Those falcon kettles are cool, I think they are called tea cans. They have a history, they where used by railroad engineers on steam engines to keep their tea warm by placing them on a small warming shelf that was on the steam engine.
I've worked in the meat industry in the past.....You are 100% correct, 'a sharp knife is a safe knife'. It took me 26 years of living before I finally learned that you 'always keep your hands & fingers BEHIND the moving blade!!!' Another good video😎👍
Awesome collection Simon!! I have to say nearly every camping I have taken with my family there has been something carved, going back to my Dad who loved to do cork screws and other decorative carvings. I like doing spoons too, something about them , and I still have them all! I used to make toy knives for my kids when they were little, and make birch bark sheaths for them. we also made little birch bark canoes! What is so special is the two gouges you have from your Grandfather! I cherish all the woodworking tools I have from my Grandfather, maybe thats what inspired me to spend my life making that my trade. Thanks for keeping the volgs coming at a time when so many of us around the world are sheltering home, there good to see, and remind us of good times , and help us look towards the good times yet to come!

I use honey in coffee. Taste great and it's much easier to take honey in the woods than sugar. It also keeps a long time. Otherwise I just drink it black
I share your interest in carving but is it not intriguing how a handy little carving kit has a habit of growing into a selection of tools that would fill a small workshop! Thanks for another great video.
Check out Doug Linker, have been watching him for years and he got me into carving, started with his bushcraft vids years ago. A cheaper jack of all trades knife is the old timer carvin jack or the similar higher price better version is the flexcut whittlin jack.
These back garden videos Simon are great. Specially when you want to go over something in a little bit more detail. This could be a new segment for you😆😆
.........It has always been intriguing to me to watch a skilled carver produce useful items....But my attempts to duplicate that fine art while sitting on the porch with one of my many pocket knives always turned into a stick sharpening event.....none the less entertaining and relaxing.....You produce great tools with fine knives and I enjoy your efforts....ATB..from central Texas....Take care.....

No joke, an art to sharpening them hook knives. My mora 163 is a bear. I need to modify it and get rid of that razor point. Sliced my palm on the first spoon. Ordered cutproof gloves 2 minutes later. Have some waiting for my 7 yr old to grow into and he has a couple moras waiting on him to be ready to open. Made him a lap leather to cover the triangle of death and a few lap spoon vises. I like my beavercraft and flexcut as well. I am working on getting a Robin wood set and would love a Hans Karllson. I pocket the old timer carvin jack sometimes but it's a pretty heavy EDC knife.
Thanks for a look at your wood carving kit. Very late in life I did some spoon carving; did a bowl and a kuksa. Alas, I had dry wood and things were a struggle. Dust and chips all over my study.

I picked up a starter carving kit from Lee Valley years back, then picked up a Flexcut started kit and a Carving Jack combination knife. Used to do some carving during the summer especially at Scout Camp. Finding it harder to do now with arthritis in my hands, not as flexible and cramp sooner, but still enjoy it.

Cheers Luke, you really don’t need all of this gear - one knife (could even be your normal belt knife if it’s sharp enough) and a crook knife for the bowl. 👍
Nice kit there Simon. Don’t think I could get into carving as I tend to be a bit accident prone with sharp blades. One overnighter in the woods with a couple of mates I was trimming a stick to use as a fire poker when the blade slipped and took a sizeable slice out of the little finger. Knew it needed stitches and that there was going to be nerve damage so set off walking to the hospital (about 8km). After waiting for about 3 hours the doctor finally came in and asked what was wrong. Me, 6ft2in, dressed in olive combats, boots etc, stinking of campfire and a tad embarrassed holds up my left hand with a bandage on the little finger and I could just see the doc holding back the chuckles and I knew he was thinking ‘Ahh yeah, Johnny Rambo cuts his little finger and comes crying to the hospital!’ 😁

Simon, as always a most entertaining and enjoyable video. However, loved to see your enamel “teapot” as you called it. When I was 15, wow in the mid sixties, I helped out on a Yorkshire farm and these were called mashing cans. The tea was mashed at the farmhouse, milk added and it was my job to deliver to the farm workers at tea breaks. Don’t normally do nostalgia but woh nice to see. Thanks my friend regards to Zen
I have some of my grandfather’s tools, some dating back to the 1920’s, they are among my most treasured possessions. They just don’t make things to that standard any more, unless it’s extremely high end. I have small brass handled screwdrivers, originally for guns. Lovely little oil cans, and a large copper one that you squeeze the handle to dispense- can’t imagine anyone using copper nowadays! When I buy tools, I always look for old ones, I love the old ebony and brass mortise gauges. I managed to win some chisels on eBay the other week,, they are a joy to look at, never mind use. The wood is beautiful, the shape, the lustre, patina’d metal, brass fittings, why would you want to buy a cheap modern set for the same money?😁
Would you do a video on how you sharpen your knives Simon, specifically the Boar? I know there's loads of videos but I feel like you would do a good, simply broken down tutorial on how to do it without going overboard on the minute details. Thanks!

Awesome set and amazing timing too! I had my first set of carving knives through the post yesterday! In fact, I'm pretty sure it's the same cheap set you spoke about here! The knives look identical :D I'm going to start using them next week as I have a week off work :) I've started with the cheap set with the aim to get some better quality stuff as I get better and my enthusiasm grows.

If it helps, I found that a proper champagne cork fits snuggly into the curve of the crook knife. Keeps the sharp pointy bit safe. Recently watched your Wissey trip and you mentioned your Landy. Please tell me it's at least a Defender or earlier.

I had a 109 Safari back in the 80's but then kids arrived and never had one since. Still in the blood though. You're doing grand. Keep up the good work.
Nice carving set there! Carving wood is a very nice creative hobby! By the way, please let me put my opinion, on saws! Bahco Laplander, is a military,survival,hunting style saw,desinged to cut more stuff than wood (bones,plastic etc). IMO Bushcrafters should choose something like Opinel No 12 saw (stay away of their 18 model),. Campers should choose somthing like Corona saws and Professional carpenters,woodworkers etc, should choose Silky or similar Japanese saws. Are all these saws, that will cut wood? Yes they are, I just said my opinion, on what is more suitable, for each situation.

Hey, Simon....a "crook knife" in the U.S. is called a "bow knife"......It is the short slang name for a "bowl knife"!! A crook in our woods is a man who steals...a thief! lol Question...are those tea bags reusable? ie...you can put your fresh ground in it..steep ..then empty, wash and be ready for another cup...also...nice spoons..good talent...great vid...as usual..."..may you have a sure foot and a warm fire in all your trails...

I’m certainly no skilled carver, that’s for sure, but like you, I enjoy cutting away at a piece of wood and hopefully making something useful. 👍😁

Neat coffee pot and coffee bags. Wipe the outside of your pot with dish soap it makes it easier to wash of the black sootie char off. Thanks

Would you do a video on how you sharpen your knives Simon, specifically the Boar? I know there's loads of videos but I feel like you would do a good, simply broken down tutorial on how to do it without going overboard on the minute details. Thanks!

Hi there Simon it's great to see you mate 👍🏾 and you may not be a woodcarver but you work with wood nonetheless as a carpenter and a joiner that definitely gives you a one up over most of us LOL you have a working man's hands your fingers are nmble and trained

Awesome set and amazing timing too! I had my first set of carving knives through the post yesterday! In fact, I'm pretty sure it's the same cheap set you spoke about here! The knives look identical :D I'm going to start using them next week as I have a week off work :) I've started with the cheap set with the aim to get some better quality stuff as I get better and my enthusiasm grows.

If it helps, I found that a proper champagne cork fits snuggly into the curve of the crook knife. Keeps the sharp pointy bit safe. Recently watched your Wissey trip and you mentioned your Landy. Please tell me it's at least a Defender or earlier.

Nice carving set there! Carving wood is a very nice creative hobby! By the way, please let me put my opinion, on saws! Bahco Laplander, is a military,survival,hunting style saw,desinged to cut more stuff than wood (bones,plastic etc). IMO Bushcrafters should choose something like Opinel No 12 saw (stay away of their 18 model),. Campers should choose somthing like Corona saws and Professional carpenters,woodworkers etc, should choose Silky or similar Japanese saws. Are all these saws, that will cut wood? Yes they are, I just said my opinion, on what is more suitable, for each situation.

Awesome carving kit. I tried once carving with a bend knife but it did not work at all.
Perhaps my bend knife was cheap junk and i need to spend a litlebit more money.

Hey, Simon....a "crook knife" in the U.S. is called a "bow knife"......It is the short slang name for a "bowl knife"!! A crook in our woods is a man who steals...a thief! lol Question...are those tea bags reusable? ie...you can put your fresh ground in it..steep ..then empty, wash and be ready for another cup...also...nice spoons..good talent...great vid...as usual..."..may you have a sure foot and a warm fire in all your trails...
Interesting about the crook knife terminology, cheers. These particular coffee bags are single use, but I do have some muslin reusable tea bags that I use. 👍
