“The principal task of a conductor is not to put himself in evidence but to disappear behind his functions as much as possible. We are pilots, not servants.” -- Franz Liszt
Stephen is a wonderful player I wonder if he would play a contemporary piece such as Kyle Landry's version of first steps though I would give my life's savings for a master piano player to play it
In general, I love Hough's playing - I think this was a bad day at the office for him, by his super-high standards. Numerous mistakes in all three pieces and not completely convincing musically either. He is still brilliant of course, kind of hostage to the ridiculously high standards he set for himself.
Playing live and recording can be very different. I have found that most pianists sacrifice the fire and chance in exchange for a more sanitized or "safe" interpretation, as is the case here I think. I find Mr. Hough's earlier recordings to be far more convincing than his "live" renditions.
I love the preformance, I have Stephen Hough's dream Album with his signicture on it.
What a wonderful performance, brilliant. Bravo!!!
Stephen hough!!!!! Wonderful and fantastic!!!!!♡

Premiere Performances of Hong Kong Thanks! He didn’t play the first Valse Oubliée, only the second, btw.
Wonderful! Thanks for posting!
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have always regretted not seeing him perform this program...and now I regret it even more.
Wow! Wow! Wow! Such absolute talent. Bravo!

Great!
valses oubliees - written during that time when the master was on about 4 bottles of Cognac a day
Such an amazing musician.
But that ugly corporate sponsorship backdrop display is a bloody disgrace.

Broman, he is a classical pianist

What is the full programme of the recital?
Here's more details :) bit.ly/2IhbrUc
Debussy knew Waltz no. 1..
I don’t think he trills correctly in the Valse Oubliee 2; too fast , rhythmically inaccurate; Michele Campanella has the right idea
From S.H. little disappointing. Berman's recording of the Etudes still difficult to match.

Not the best of interpretations, however I like Stephen
