The first-ever NASCAR race held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the first race not named the Indianapolis 500 to be run at the speedway since the Harvest Classic in 1916 occurred on Saturday, August 6th, 1994.
With a NASCAR record 85 cars attempting to qualify for the 43 car field, one of the largest crowds to attend a NASCAR race and a record purse of $3.2 million dollars, the race drew many one-off appearances, most notably from past Indianapolis 500 winners A.J. Foyt (who had come out of retirement to participate in the race) and 1985 winner Danny Sullivan, who made his only NASCAR start after failing to qualify for the Rockingham and Atlanta races earlier in the season.
The race featured the famous collision between the Bodine brothers, as Brett Bodine spun his brother Geoff out of the lead on Lap 101, leading to a feud between the brothers that would last for two years after the incident.
The finish of the inaugural Brickyard 400 ended with a great battle between Ernie Irvan and Jeff Gordon, who was in his second year in the Hendrick 24 after coming from the sprint car and midget scene in Indiana, winning the 1990 USAC Midget and 1991 USAC Silver Crown championships before making the transitions to stock cars in 1992.
After a back-and-forth battle that went on for nearly 15 laps, Gordon passed Irvan with five to go after Irvan ran over debris, causing his right front tire to go down and Irvan finishing 17th one lap down after having to make a pit stop to change the tire.
Jeff Gordon would win the inaugural running of the Brickyard 400, his second NASCAR victory after winning the Coca-Cola 600 earlier that season at Charlotte.
The win was a popular win for Gordon, as he had grown up in nearby Pittsboro and had raced sprint cars and midgets at local Indiana dirt tracks in his early career before making the jump to NASCAR.

ABC did a good job bringing in their Indy crew-Paul Page as host, the Delta Force Intro, the Indy pit reporters, etc. It was a good way to bring in Indy fans who were checking this race out.

Rest In Peace Bob and Benny. This day and Daytona 1998 are the best in NASCAR history.

This is the only version that exists without the audio clipping that is shown in almost every highlight reel. Insane.

That’s gotta be one of the worst bonehead moments in NASCAR. Brett spinning his brother out. Geoff would have won the race.
This was the start of the Jeff Gordon that would come to dominate for years to come. A heck of a finish.

The fact that they had The theme song for Chuck Norris The Delta Force playing at the beginning makes this even more awesome.

My Father went to this race. The story he told me was the race was delayed by something, and they were about to leave, and then they heard them calling the drivers back to their cars, and they hurried back.

From what I remember of the story 1:17:00 was the source of the family problems between Brett and Geoff that Geoff mentioned in his interview. If I recall correctly Geoff was having an emotional affair with Tanya that ended up leading to his divorce. Considering that his wife was normally a pit road fixture and she'd not been at several races that summer, it at least makes the story I remember plausible.
