A lot of beautiful coins there, my favourite being the 1970 set of old £sd UK currency, but the star of the show for me was the HMS Kelly / Mountbatten. The reason: Here is an excerpt of my fathers wartime recollections for the WW2 BBC Peoples war posted to the internet…. As a Dispatch Rider, my life was very busy and dangerous, guiding the convoy of 80 Squadron vehicles across the Corinth Canal and eventually to ‘Kalamata’ to await rescue by Sunderland aircraft. Unfortunately, the Sunderland’s were shot down so we dispersed amongst tree’s etc, and eventually ‘holed up ‘in a disused brewery yard. It seemed we must be captured until we obtained boxes of oranges which we laid out on the brewery square ground, spelling out ‘SOS’ ‘SOS ‘HELP’. This was observed by one of our aircraft, and rescue arrived by way of ‘HMS’ Kelly’ (Mountbatten as Captain) which came close inshore to take us aboard eventually transferring us to a Coastal Steamer the ‘SS Costa Rica’ anchored a mile or two off shore. Unfortunately, the following day the ship was attacked by the Germans and sunk. My father used to say ‘I don’t know why I am still alive’ with so many near misses carrying out his duties. He passed from Covid in April 2020 aged 102. Will definitely look to purchase this when posted to BCC’s website if the price is manageable. 🙂
I started in silver coins by buying these commemorative crowns at coin fairs - spot price was about £11 (2017, I think), meaning that a sterling crown contained £9-worth of silver, and the trick was to find them cheap or near to spot price, at fairs and on the Internet. The 1977 Silv. Jubilee was the 'common' one, but even that is climbing in price now and attracting more bids. Crowns are better value for your money per gram of silver than a Britannia or any of the other sovereign-mint 1 oz. coins (Maple, Panda, Eagle, Koala, Philharmonic, Krugerrand, etc.)
So many cool coins, I really like the Jersey 🇯🇪 proof £1 set, the 🇷🇺 Bolshoi ballerina and the Solomon Islands 🇸🇧 and so many more Great stuff Christopher & BCC 👍🏻
Another good video. It is fascinating to see what other people have collected and the enormous variety of coins available. I suspect that this was an “estate sale” judging by the dates which make it a bit sad.
