  • It was time for me to start making new miniatures and that meant all new base meshes.
What better time to add a bit of variation into the mix!

This is a really insightful video. I had the same issues when I started out making miniatures. I started out doing idealized proportioned characters, the 8 heads tall heroic looking type, they looked really cool in the sculpting software I used but when I printed them out, the limbs looked kinda thin. a few of my friends that did miniature sculpting told me to do a more dwarfish stylized proportioned character with bigger heads and thicker limbs as you've mentioned in the vid so I had to reproportion the miniatures I made. now I use a 6 1/2 heads tall proportioned base for my human characters. they kinda look like fable characters or so I've been told but they turned out really well. you made the right call with making base meshes for your characters I like your strategy of making base body types for them. I also do this as well and even take it a step further and make base meshes for various common equipment like shirts, pants, long coats. capes, bits of armor and such even bases for weapons as well to speed up the workflow. I predominantly do my sketchwork in 3d so having alot bases for prototyping helps to block things out faster :) keep up the good work man Im really enjoying your content and im excited to see how your game progresses.

      Thank you so much!
I'm still trying to work out exactly how much I have to scale things, but I think that just needs practice.
I also want to build up a library of common equipment bits to use but I think it will have to wait until I have more of a standard style set in place.

3:27 It was the Psilocybin Chronicles for a few seconds there. lol It's still a little daunting as I'm a total X-oomer, but I'm loving the results here. I guess there wouldn't be the heavier type of body (Wal-mart wheelchair type) due to the setting of the world.

      Hahaha
It's definitely not necessary to sculpt your own. Plenty of STLs out there. I'm just a bit over ambitious.
I was thinking about adding a heavy set body type as well but I think it will have to come later. 8 would have been a bit much

It's time consuming, but I think it will pay off in the future. Especially if you have mostly the same type of mini.

Great video, and your progress has inspired me to try making my own miniatures too! Do you have a copy of the blend file so that I could start with these basemeshes?

I'm glad to hear it! I definitely recommend trying for yourself regardless, but have been considering putting them up somewhere.

Wow. This is cool. What program are you using? Can this be all done on a regular desktop?

      Thank you!
I'm just using Blender, which is a free 3D modeling program.
You don't need a beefy PC to run it but the more detailed your model gets the more intensive it is.
You should give it a try!
