Fantastic stuff Mark. Neil is a super tasteful player - great sense of melody and the technical ability to really take it up a notch too - but only when required. Thanks again for a super lesson.
Thank you! I'm glad you enjoyed it. I'm guessing this one won't get many views, as Neil isn't anywhere near as appreciated as he should be ... and Pat Benatar's popularity isn't what it was in 1981! But yeah, one of the best. And a great balance between really great guitar work and still staying "pop". I don't know too many players who did it anywhere nearly as good as he did.
@@MarkZabel Totally agree. Trying to think of some other ones from that era. REO Speedwagon - Gary Richrath's "Take it on the Run" solo maybe. Jeff Carlisi from 38 Special had a few really nice ones.
You're welcome. I totally agree about Neil. One of the best players of that time and maybe the best of the "new wave guys". He's under appreciated for sure. Not for nothing, but look at the numbers on this video - nowhere near some other ones.
That was awesome Mark👍. Always thought this song and solo were badazz and still do. I still stand by my belief that the 80's was the best decade of music because of how many great songs it had.😎
Thanks Cap! Yeah, the opening and bridge of the song are great. Pat had an absolutely fantastic drummer too and he really shines on this song as well. The 80s were great for sure!
Thank you!! This was a toughie for sure. This one, Hit Me, Jessie's Girl, and more. Precious Time also has a great solo: ua-cam.com/video/N-LaM-yS28A/v-deo.html
Very much agree, can't wait to tackle this one. It annoyed me so much in the video that they shot a lot of the solo but cut away at the fast part where he's kind of playing in 3rds, so to have an accurate tab is a real gift. Thank you!!!
Rock on! Take your time, take it slowly. That's what I tell myself when I have trouble playing something. It usually works, but it *does* take time. Thanks for watching and for the kind comment!
Thanks for the video and the great playing. I’ve loved this solo ever since I first saw the “live” video on MTV as a kid in the early 80’s. Spider is a fantastic guitarist. I’ve been able to figure out what he plays in the solo, except for that arpeggiated sequence just before the pick-tapping part - I could not determine what’s going on no matter how much I slowed things down...This lesson was the key - Thanks.
So happy I could help. Yes, I had exactly the same reaction ... crazy drummer, Pat Benatar's clothes (hey, I was a teenager) and this killer guitar solo! I think this is one of the best of the 1980s. Very tasty, technically tough. Plus, he played it on that BC Rich too. So cool!
@@MarkZabel At that time my 12-year old friends and I were into Rush, Yes and Genesis, and peer pressure prohibited any one of us from liking any music besides those bands or harder rock bands like Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, etc. Limited exceptions were made for a select few bands whose technical proficiency offset the femininity of their sound (The Police, for example, were grandfathered in under that proviso). But getting caught willingly listening to, say, Brass in Pocket by the Pretenders meant instant excommunication from the group. So I would sooner jump off the GW Bridge than admit to anyone that I thought the guitar solo to a Pat Benatar song was cool.
Glad I saw this comment. I've been playing that part on the the B and G strings forever and always thought it sounded off but never put 2 and 2 together - Thanks.
Awesome tutorial !!!!!! Thank you for doing this one !!! Easy to follow along with how you break the song down and explain it. Do you have a tutorial for the rest of the song available ? There is another run in the song he does that I am having trouble figuring out.

Another awesome lesson. From song selection/learning/breakdown/editing/posting - How much time was devoted to create this free lesson? As with all of them, it is extremely appreciated. It may be time to send some $$$ your way. Thanks!
Thanks Phil! It's always very much appreciated. This one ... have to admit ... took a while. It's tough from a technical and "feel" perspective. Plus, figuring out the notes (to the extent that I got them) was tougher than usual. Neil Giraldo was/is an amazing player who doesn't get the sort of credit that other extremely good musicians get. Well, he got plenty of money and married Pat Benatar, so it worked out okay for him anyway!
I have commented before. I like what you do, don't want to troll ya... but if only you would work on your bends. They are always a tiny bit flat! Maybe try using 9s. That may fix the problem. I have used 10s all my life and finally tried 9s. HUGE HUGE difference in tone and bends - particularly 1string and 7th position and lower 1 and 1-1/2 step bends. NOt 23 years old anymore! Also, Neil's playing has an attitude. The vibratos are aggressive, precise, the bends are with attitude, precise and exquisite, raw but in the pocket timing. These small nuances make a world of difference. Difficult to master ( if ever), difficult to communicate and instruct. Cheers mate!
Someone that finally explained the triad climb. Thanks very much! 🎸
Rock on!
One of the best instructional videos for learning a solo in a song that I’ve ever seen. Thank you.❤
Wow, thank you!

Thank you.
Looking forward to the next lesson.

Such an underrated solo!
No doubt! Hey, don't I owe you an Allman Brothers song? Soulshine maybe? I forgot to put it on the list. Sorry about that.
@@MarkZabel lol! It was Whitesnake, Keep On Giving Me Love, actually! I know you'll get to it! Great job, as always!
Thank you for that tutorial. What a great guitar solo. There isn't a ton published from their catalog. Feel free to keep it coming.
Thanks, will do!
Thanks. Brought back memories. This song was on the first compilation I ever bought : KTEL's greatest hits.
I remember those KTEL compilation albums. Great stuff!

What brand and model of pick is that you are using?
Looks like one of those "Acrylux" picks. I used them for a while. Not sure of the brand. Maybe D'addario.
@@MarkZabel Thanks!
The ascending triads should be palm muted....
