  • Here's a look inside my art studio acolorfuljourn... Over on the blog, I've got links to the cabinets, the j hooks, etc.
    I’m Carolyn Dube - a mixed media art adventurer who takes the intimidation out of supplies so that you can find freedom through creativity. Play with every color of the rainbow, avoid rules whenever possible, and let the little kid inside of you free through art.

    You can find me designing stencils for StencilGirl Products, teaching in person and online workshops and sharing the message of O.O.P.S. here on UA-cam and on the blog, aColorfulJourney.com
    What does O.O.P.S. stand for? It stands for Outstanding Opportunities Presenting Suddenly.
    Those “failures” and “mistakes” that we so harshly criticized ourselves about actually became true gifts as soon as you start saying O.O.P.S. Try saying Oops in an angry tone. It makes it even more silly!
    I just can’t take myself seriously when I say Oops which is just what I needed to play. I began to play, to have fun, and to embrace all of my “mistakes”.

    I love how much space you have ~ three whole big tables!!!
    But I have to say, my favorite thing is that your husband made you a permanent rainbow. That is just so sweet.

    I love your studio and your practical attitude. I hate cleaning my sink up too. The best solution I have found, after it's gotten particularly crusty, I stopper it and run it full of hot water, then drop in a dishwasher cube and let it set over night. After I drain out the water, it wipes out easily in 3 min or less.

    I love your creative space. I like to create in many different forms and have been trying to reorganize a large number of different media. I think my favorite thing, is the glass on your work station. Very cool. I am going to do this. I might use plexi-glass though, as I'm afraid I might break it. Absolutely awesome. thanks for sharing.

    LOL You know what I'm the same way exactly... If I can't see a thing I never check on them, even for food I bought, if it's hidden on the other side of the desk behind some stuff I never knew it's there until I went out and saw "oh I bought this"

    I just found your video, thanks for sharing your studio space! You articulated my own process of starting and stopping, leaving projects out while looking for inspiration and needing to see what I have to work with. I would love to know where you found the flat files, I’ve been looking for some but the price is too high for the ones I’ve seen. I have a few of the ikea ones, which I love, but the ones for larger paper would be great. Thanks again for your videos.

  • @Windkisssed

    How incredibly inspiring!!! I am just like you “Out of sight, out of mind”!! Unfortunately I have a teensie corner of a room “studio” and yes, most things are out of sight! That is why my creativity is on a hiatus.
    I’m in the (slow) process of turning a 20’ toy-hauler trailer into a mobile art studio! I want to make it as much like your space - all about creating - as I can! As it is, I have a 7 1/2 foot table along one wall! Great space + I can breathe in there!
    What a PERFECT location, mother-in-law quarters!! It gives you an area for every step of creating!! Love the couch! I always need to stop & ponder. I love the underside of the shelving! The colors throughout definitely shout Carolyn! And the labeling....young artists won’t understand!!! Lol!
    Thanks so much for a peek into your beautiful work-space!!

    Oh, one question. How do you like storage/cabinets with all of the drawers? I think they’re from Best Craft Organizer. I was thinking about getting some. Thanks!

    • @CarolynDube
      @CarolynDube  5 років тому

      I like them a lot- haven't found a better way to cram so much stuff in a small space and actually be able to find it! Totally customizable so if you want the deeper drawers or the skinny ones- and they've held up well. The only drawback to me is that the drawers that are in direct sunlight have yellowed some over the last 10+ years- and I can live with that!

  • @donna6516

    This video needs to come with a warning: "Watching this video may turn you green with envy and cause your keyboard and screen to be covered in drool!" My play space, aka the "art cave" is also in the basement but it's not a finished basement with only a tiny basement window to see the outside (no rainbows) and shelving is the wire stuff from Home Depot fastened to the studs. Teal colored rolling carts like yours, drawers assembled from ones on sale at Michael's and plastic drawers dragged home when I retired from my second grade teaching job. A couple of bookcases that my DH made and mountains of stuff. I've been able to spend minimal time there this past year due to chemo but now that I'm on vacation from that, I'm doing a massive tidy up and organization. My P-Touch labeler has nearly gone into meltdown. Between chemo brain and old age I can't find a thing if it doesn't have a label in 36 point type! LOVE your space!

    • @CarolynDube
      @CarolynDube  5 років тому

      Glad you're back in your play space on that vacation Donna! I've got a P-Touch too- so much fun labeling stuff so it can be found again! There are so many times I wish it had an even bigger font- my eyes are aging- dang bifocals- but at least I've avoided trifocals so far.

    • @donna6516
      @donna6516 5 років тому

      Had cataract surgery so I could ditch the reading glasses but now my 2 eyes aren't playing well together -- they don't "sync" up when trying to focus so if I start a line on the left and another on the right, chances are they won't meet in the middle. Glad I'm not a bridge builder.....

  • @coveredinpaint7318
    @coveredinpaint7318 5 років тому +1

    Oh wow! I could spend hours sitting in your studio, just soaking everything up! So much to see and explore, so much gorgeous colour. It's so inspiring. I wish I had space like that, I have to share my area with any guests who might stay, as it's in our small guest room, so I need to keep it tidy.
    I love the rug on the floor. Is it one you bought, or made?
    Thank you so much for sharing.
    Julia, from the UK. x

    • @CarolynDube
      @CarolynDube  5 років тому +2

      I used to have to share the space with guests but now that the kids are gone, their rooms are guest rooms and I got to take over the entire space. The rugs are all purchased - don't have the patience yet for weaving that much

    • @coveredinpaint7318
      @coveredinpaint7318 5 років тому +1

      Yes, once my kids left, hubby had one room for his retro computer game collection, and the smaller room became our guest room! Our house is quite small. UK houses don't have basements very often.
