Test F1 Williams FW15C CVT at Pembrey in Wales

- In 1993 Williams ruled the Formula 1 with a high tech car the FW15C. Williams made use of e.g. active suspension controlled by computer setting it up perfectly for every corner. Williams was a leap ahead of the competition and was also making progress on other areas such as the transmission. Together with Van Doorne’s Transmissie Williams was working on the development of Continously Variable Transmission. The push belt CVT offered the advantage of allowing the engine at peak engine capacity. This leaded to a special sound as there was no engine rev. drop during cornering. Also it was a new experience for the driver. At that time David Coulthard was the driver. The main advantage of the CVT was that it was faster than the auto shift transmission. Unfortunately the new technology was banned before it could be raced in Formula 1, because it was to good and would result even more seconds of Williams racing ahead of competition. However CVT was banned in Formula 1 it proofed CVT Pushbelt technology is suitable for the higher torques. Next the 30 mm belt was developed resulting into the production of the 30/12 belt suitable for torque levels up to 350 Nm.
The constant engine tone moving around the track sounds like listening to a ww2 plane in the sky
PTSD warning for veterans
Thank you so so much for sharing this for all to see.
If anyone is interested, the car is on show in the DAF Museum, Eindhoven.
I’d rather listen to this engine than a current F1 hybrid, but wow that’s weird!
Ahh, the days when F1 was more about technology than aero, and Williams were THE BEST.
Most of the technology was used to improve aero, wdym?
Bommer scum
I remember reading that Renault had quite serious reservations about this because the engine technology was not there to sustain a constant high rpm output. The engine needed those periods of lower rpm to survive. So over one lap, lovely.
I bet the drivers relierd on the engine noise too as that's what they'd had all their careers to then.
Well thats the case with any race engine. You'd need so many balance shafts coming into play at different constant RPM operation intensities.
Most engines will shake themselves to bits at constant RPM for minutes at a time
Never thought I’d see David Coulthard driving a Dodge Caravan!
What a stupid donkey
CVT for the win! Love my honda ZRV 1.5 turbo cvt
Amazing piece of F1 history. Thanks!
It's basically what you find in every scooter. But much more advanced.
it still sounded better than the new hybrids
New?
Muito melhor. O som e hoje é uma porcaria. 🇧🇷
Boomer
Cvt is the gearbox, the motor was the same!! 😅
It really surprises me how it doesnt sound that awful. Lucky its a v10.
Thank you so much this, we only had the short version of the cvt wich showed almost nothing
Pembrey feels fast with 200hp. I can't imagine what it's like in a F1 car! 😅
those F1s were amazing cars
It sounds like some sort of a jetfighter, no gears, no shifting! Only one gradually increasing whine!
I had to replay from 0:47 several times to convince myself the guy coming into shot at the back of the car _wasn't_ Jeremy Clarkson!
David Coulthard: The greatest driver at the right place but the wrong time.
Van Doorne , Doorne Automobiel Fabriek / Doorne Automobil Factory ( DAF ) , Van Doorne Transmissie (VDT) nowadays called BOSCH Transmission Technology
So i'm now finding out that Coulthard's first Williams test was actually in '93 and not '94?!
Yes he was their test driver in 1993
I think the best looking F1 ever and those sounds! Now I can't watch F1 for years, no matter who wins
O time de Grove ia esmagar a concorrência!!
Well it didn't really make a difference in that respect
Um alvirrubro
Any one notice the fully active suspension, that also got banned
Awesome video
Thank you for sharing
Does someone recognize the cad software seen at 2:10 ? I guessed Cimatron IT but it is too much old.
Imagine a whole grid of these CVT boxes? Would be so egregiously painful. 20+ f1 cars at constant high RPM no matter their situation.... glad it never happened
Why does its constant drone unsettle me slightly?
I can understand why Max Mosley banned CVT before it was raced. It really sounded horrible and "not natural", even with the beautyfull sound of a V10.
It sounds completely fine. Way better than today's f1.
I guarantee you this,it’s sound, good or bad had nothing to do with it being banned.
It would be interesting how much faster this would have been . Why is this not a thing in normal cars? It would ne easy to spare fuel, to raise reliability.
I believe they tested the system at Silverstone and it proved to be around 3 seconds faster there. The system allows the engine to run at the optimum speed nearly all the time so full power would be available to the driver throughout. And it doesn’t cut drive completely for shifting gears all the time.
@@KlaasRijnks As far as I know that is more myth than truth. I read a David Coulthard interview where he stated they ran fast laps on a shortened Silverstone circuit and he thought the gain would be about half a second or more on a lap in comparison to their regular car. Sounds sensible to me since they already had paddle shift back then.
@@rofufoja I think I read the supposed three second advantage years ago, I certainly can’t remember where I read it or who said it. But if Coulthard, the driver, thinks it’s about half a second, then that’s probably a far better estimate. Still, it appears it would be quicker and it’s a bit of shame it got banned immediately.
About the paddle-shift boxes: do you have any info on the shift times back then? They weren’t as sophisticated as gearboxes now and didn’t shift as seamless as they do today.
What do you mean this is not a thing in normal cars? CVT gearboxes are incredibly common in road cars, and often derided by purist.
I've driven CVT cars for 20 years now, ranging from Honda to Proton and now Renault.
@@KlaasRijnks Shift timers on the first paddle shift boxes in F1 were around 100-120ms. So still very fast. I believe very quickly they were at about 80 and it went down from there. They are in single figures now.
The fking sound.
lost media found
Good find!
it's like formula e with real engine
Its actually CVT and not CTV
A very young DC
A very clever invention and would probably have been a huge advantage for about 3 months until everyone else developed their own version! Was probably the correct decision to ban it if only to protect everyone's hearing from the incessant whining. Those beautiful v10s were at their best smashing through the gears with the accompanying crescendo! I do miss the 90s though with all the bad hair, terrible fashion and primitive computers. It was a much simpler time 🤣 DC was just as easy on the eye back then as he is now which is utterly disheartening cos now my missus has another celebrity crush. Couldn't get her to watch f1 before but now she knows about him she can't wait for the new seasons highlights on TV 🙄
It was hardly an invention. F3 races were won with a CVT in the 70's already, but your definetely right about V10s.
This is how the 2026 F1 cars will sound like, as they'll have to constantly run at full power to charge the batteries.
At least this one had a V10 in the back. If this one does not sound right, i cant imagine how shit the cars will sound in 2026.
Why did they feel the need to ban it ?
MEU SONHO DE FORMULA 1
Interesting...👍🏻
CVT as used on a DAF 33.. cool 🤔
Make V10 Great Again.
Imagine the V10 era without downshifts ...terrible
DC......the man with a square jaw.
Love the Renault v10. But without gears it sounds awful.
It really doesn't sound that bad..We hear way way worse these days
CVT not CTV
Why is this kind of CVT transmission not used in (light) diesel trucks?
Because they are fragile garbage in road driven cars, Nissan has been proving it since around 2006. Heavy trucks would be worse. They are OK in light vehicles, such as ATV / SXS, and snowmobiles.
What about that poor engine constantly revving so high ? I guess that engine ovestress was likely to affect reliability.
Imagine v12 cvt
Puberty Dave....
How did it managed to survive the abuse?
Christ, coulthard looks about 15 yr old 😮😳🤣🤣
Cvt, the future of f1! 😅 So wrong!!!
A truly awful sound, happily confined to F1 testing history, which is where it belongs.
As long as you mean the constant engine rpm.
I’d say that’s just strange rather than awful. The V10s sounded fantastic!
@@tonylockhart1963 absolutely the constant drone, not the engine per se. I would never defile the beautiful V10!
Sounds the same as normal, just without the melody.
It's a Scottish accent, it's not that bad
Cool tech but awful to drive and spectate.
