I've made a few different types of bar clamps over the years and while they all worked, I wanted to improve on them. I think I achieved it! These homemade bar clamps needed to be heavy duty and easy to adjust. If the method I've used has already been done I couldn't find it after thoroughly searching the net.
I plan on making a couple more, without any welding by making the head and foot out of timber. They will be a lot easier and quicker to make. I'll make another video soon.
I apologise for the sound. Its been pretty hot here the last couple of weeks (mid 30's), I had my industrial fan going and didn't realise (being new to making video) how detrimental that would be to the sound quality. I'm still learning the ropes here! I put music over the top, which I didn't want to do, if it gets too much please mute the sound.
I'm very happy to answer any questions.

Wow I absolutely love these clamps. Nothing will wear them out and they’re built to perfection. Brilliant video Neil 👍🏼👍🏼
Your a real craftsman. learned great tricks from this video👍
Whaaa, I had never watched this one. You are really gifted !
Just catching up on some of your videos. Really good clamps, and I reckon they'll never bend or break 👍 Bloody brilliant 👍👍
I freaking love your videos! The editing is superb! Thank you for all the effort and work!
Just found your channel Neil, I like the fact you are making tooling to a custom design but with materials that are very much available at not too high a price.
SO impressive!! I started watching thinking, "geez, would never do this...so much effort." But by the time I was finished I was thoroughly impressed with your skill and ingenuity.
Thank you very much!
good job! a LOT of work!!!
I love your engineering skills!!!!!
Nice job
I've watched this video like 5 times. Know why? That music gets me all the time. I just love it. It's a happy, goofy and plain old fun tune. Lol.
And I like your work.
Wow! 5 times - I'm glad you're enjoying it Tony! :)
How brilliant! Great ideas and your video is terrific too. Many thanks!
Wow! Thank you!
Brilliant mate!
Just found your channel, and super happy I did. Looking forward to binge watching over the holidays! Thanks for sharing your creative solutions with the world. Joel......
No worries - Thank you!
Excellent!
When our sweat drops down and our created mind is turned on, our product is happiness.
I like the way you drill holes into the side plates and then use them to spot-weld the inner components in place where you can easily weld to the edge of a piece, that's quite clever and would help a lot with alignment I think. :-)
A Master Craftsman ! This rules, thanks for making amazing inspiration , stoked to subscribe... I love how you used the new clamp to clamp those wood face pieces in place so awesome .
Thank you very much!
Amazing!!
Watched 5 of your videos last night, 3 of them are projects im about to undertake!
Love your work, we have a bit in common i think!
Your execution is really nice though, much more ordered and flowing than my haphazard style at the moment!
Working on building a shed to streamline things a little, hopefully!!
Trusses almost built, frames are salvage from a golf simulator, wiggly tin came off a winery that was having a change of colour, hurrah!!
I just discovered your channel thanks to instructables. Great Videos!!! I paused binge watching your videos just to write this.
Thank you! Keep watching, I plan to continue posting new content regularly.
Good job i really like the idea is perfect
It amazes me what you make without the benefit of a machine shop at your disposal.
Very innovative & resourceful.
Thank you! You just have to manage with what you have and try not let it limit you. :)
ogenmatic kiju jhgjh
Those came out really well! I like the use of threaded rod. I imagine they have pretty good clamping force as well.
Thanks! Yes they have plenty of clamping force.
I'm a huge fan of your recent content, and only just watched this. The editing is very cute and fun, I love it :D
I love you PASK very much,God bless you
Amazing Job
excellent idea , good work !
Inetersnoe very useful. Now do the same for his workshop!
That's pretty clever, thanks for sharing it!
I saw a video recently (sorry can't remember who's channel) where the same idea, using threaded rod and a sawed off nut, was used to align a table saw fence, so you could always return it to the same 1/16" position.
Well done!
Thank you! Yes I have seen it used on different jigs for indexing but not on a bar clamp for grip.
Yeah Carlin Comm I saw that video as well! I think it was "Marius Hornberger"
carlin, any idea where i can find that video?
Michael Aldan its on a channel called Jers Workshop
Great idea.
Brilliant! Found you through instructables. Also took a peek at your website, absolutely jaw dropping! Thank you for sharing your great work. Looking forward to seeing more!
Wow, thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed my website!
Very well done. An inspiration.
Thank you :)
Incredible.
Great show of process man, really nice build! :)
Thank you!
brilliant!
and you do a great job they look great! I did not mean it as a put down! In fact I admire your stick to it tive ness
Thank you!
those look great! one more reason I need to learn how to weld.
Thanks. I'm in the process of making similar clamps using wood - no welding involved. Should be a video soon.
Let's Make Something Awesome Together looks like we watch the same content. How about a build-off between the three of us?
I was chatting with another youtuber about doing a collab video. I thought it would be fun to think of a project and each build it in our own way.
Maybe we should get a bunch of smaller youtubers (less than 2,000 subs) to participate in a holiday design challenge?
Sounds cool to me!
Yeah sounds cool. Ill send both of you a PM with my emaila address and you reply yours so I can setup a group mail.
Very, very, Very good man!!!
good engineeri awesome thanks for making the video one day I will make some for my workshop .
Thank you! Go for it!
Hi There,
I'm a new subscriber, and love your channel. I find for weekend warriors like myself, its not just about making the clamps and possibly saving a few bucks, its about honing your skills regularly... research the project,...design the project...some metal cutting...some grinding... some welding...filming and editing... and uploading to UA-cam, always learning from past projects and constantly improving your skills. Keep it up and ignore the haters, its just envy! Cheers from Fremantle WA...
Thank you very much! :)
Dude this guy is so badass. I gotta learn to weld
Really cool!! I really like those. I am going to learn to weld.
Thank you! Having a welder is very handy tool to have around, you will find you use it all the time!
awesome
Tap Magic will keep your drills and taps in much better condition than 3 in 1. Seriously, it’ll change your life.
Great job, i'm about to build my owns, can you tell me the size and thickness of the materials you used?
I think your right to get a clamp of this size and strength you would be spending far more that these costs to make. And it's fun! Great video!
Thank you - I agree!
These are great! I think I will definitely try to make them in the future. I do have one question on the sliding end of the bar clamp, I've seen plenty of craftsmen use "even" clamping pressure on both the top and bottom of say a table they are working on. When you flip these upside down to clamp the top, does the half nut still engage. Just curious as the gravity creates the lever for the nut to press into the threaded rod, from what I can see.
Thanks!
Thanks Trent - glad you like them! They work fine upside down too. :)
GREAT Video! This Video was in my suggestion lineup. Glad I clicked. Thumbs Up and Subbed! There are a TON of tips here that I picked up! Really inspirational! Looking forward to seeing ALL your Videos. Have A Super Week!.....Gus
Thank you very much! Glad you enjoyed it!
Good job ! Saludos from Peru 🇵🇪
Great job, I'm about to make the wood ones
Just found your channel. Good videos. Nothing better than a homemade tool.
Thanks! I agree - I get more enjoyment using homemade tools!
Very nice!
good job
I just subed to your channel. I'm really liking your videos! Keep up the good work, sir!
Thank you Vincent! :) Glad you're enjoying them. :)
Man you need a bottle on that Mig. I guarantee you would enjoy it ten fold.
Yes that would be great! I did invest in a tig setup 3 months ago and I still haven't had chance to try it out.
Pask Makes oh you will love it once you get the hang. I'll tell you just practice practice before you want to use it on something. You will get a bit frustrated at first but after a bit it starts getting easier then it's bang beauty welds.
oye muy buenos, creo que son los que han llevado mas trabajo de los que he visto.. gracias por compartir...
Gracias! :)
WOW, just went to your instagram acct and some fabulous work . I'm very impressed. Great talent!
Thank you! I appreciate the feedback!
wow!!!!! great job
Thanks!
Oh man, that's awesome.
Cheers!
Looks very profesional! :D I have one question - isn't too thin the steel strip trough which the pushing screw passes? I'm sorry for my English if it is incomprehensible.
Thanks Pawel! That piece probably should have been thicker, even though it is still standing up to anything I've thrown at it so far. :)
Thanks for info ;)
Pask Makes - The supports are excellently made ... but it is cheaper to buy them from the factory. Greetings my friend --- Excelentemente bien hechos los soportes... pero es mas barato comprarlos de fábrica. Saludos mi amigo.
Really good stuff! You deserve more subscribers!
Thank you, glad you enjoyed it! My channel is still very young, I'll keep plugging away.
Max Maker You earn subscribers, not deserve them.
Great video !!! 😃
Thanks!
great music and a great job. l brought a load of threaded rod from Masters for a dollar a length the other day l wondered what l was going to do with it all
Thanks! $1 a length - good find. I've been meaning to get to a Masters to see what bargains they've got.
I wish you didn't live so far away...Just stumbled on this from last year...Still no snow? cheers...rr
Those look very cool! Can I get some plans for those?
great!!! good job
Thanks
Nice work!! In 10 minutes you show us how to build these 8 clamps!!
It seems like strong pieces... however I don't have welding equipment and so I think I'll see your wooden version.
Anyway, it´s a pleasure to see your work!!
Best regards from this side of the world (Portugal... almost the other side of the world ;) )
Thank you Victor! The wooden ones are easy to make. :)
Fortunately for you, you have the necessary tools and skill sets that allow you to craft those really nice clamps. For some others it's just a dream and much easier to buy clamps as needed from where ever they can get them. You have done an extremely detailed video showing the exact steps and procedures and for that alone, you are to be commended! Great job!
Thank you very much! You are right, it's much easier to buy clamps but I do enjoy making tools. I've just made a wooden version of these clamps to make it easier for others to make their own - still a bit of work but much less so than these ones (should be a video and plans out in the next few days).
woodstoney It is much easier for the maker of this video to also buy the clamps. That's what I'd suggest he do.
Yes easier to buy and thanks for the suggestion - but I enjoyed coming up with an idea and making the clamps. Now I have 8 clamps that will last me a lifetime and give me pleasure every time I use them. Also they cost less than $20 a clamp which is very cheap for an easy to use heavy duty clamp - I realise that doesn't include my time but if thats how I like to spend my time then its all good.
Nice!
Очень хорошая идея! Просто и доступно.
I would love to see you make a wooden/non welding version ;-)
I did, the video was titled 'easier homemade bar clamps'. :)
Great build and video! thanks... but man alive that looks like a lot of work.
Cheers! There was a bit of work involved - not too bad though.
wow, this is awesome! i just wonder is it worth the time and effort, meaning is it cheaper to make than to buy new ones?
Those are really cool.
Cheers!
geniussss
thats a very cool design. good effort.
Thans Jamie! :)
Did you make the clamps you employed during the build of this project?
congrats, I see you have plenty of tools, I have cuestion, way do you put the piece of plywood as fence on your mitersaw? ( minute 8:06)
Thanks! The piece on the fence was an experiment that works pretty well to support the work piece when cutting mitres - no help with 90 degree cuts though. Because it was an experiment I fixed with hot glue and it fell off the other day - it's been on there for months though.
Super!
good job i like it
que bonito, felicidades !!!
Gracias Carlos! :)
Wow! Really clever! Subscribed ;)
Thank You!
very good
Thank you!
Ain't nothing wrong with flux core. Sure it is messy but it works. Used it when I welded a roll cage into my race car, when I learned to weld. Just a little more clean up if you have to.
I agree Brian! Thank you! :)
So used to the audio from the newer videos. Hearing this stock youtube music had me reeling. LMAO
Looks cool, your not so average bar clamp! Is the green plate next to the handle stiff enough?
It's a good question. When I made my prototype I used 5mm flat bar for the end - I didn't have enough in stock to make these 8 clamps so I used 3mm. The 5mm would be better but I've put a straight edge to the end and they don't show any sign of bending so far - if they do I'll beef them up a little. Thanks!
wow awesome
Cheers!
I loved the video, no obnoxious music, commentary, dog barking super loud machine noises or mouth breathing of the videographer :) however, for some reason, I had trouble watching it due to the very bright welding footage, I am not sure what the issue is, perhaps the other similar you-tube fabrication videos i have seen were processed with a light spectrum filter that dimmed the brightness on those sections, perhaps they put their go-pro inside the welding helmet, I don't do videos so i am not sure how to fix the issue, but i think your stuff is great, and wanted to mention that to you. If I have offended you I apologize, it was not my intent. I was just getting a headache and wanted to let you know something you may want to look into. Great stuff though, it answered the questions that I had perfectly.
Thanks very much Russell! Filming welding is difficult and the problem is having an exposed shot before you press the trigger and then still being exposed while welding. I do have a x1000 ND filter, I haven't tried that and it may be too strong but if it did work it would only show the welding and none of the surrounding environment. :)
fantastico tu trabajo
¡Gracias Antonio! :)
Parabéns...
Lindo trabalho.
Thank you!
Do you still use gas with your flux core wire ? I haven't used gas on mine and it's always been messy .
very nice work
Thank you!
Are there any plans I can find of these clamps, really wanna build some but I need to know how much material I would need?
I didn't make plans but I did for my 'easier bar clamps', they were made with plywood but are very similar and those plans(free) could help you. You can find them on my website.
I know about those plans. The only part I can't know from them is what is the actual thickness of the sheet of steel you are cutting all the parts out of.I have some scrap 2 mm sheet but I don't know is it strong enough.
2mm will be plenty strong enough, if I remember I think I used 2mm. :)
That's what it looked like to me, just needed to be sure. Thanks. I'll email you some pics when I finish if you are interested :D
Pretty awsome.
Thanks!
Very clever.... Thanks for sharing! Just discover a new channel to follow! 😀
Thank you!
bravo, complimenti
Grazie!
Although I've watched this many times, I have to ask. What are you sprinkling on those metal pieces?
Do you mean when I'm drilling - if so that's oil (3in1) I use as a cutting fluid.

Never seen someone using a stop block for a stop block 👌
