      I didn't get into the background on my mentioning it more as a Polish city and that's because a doctor friend back in the 1930s and early 40s had family in Wilno. He mentioned it several times in his memoirs and how his family had to leave once the Soviet Union rolled in. Anyway, you are right it's a great city regardless. @dripsnisnx8388

      Situation is and was far more complex. Lithuania speaking Lithuanian is a XX century project. Čiurlionis and others learnt Lithuanian being adult people. Narutowicz family story deserves a great movie. Oscar Milosz, from what is now Belarus and he spoke Polish, not Lithuanian was among the most important creators of Lithuania project.

       @TravelwithMrJon it is called Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth (16th -18th century, great project, huge and flourishing on par with France or England those days). And yes, at that time Polish influence was huge, because it was closer to the west, more developed and king was residing there. So aristocracy and nobility, who wanted to get close to the court or look cool, they started to speak polish and got slowly polonized. Common people not so much, especially outside the city. But life was too good there and people didn't have enough will to fight (same as before fall of Roman empire or now in the western civilization), so Commonwealth was completely partitioned in 1795 and russians got Vilnius. After WW1 (in 1918) Lithuania got independence and Vilnius was very international those days. But neither polish nor russian influence was enough to remove lithuanian roots. And yeah, Poland decided to occupy Vilnius in 1919 and had it till 1939... They lost it to russians again, then germans came during WW2, then russians again. But finally from 1991 it is Lithuanian. And very lithuanian, while accepting lots of international people in capital. For polish people who feel nostalgia, i can say fu*k off and forget it. Some germans lived in Paris during WW2 for like few years, they might feel nostalgia too.

    [30:43] - This was a statue of King Mindaugas 👑, Lithuania’s first and only crowned king! it’s right in front of the Lithuanian National Museum in Vilnius. Mindaugas was the guy who brought the Lithuanian tribes together back in the 13th century and made Lithuania an official kingdom in 1253. Pretty cool, right? 🇱🇹
    Fun fact: Since he’s the only crowned king Lithuania ever had, you could say he really nailed the job-nobody dared to try after him! 😄

    That Gate of Dawn at 6:24 is actually the only remaining gate of Vilnius city, and the wall on the right is the Vilnius city defensive wall. If you were to walk along that wall for a few hundred meters, you would come to the Vilnius defensive wall bastion.

      @TravelwithMrJon  3 дні тому +1

      It is what it is… I can’t change the history of the city whether it was a 19 year period or not. You can ignore the past if you like and the fact it was a Polish city before WW2. @ColdBeer I have many Polish viewers so there’s a reason why I said it and the fact I had a doctor friend whose family grew up there prior to the war. I do understand it has a much longer Lithuanian history (lifetime) and for that I look forward to learning more in the years to come. You'll note I believe I only mentioned Vilno in the beginning of a 51 minute long video.

I have called Gdansk, Danzig once or twice during my vlogs there. Same with Breslau and Stettin. Please educate your self before saying that, as its is consider to be propoganda of rozzia. And is disrespectful to Lithuiania people.

      Yes propaganda when I also wrote they were part of other empires as well. Look it up yourself they both were cities under Poland during the interwar years from 1919 - 1939. That’s the truth and facts. I can't change that from the history books I studied in the USA. It seems like as though you may need to educate yourself on the history of the region as opposed to going after to me. If you think it’s propaganda and gave up after 3 minutes it’s all good. You made me laugh :) As I've lived in both Italy and Poland and traveled throughout Europe from the west to east. You do know the UA-cam algorithm loves the word BEST and that helps. With that said though, I truly enjoy Vilnius. For me I like the energy and it's not as crowded as say Rome or Paris. I enjoy it more than Tirana or Belgrade. I like the country overall but would agree there are some depressed places for sure.
