    I can already tell Jon will do quality work with this build. It's nice to see someone taking pride in doing it right and building a nice vehicle. I still like the offroad beater type rigs, but there's something about a clean build that is simply refreshing.

    Great video, here in the european market most of our Jeep are diesel powered, KJs and JKs got a 2.8 CRD engine made by VM motori, very torquey engines, good amount of power and reliability too.
    You may consider them for a diesel swap, they are ready to match Jeep transmission with no adapters then you can find them to the junkyard for cheap with all the wiring harness and its own ECM.
    As a Jeep anthusiast , I'll be happy to help you buy and ship you engine and parts for you, just let me know.
    Keep doing what you're doing guys, your videos are great.

    • @DRTJon
      @DRTJon 5 років тому

      In European markets that may be a great option. Here in the US we only got them in the KJ with an automatic transmission and production numbers were quite limited. I have never seen one in a salvage yard. Some years back I came across an early body style XJ with the 2.5 VM Motori but the price (had front end damage and they wanted $2500) and parts cost/availability scared me away.

    • @DRTJon
      @DRTJon 5 років тому

      That will be sick! WJ might be a good candidate for one of the newer TDIs too, but any way you go, TD Conversions has you covered with the adapter it's a beautiful piece. Personally I am a manual guy all the way so an AX15 or NSG370 would be my only choices, but I'd understand wanting to keep the Grand living up to it's name so AW4 would probably be a good choice for that build as well.

    I think this is a fantastic idea. In Europe we have lots of small diesels in big vans. I've driven a 2.0 van with an all up weight of over 3 tones. Still had no problem at all on steep hills. The only time you will miss the 4.0 is when overtaking with oncoming traffic. I suspect it could use half the fuel and may have better touque low down.

    • @DRTJon
      @DRTJon 5 років тому +1

      The TDI has so much tuning potential though! The Jetta was quite snappy and I don't expect the XJ will be much of a slouch in comparison. I'm starting out stage 3 tuned, larger injectors, larger intercooler and 2.5" free flowing exhaust but I definitely plan to upgrade turbo and there's plenty of room for a compound setup in here if needed. Injection pump on mine is the 11mm from it being an automatic so I won't be running out of fuel unless I get to crazy high numbers. Best yet there's tons of strong clutch options for the AX15 so holding 200+ HP won't be a concern. At that point I'll be looking at a new rear for sure though!

    Holy hell that TD adapter package is outrageously expensive for what you get. I understand how supply and demand works and that price should not even be feasible to anyone. Plus who would spend $5k total to put a TDI in when you can get a 4.0 with warranty for half that. Dude said a 4.0 is a Meh engine....meh my ass, the 4.0 is known as one of, if not the best, jeep engine ever made and possibly top 25 engines of all time. They are hard to kill and make plenty of power for XJs and you can easily get another 50-100hp with just bolt ons and a cam or have a Mustang killer if you stroke it. The 4.0 is regularly utilized in Baja style desert racing, and without a doubt the only engine being used in the JEEPSPEED racing series

    Nice to meet you John. I'll be watching you for sure as this is looking rather sweet. Nate actually brought that tdi thought up with his TJ and since then I've been contemplating how to do mine, even tho I already have a diesel in my xj...but not the good VW TDI but the "weird" VM 2.5l tdi. Anyway, just before christmas I got my hands on a bmw m57d30tue2 with factory modified ecu and some 220hp for a good buck so I thought why not give that a try. Fuel eco is still very good, sitting at about 23mpg. So far I'm in the stage of testing it and getting some bits and pieces together but hoping to start dropping it in during summer. I think it might be quite interesting if I do it right. Anyways, cheers to you!

    • @DRTJon
      @DRTJon 5 років тому +1

      Nick no mods to the oil pan. Though you need a lift to clear it. I’ll talk a lot more about this in future episodes. I decided to run a steel pan and I’ll also talk about that. The oil pickup tube actually is S shaped and curves towards the back of the engine. I will consider building a deeper sump and longer pickup but for now the stock setup doesn’t scare me at all.

      @bleepinjeep  5 років тому

      Jon should be set up to answer these questions soon!

    • @DRTJon
      @DRTJon 5 років тому +1

      As with any build, the answer to this question relies on 3 variables: transmission choice, tire size, and powerband of the engine/where in the RPM range is it most efficient. The ALH is most efficient around 2200-2600 RPM. In my Jetta with the automatic I was turning around 2500 RPM at 70. I’d like that number to be a little lower in the XJ, but not a lot, so that it isn’t lugging hard to keep such an anti-aerodynamic vehicle cutting through the wind. The 45 lb flywheel should help a little here as well. Keep in mind that for a direct injection engine these are still quite happy to whizz along at 3000+ RPM all day, but that’s not where they’ll be the most efficient. Of course until put into practice, much of this is theory, but that’s the gist of it 😎

    Had a mercedes om617 in a jeep, was perfect for crawling but sucked as a daily. For the cost of a tdi swap I decided to go with a built 4bt, so thats where im headed :D. I do look forward to seeing your swap!

      What's the 4BT in? I am also building a Grand Wagoneer with a 4BD1T Isuzu 3.9L, 1 tons and 37s but that project hit the back burner when I got the urge to do this TDI XJ. I always felt the 4BT and similar were a little heavy for the un XJ personally but I've seen plenty of builds with them lately and they're definitely awesome.

    Great job nice build ! What about R2.8 crate Cummins? Little more money but its plug and play.

      Eli Sancere what makes it plug and play? It’s a LOT more money! Still need an adapter to put an AX15 behind that too ya know

    I have a 2 door 98 with a factory 2,5 L - 115 HP engine, 5 speed stick shift, AC.
    I love the car for everyday driving. Pulls my horse trailer with two heavy mares through sand, the dirt and up the mountains and my Seadoo to the beach. Even rescued a Range Rover out of the mud. Runs an easy 160 km on the highway. Now I have 200.000 km. No mayor issues and still going strong.

    Just found this, want to convert my 99 XJ with the donor from my wife old 06 TDI. Should I have the TDI rebuilt first? It has 250K on it. Also, I got so excited I didn't wait till the part about the trans can I use my AW4 or do I need a different trans?

    is there a reason you didnt look into the coty built kits for the xj? im leaning that way because its so simple. You might check them out. You can purchase a control module that goes from the vw to the xj cluster. Plug and play. Everything works

    • @DRTJon
      @DRTJon 5 років тому +1

      I did look at them. Their kit costs almost as much as I have spent on this entire build so far, they only work with the PD engines and I already had the ALH, and I called and emailed them when in the planning stages and did not get any response. TBH I kinda assumed they were out of business

    This is all very interesting and I have contemplated a diesel change in my '01 TJ with 4.0 that now has the dreaded 4.0 deep ticking. But my heart yearns for nothing else but a Detroit Diesel 2-stroke. They are out there and I have heard them on you tube screaming thru mud bogs and I want one. American iron all the way thru....Detroit Diesel for me.

    • @DRTJon

      It would be awesome to have an old heavy duty truck with a Detroit for tooling around, but they are insanely heavy and very low power for their size and weight. I'd put one in something borderline rat rod for sure, but as a daily I can't imagine you could make something anywhere near practical.

    And it still runs. That is why I love the 4.0. You just can't kill it.

      elsydeon666 I killed it tho. Revved it to 2500 RPM with that knock and made it a window block

    The passat tdi engine would of been great i had one of them aswell if i knew id of put that in my xj, my uncle had a passat aswell n his had 160bhp standard mine was 140 standard

    • @DRTJon
      @DRTJon 5 років тому +1

      The Passat engines are great, not as easy to adapt all the accessories and such but definitely more base power available. In the next few years I'd love to take a CR 2.0 TDI and put it in a JKU as a family vehicle for us
