  • Join us once again on Expedition Weekly as we look at the closed history of the Gremlin Invasion Dark Ride otherwise known as Warner Bros Classics and The Great Gremlin Adventure. Existing both at the Australian and Germany parks featuring Beetlejuice and ALF this ride offered a unique gremlin experience before it was closed and replaced with Scooby Doo Spooky Coaster and the Van Helsing Factory.

    I worked on the Australian version for a few years until it closed - lots of fun to work on. I remember losing my voice a few times after 2 hours of running into cinemas screaming that the gremlins has escaped from the film vaults. You always knew your acting was spot on when children started crying.

      Alf was extremly popular here in germany, while Beetlejuice was never a really big thing. So it was a target group decision. Loved the ride, especially in the helloween edition, where the whole ride was decorated with spider webs and such.

      Alf really had a weirdly huge amount of popularity here. I remember in the late 80's & early 90's there was Alf everywhere, Toys, T-shirts, comics, mugs, plushies. I think if I would dig through the rest of my old toys in the attic I would find more than one version of an Alf toy.
      We seem to be so hung up on him that in this year's German version of _I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!_ the guy who did Alf's German voice was among the "celebrities" sent to the jungle :D

    Gremlins was the best attraction by far Warner Brothers build in Germany. Loved the scenes with Gizmo and Alf together, loved the atmosphere, the preshow, it was just awesome!

  • @Soonjai
    @Soonjai 5 років тому +54

    The german version most likely recieved Alf instead of Beetlejuice because even at the time Alf was a way more popular character here.
    After the closure of the ride in 2004 it wasn't disassembled until several years later, the entire ride System including all Show Scenes and Animatronics where left intact inside the building. The Ride was used from 2004 to 2008 (some say even in 2009) as a Halloween only Attraction. The Animatronics where covered up and instead they had several Live Actors inside the building that tried to scare the riders.

    Alf was a popular character in Germany at the time. Personally, I find that version of the ride the superior one as Alf and Gizmo actively try to stop the Gremlins. In the Aussie version, Gizmo tries on his own to stop them with a few random appearances from Beetlejuice.

    I’m glad to see you covering Warner Parks. They definitely deserve more love and attention. Something you didn’t mention that would have been great to is in the German version a bunch of the ALF animatronics are still there. He appears on old time directors chairs on cranes. The cranes and the animatronic were too much effort to remove so they didn’t. To this day ALF still sits in the chair above the coaster watching hope the ride will get a revival one day.

    Here are some facts about the german version:
    One Alf Animatronic is still in the Ride's building to this day... (Watch an onride and wait for the scrapyard scene and then look into the crane)
    There is one gizmo animatronic in a shelf in the maintenance area. (2012)

    The main queueline room is one of the old preshow theatres

    The (human) cast of ALF hated the show and it's puppet. The stage floor was mostly trap doors, and the cast couldn't look down. So they had to be careful to not fall into a trapdoor that was either for the puppet, or one the puppet was going to move to. The girl that played the daughter nearly broke her leg from one.

I vividly remember one or two very large gremlins that were so scary to me that I started crying (I was like 5 or 6 at the time, so....). Unfortunately, I don’t really remember Beetlejuice all that well as I was pretty young, save for the police cars at the end, which is a shame because Beetlejuice is one of my favourite movies!

    Wow. I remembered this from Australia. I was so young then. They started with that blooper reel and the seats were very cushy ("are you all doing okay in those comfy seats?" said the male guide). Then the gremlins silhouettes appeared. The two guides, male and a blonde female, rushed back in and screamed at us to evacuate the theatre into the carts. It seemed so real. Their acting was very convincing.
    I was wondering if they wanted to evacuate, why were the carts moving so slowly. Gremlins at every corner, with film storage racks almost falling on you. It made me flinch as it almost touches your head. My mum was wondering why the flinch. The bigger gremlins sprayed water from hoses at one another. My dad got a few drops on his left shoulder. There were some other scenes like in the video.
    At the end there was an audio of a police car crash. We exited the cart to see this totalled and smoking police car with a cute mogwai at the wheel and the police officer walking away. I don't recall he was beetle juice as I didn't watch the movie that time.
    It was very immersive at the time. I thought it was a real emergency.

There are quite a few past attractions between Dreamworld and the Village Roadshow Theme Parks (Movie World, Sea World [which is a different company than America's but with a similar content] and Wet n Wild) that would make amazing videos!

    I went to the German version as a kid.
    WBMW Germany was a really cool park.
    Fact: the park was not sold to star park by poor attendance. It was sold as one of the element of a bigger deal: the rétractation of six flags from all Europe ( they were in financial trouble at the time and sold all of their European parks).
    I guess we can say the park has been on a series of unfortunate events.
    The irony is that today it belongs to a group who has managed to have the WB licence ( for the Spanish park ). So if all the theming didn’t get removed back in the day, the park probably would still exist as Warner bros movie world today.

    • @carlosmarx2380
      @carlosmarx2380 Рік тому

      no it wouldnt. Parques Reunidos doesn't actually own the Warner Bros. IPs, but they share the park's ownership with Warner Bors. themselves, as far as i know. so unfortunately in the near future, its not possible to regain Warner IPs for Movie Park, since Warner doesnt co-own the park.

    • @Nicotrz
      @Nicotrz Рік тому

      @@carlosmarx2380 not saying there is any chance to see Warner bros IP in the park today =) I don’t believe it either.
      My point is more that if the Warner bros theme wasn’t removed in the first place, maybe parque reunidos would have find an arrangement with WB to keep the theme as is.
      Obviously today, it’s too late :(

    This was my favorite ride as a kid and I still miss it. Warner Brothers movie world was my favorite park as a kid after Efteling and Disneyland Paris but the park is nothing like it used to be. It used to have great story driven rides that were greatly themed, now it is just an attraction park like so many others...
    ALF was in it because he was extremely popular in Germany with even made for tv movies getting into cinemas there.

    • @carlosmarx2380
      @carlosmarx2380 Рік тому

      thats not true. movie park still tells stories in their rides and shows. Van Helsing is amazing, altho not that story driven, but amazing theming, Bermuda Triangle recently got a new story line (now Area 51), Mystery River finally got a story line and new theming (Excalibur) + an amazing new que-line. Time Riders is pure storytelling. Lost Temple is pure storytelling(altho the film itself is just okay). Their new studio tour has a story too, and even features lots of throwbacks to the gremlins ride (even actual clips from the gremlins pre-show during the halloween version of the ride)
      Even the Star Trek coaster has a storyline. and dont forget Halloween Horror Festival.
      I agree that its not the same as back then, but saying "its just another attraction park" is just not fair. Also, look at Movie World in Australia. THIS is just another attraction park. They got rid off all the themed rides and shows and replaced them with blanco coasters, one really really bad shooting dark ride, and the scooby doo ride, wich isnt really good either and doesnt have much theming at all. even the stunt show there sucks and its their only major show. They even replaces the Looney Tunes river ride with a lame driving school for children (wich is really cool for kids, but the parents cant do anything in terms of having fun). Movie Park on the other hand, has a driving school outside AND a themed indoor attraction in the old Looney Tunes building. Just to compare both the parks.
      After informing myself on the australian version i'm glad that we have Movie Park Germany.

    Just visited Movie Park Germany again after many years. Was a big fan of the Batman and Gremlin rides! Here is a fun tip: If you go ride the "Movie Studio Tour" Roller Coaster (fairly new, good ride too!) you can spot several props from the old rides. There is a Batman cowl on a desk in the waiting line (easy to spot). And a Gremlin animatronic (not moving) with a hat and sunglasses on during the ride on one of the moments the coaster makes a brief stop in the archives. (Didn't even spot it the first time). They probably had to disguise it because they no longer have the rights to use it!
    One more fun fact: The animatronic of Wile E Coyote used in the waiting area of the Road Runner 4D movie is the same one from the Looney Tunes indoor Log Flume ride that closed on the same day as the Gremlins/Batman rides. Very cool they still had it and working after almost 20 years!

    • @carlosmarx2380
      @carlosmarx2380 Рік тому

      its funny they still have the animatronics, since officially they had to destroy/send back all of the WB stuff in 2004. on paper they are gone, but i've heard from several sources that many of them are still in storage at the studio area behind the park (not only the ones in the Roxy theater). I bet if they regained a Batman license, they could instanly rebuild the old ride without ordering any new stuff haha

    Great video, nice to see something about our parks in Australia
    I had forgotten all about that ride, but I did go on it back when the park opened.
    There are other rides at Movie World theme park you could cover in future video's like the Loony Toons boat ride and many more. I did enjoy a lot of the rides over the years as I did work at the studio section on different shows.
    You could also cover the boat ride at Dreamworld (just up the road from Movie World ) that had a boat turn over and killed four people.
    Movie World Studios may be known to some people as it is the studios where we shot some budget films like the latest "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Thor Ragnarock" and "Aquaman".
    Now there is an Aquaman display in the Movie World park of sets, costumes and prop you can see up close

    Facts to the Germany Version that I think have missed:
    Alf is still in the Housing of the old Gremlins Building, You can see them at the Second Left on you're right driving the Crane.
    The 4 Cinemas that were use in Gremlins still Exists with Projectors but without Seats and Color. Only one has been Change to the Pre Show Scene in the Auto repair shop.
    The Electric execution still exsits in the ride and would be "Full Functional" if you turn it on
    Before Van Helsing was build, Gremlins Invasion was used to be The Dark Gold Mine in 2009, The ride was in Complete Dark and Actors were Scaring People while riding the ride.
    Great Video ! :) Keep it on mate

  • @Gigidag77

    The german version of this ride remained SBNO for 7 years because the animatronics were still technically owned by Warner Bros. Corporation and star parks literally weren't allowed to remove them from the ride. Warner Bros. corp wouldn't "pick them up" and demanded an undisclosed amount of money to sell them instead, wich star parks did not want to pay. During halloween season the ride would open briefly as a a horror themed darkride with live actors. It was called "Terror Train" and in later years "The dark goldmine". The gremlins animatronics were just covered by plastic bags as star parks had no license to display them but also weren't allowed to remove them as I said before.
    During the first few halloween seasons after 2004, (when the ride was called "terror train"), the animatronics' eyes were still lit up by red leds for a "spooky" effect of you being watched by "something" in the dark.
    After parques reunidos bought the park, they were able to strike a deal with warner bros. and remove the gremlin animatronics from the building. A few were raffled out to park fans during special events but most remain in the parks' posession in some on-site warehouse to this day. One animatronic of Alf can still be seen on the new Van Helsing's Factory coaster sitting inside a bulldozer cabin. One Animatronics of Gizmo is located inside the rides maintenance area. It used to sit underneath the Hood of one of the cars in the "scrapyard" section of the coaster, but was removed from there shortly after the coasters' opening. (possibly because Warner Bros. again took issue with it being able to be seen by the parks visitors without any license paid by P.R.)

    My family and I used to LOVE Movie World. We started going back in 1991 (when it first opened). My two sisters and I would always ask (beg) our parents to take us there whenever we went to the Gold Coast. We loved the Looney Tunes River Ride (my personal favourite), this ride (The Great Gremlins Adventure Ride), the Studio Backlot Tour (a shuttle bus tour where you got to visit movie sets, hear how they added sound effects to the movies etc.). All of that is gone now. Last time I was there (a few years ago), all there really was to do was ride on rollercoasters [which none of my family (myself included) have ever really cared for]. They should just call it "Warner Bros. Coaster World" now, as that is basically what it is. Compared to what the park used to be, there is not much variety at all anymore. If you don't care much for coasters, you are out of luck. We miss these awesome dark rides the most. Sad to say this (since we loved the park so much as kids) but none of us have any interest in ever returning to the park ever again.
