JBL Charge 4 a Look Inside!

  • Almost a complete tear down of the new JBL Charge 4 (J version). This Charge 4 has been just about completely torn down, even more so then most other video's I've seen so far.
    Also yes the BT range is still intact after re-soldering the BT antenna wire :). The rest of this speakers reassembly went without a hitch.

    There is a charge 4s. They have a thicker coating on the speaker driver, and the wires are soldered to the speaker. No compatible parts between the two, except maybe the motherboard. The plastic casing on the S version does not have the ribs to the left of the speaker, it is completely smooth. The grill of the S version is also clipped in from the back like this, but the front side is screwed in. The flip 5 was also mono, but I hope they go back to stereo with the charge 5. Maybe the flip 6.

    Stereo sound in this form factor makes no sense, for stereo to even work you need to have space between the speakers, an equilateral triangle with you in the middle is how stereo sound performs best, that simply isnt possible in this small form factor.

      @RobertNES816  5 років тому +2

      You're absolutely right. But having two speakers playing in stereo in a small space as apposed to just one playing in a small space has a similar affect to listening to FM stereo on an old radio VS just FM. even though the speakers are close together you still get the added "open sound" of stereo vs having the L/R channels simply mixed together creating a narrow and congested listening experience.

    • @RobertNES816
      @RobertNES816  5 років тому

      It all depends on the music you listen to. For me with heavy metal and just about any of the 80's music I listen to it was apparent the Charge 3 was a better choice for me over the Charge 4.

    • @renosgarage7451
      @renosgarage7451 5 років тому

      I dont think you're hearing the difference between stereo and mono, I think you're hearing a difference in frequency response and believing it's the lack of stereo sound.
      The speakers on the charge 3 have almost no separation, the stereo effect is non existent.
      You may also be hearing beaming, the driver they uses rolls off pretty hard on the high end and it has a ton of EQ to make up for it, that works on-axis, but off axis the sound will suffer badly.

    Why I think they went with there design, first they disabled the microphone because they came out with there JBL link portable, they went with a mono design because the speaker itself isn’t big enough to produce a stereo sound effectively due to the size of the unit and you can only enjoy that sound if your six feet away having the speaker facing towards you, so having stereo on the speaker wouldn’t be needed, also with two slightly bigger stereo speakers would rack up the price where you would rather just pay for the extreme 2 for just 60 or 50 more bucks, why they went with the 3 cylinder type batteries in the charge is because they’re cheaper and safer, which thus explains the off-centered speaker. In summary the speaker will probably be on a table or shelf somewhere at a party so no stereo is needed to come out of on speaker since nobody will notice…
    And if you want stereo, JBL would be happy to sell you another JBL Charge 4. More money for them and true stereo for you.

      That's why I stuck with the charge 3. It's not the stereo effect per say. It's more the improved fidelity from have two drivers handling left and right channels instead of compressing it all into one driver. With the music I listen to it just didn't sound right to my ears. I actually never bothered to upgrade from the flip 4 either. I'll probably use these speakers until the no longer work.

      Smart, if you’re speaker isn’t broken why buy another one?
      That’s why I didn’t get the charge 4.
      But I did go for the charge 5, my charge 2 had seen better days…
      Plus the charge 5 has a tweeter, it tends to fill a room a little better and have more fidelity in the mids and highs. And I normally put my speaker in the back of my room so I don’t really mind the lack of stereo…

    sad is that JBL did that shit with the new FLIP 5 to switch from stereo to mono and also did replaced JBL connect + with party boost what makes older models like the charge 3 , flip 4 , charge 4 , extreme 2 and the boombox unable to connect each other and thats sucks .

    Robert thank you for your video, it sounds like you know your stuff. I have a JBL charge 4 that's 3 months old. I can't get it to do nothing, not charging. I tried different power source, new charge cord, still nothing (no lights). What do I do next, Port, board or battery? Also, what is your opinion, on the best blue tooth speaker for under 300 bucks?

    • @RobertNES816
      @RobertNES816  4 роки тому +1

      The battery could've taken a dump on you. Or check the charging port to as it might have broken. With any BT device make sure you use a good name brand charger as off brands can and will damage the device and battery (blew up my LG G3 with an off brand charger).
      As for BT speakers I purchased the Charge 3 again after returning this speaker. I'm happy with the Charge 3 so I can't offer any advice on newer speakers since I honestly haven't looked.

    Hi Robert. I just talked to JBL customer service and about mono sound and why they did this, told me that all their speakers are mono! And if you see more than 1 driver in some series, for example in ch3, one of them is woofer and another one is tweeter! They're not stereo. They also claimed that one full range driver sounds better than few seprated drivers. Do you agreel?!

    • @RobertNES816
      @RobertNES816  5 років тому +3

      Thats not true. I've done numerous tests on my Charge 3 and Flip 4. They're both in stereo and both drivers are full range drivers. So it wouldn't make sense to have one act as a tweeter and the other s woofer.

    • @RobertNES816
      @RobertNES816  5 років тому +1

      I think they may have been talking about their current line up. The clip 3, flip 5, charge 4 are all mono. Then with the larger speakers they have two mid/low range drivers and two tweeters. Those larger speakers may in fact play in mono aswell since that's the direction that JBL/Harmon seems to be going.

    3x18650 battery, at 2500mAh each. So they even cheaped out on that one.
    At least it's 18650, so you can pop in new, better cells when it dies (up to 3600mAh/cell, or a total of 10800mAh), unlike the earlier Charge units (I'm looking at you, Charge 2+, with those almost exploding "chocolate bar" cells...)

    Is that small mesh on the front an opening? My Charge 4 is leaking air. I tested it with several others and everyone behaves a bit differently.
    I‘d shut the leak with glue or something

    • @RobertNES816
      @RobertNES816  5 років тому

      Thats a vent to allow for changes in air temperature and driver movement. If that vent gets blocked you'd see the drivers and passive radiators get pushed out on hot days like with the early Flip 3 units.
