Neither for tire slashing nor assassination. The former would be silly and the latter would be a death wish. It's for cutting yourself free if you are captured and your hands bound with rope. The penny was chosen in the hope it wouldn't be instantly confiscated during the initial frisking, thus hopefully enabling the captive to fish out the coin and cut himself free if left unsupervised long enough (in a locked room overnight, for example, or in the back of a truck). I have seen OSS belt buckles, eyeglass frames, etc. that are designed with the same idea in mind.
I'm glad you've learnt something from the video, there quite an unknown subject 😀. You're right everyday is a learning day! Thanks for the sub, plenty of cool bits for the channel to come! 👍 Enjoy!
@tomrowe5826 never known the p38 referred to as the "John wayne" before 👍! The coin is a direct copy of the SOE coins. I'll post a video of the SOE coins for comparison.
Interesting because I have a vintage brass Saint Christopher medallion or watch fob by a company called Hickok that is made exactly like that. If you google "Hickok Saint Christopher watch fob" (or medallion) you'll see many examples of these in brass, silver and even gold. I 'think' these Hickok fobs are pre-war so they may have got the idea from this American company. Mine is on my key chain and I've found it useful many times. I believe the intent with the Hickok blades were simply to cut cigars.
I don't know about the assassination aspect (for a slashing blade it's just not long enough and it looks like it has no real stabbing capabilities in special through clothing). but as a hidden pocket knife they might not notice while you have been captured it could a very helpful tool.
Not long enough for a slashing blade? I’m not sure I would like THAT whipped across my throat/neck. How long is a Stanley blade? Admittedly this penny weapon is not so efficient, but in the right hands and with technique. Pretty effective I would think.
@@francisjohnification no slashing requires a surprising amount of penetration to be deadly in a sense for a swift dispatch of a living being near the size of a human being. sure you might be able to inflict a deadly injury with it but a deadly injury and a swift dispatch is a different story
@@francisjohnification yeah. considering the design of the blade. I am almost 100% certain it falls under the category of a "tool" rather than a "weapon" . are you able to kill with it? possibly? but I doubt it does much against conscious clothed and armed opponents. but as the video said if you are like captured, and you are bound to something yeah then this could be really useful.
Hello Aaron my friends uncle was one of the 30 assault unit and he is going to France we’re his uncle got killed I believe, I would love to maybe give him a present like your coin, would you be willing to sell it to me so I can give it to him, kind regards Denny
@dennygledhill4691 hi Denny. Sorry I'm not going to part with this coin as it's part of my personal collection. Much respect to your friends uncle! I hope your friend enjoys his trip to France and tracing his uncles footsteps! All the best Aaron

It looks like a "John Wayne" can opener for K-rations to me. The real ones were probably easy to lose. So they DIYed their own...

Agreed. Swift IS essential. 👍

@@BaDitO2 Given that you can kill with a pair of soft fuzzy pink bunny slippers, this can be deadly.
