the “Ducky” variety. There are some major differences between them. Such a gorgeous species tho. I’ve got a nice colony myself :)
Pedes & Pods thank you for that! I feel the morphological differences are very apparent as well but I hear “ducky” get tossed around quite a bit it’s certainly worth knowing! I’ll refrain from calling them that! Thank you for watching!
Oh gossdddhhhhhh those Amber duckies!!!! ;~; So cute! I hope they get more common in the hobby, I would die for them. And the rubber duckiessssss♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️
for the thai species, i have had some luck using pieces of limestone that I drill holes it as when I have previously found them they are almost always near a crack of a limestone wall. Also agree on the powder as well. Thailand has lots of new species coming soon :)

What temps do you keep them at? Do you have heating elements or leave them at room temp? Then what room temp do you have? Wonderful video or many species and varieties. I'm going to pick up a few starter cultures soon.
I have some questions! I am looking into creating cultures for 2 species: The Dairy Cow variety and powder blues! How often do you feed them? And do you mist them daily? I am going to use eco earth as a substrate with leaf litter on top. Where did you get your bark? I also noticed you poked hole around the edge of your container. Should I create more ventalation for those I will have? Thank youu! Love the video!
Hi! Awesome video! I would like to ask if there is any group or place you would recommend to hang out to learn/exchange info on isopods. I have just caught 30 or more Philoscia sp. ”Thai” (you can google them, the males have red patterns, females are greyish), in spring (after they establish themselves and weather improves) would you like me to send you a starter colony? I am in South China. Hope to see further isopods updates! Cheers!
ANTS 853 thanks so much! Would love some but unfortunately they aren’t legal to send that way without permits/paperwork! I appreciate the offer! I’m actually hoping to acquire some in a few months ;). Thanks for watching!
@@Reptiliatus Ok, i wasn't sure about isopods. Fully understand! Another topic, since you live in Canada, I would like to ask how to heat your colonies? what is the minimum acceptable temperature before you start to worry? Thank you, Cheers!
how has your bolivari culture come along, i just recently ordered P.nicklesi and I heard they have similar care. are you still having trouble with the females?
@@Reptiliatus awesome, congrats man. if you don't mind me asking, whats your water routine for these guys. I heard they like it dry and Im afraid of going overboard.
Its funny you mentioned about how everybody got their own thing, ive been thinking about the same for a while now since i killed a culture of p. magnificus and p. Haasi and yet managed to breed bolivari within 2 months from a group of 15 juveniles. I dont know what im doing correctly with bolivari and how i failed with haasi and magnificus. Im about to receive spatulatus, so they like rotten woods? Any other tips with spatulatus would be great. I just subscribed to your channel today.. Thanks.
Maybe one of you isopod experts can help me with this one. So I wanna keep some isopods BUT in the same habitat with fire ants (myrmica so not as aggressive and bigger red ants). I put some in my current tank with different ants with bad results do yall know a certain type of isopods or some sort of hiding area I can build so they can avoid the ants? I'll have them in a massive tank so space or territory won't be the issue. Isopods would fit perfectly along with some other creatures I tested with ants I just don't know how to pull of the isopod thing
Maybe dwarf white isopods, but it sounds like ants are aggressive towards rolly polys. Dwarfs are small and are parthenogenetic so even if ants do prey on on them they can still reproduce. I’m not a millipede expert but some I think make a poison gas (it’s probably just one species) that would prevent ants for wanting to eat (do not quote) my final animal recommendation that is used as a clean up crew would be your best bet and that is spring tails they are too small for ants to even care but are no way as cool as isopods
I couldn't help but think of Mike Bustos, Antz Canada Series, and with that I thought..what about, Isopod United States? I always watch Mikes Blog more than his Ants Canada, so Idk, but it's very popular and, well idk, just thinking , lol! Merry Holidays !!
