I couldn't figure out why I didn't like the trilogy for a long time. Musically, it's similar to their 90's sound in a lot of places but the chord progressions just weren't as interesting and too recycled from past songs. Way too many Major chord progressions, too. Needed some minor progressions to give it more bite. The lyrics also just felt completely uninspired. Nimrod and Dookie are still 2 of my favorite records. Hard to believe the same guy who produced Dookie also did the trilogy.
It did feel like they were returning to their 90s roots at first with the Trilogy, almost like an extended Shenanigans, but it just feels very bland, nothing sticks out and I forget all the songs after I listen to it. Recycled is the perfect word.

We listened to all the albums lol, what more is their to know? How do we "know" the albums? How many times am i suppose to listen to the albums to know them?
father of all really is terrible. it's a lot worse than the trilogy. it's an offense to the hives to even compare. the trilogy has some very good 16 songs in it. bad lyrics, lazy production, but good songs. 21st century is not a better record than american idiot. it has less memorable songs, less punk rock, less innovation, less zeitgeist. the songs i truly dislike (besides nightlife, which is atrocious) are the melodramatic arena ballads. things like 'father to a son', 'still breathing', '21 guns', 'the forgotten' and so on...
Agree. I am sure they have not really listened to these as separate albums very often. (And, yep, they said as much. So much more to these albums than what you are going to get here). #Uno is more like their old stuff - especially #Nimrod.
I think American Idiot is still better than 21stCB. It just felt like they were trying to catch lightning in a bottle again with another vast concept album (that I love). Worst- Fancy Sauce
1:22:28 "hard on" huh huh huh
I would not say Rest is the best song on 39/Smooth, but it is amazing! I think I would pick Going to Pasalacqua as best. I'm not sure what i would pick for worst on that album, but i would never pick Rest. That being said i did predict that would be your choice for worst, so i guess i kind of understand, lol
Op Ivy cover is a contender, but it's kind of fun. We should place bets with these lists, see how many you guys can predict haha
I will defend the trilogy forever
king for a day is one of my favorites on nimrod
Thanks for the comment, you are our king for the day!
Going To Pasalacqua, Rest
Android, Dominated Love Slave
Longview, Pulling Teeth
Babs Uvula Who, Panic Song
Reject, King For A Day
Castaway, Hold On
Letterbomb, Extraordinary Girl
Peacemaker, Last Night On Earth
Carpe Diem, Kill The DJ
Lazy Bones, F*** Time
99 Revolutions, Amanda
Bang Bang, Troubled Times
Fire Ready Aim, I Was A Teenage Teenager
Look Ma No Brains, Corvette Summer
Lots of overlap with us!
Great minds fellas!
Hating on Private Ale, Teenage Teenager and Bobby Sox... ok... 😖
Look, and I say this respectfully, the guy on the left got it wrong every single time.
1039: Going to Pasalacqua/Knowledge
Kerplunk!: One for the Razorbacks/Dominated Love Slave
Dookie: When I Come Around/All by Myself
Insomniac: Walking Contradiction/Brain Stew
Nimrod: Redundant/Last Ride In
Warning: Church on Sunday/Warning
American Idiot: Whatsername/Extraordinary Girl
21st Century Breakdown: East Jesus Nowhere/¿Viva La Gloria?
Uno: Oh Love/Kill the DJ
Dos: Stray Heart/ Nightlife
Tre: The Forgotten/Drama Queen
Revolution Radio: Outlaws/YoungBlood
Father of All: Not a single good song on this album. Every single song on it is the worst.
Saviors: Bobby Sox/Living in the 20s
Even talking about other albums you are ratting on the trilogy when you don't even know the albums. That was weird.
We listened to all the albums lol, what more is their to know? How do we "know" the albums? How many times am i suppose to listen to the albums to know them?
@@PunkRockRadar Elliot admitted to not listening and skipping the songs. :D
@connors7078 When I was younger lol, not for this video
Last of the American Girls sounds like the most bland and cringe radio rock from that era. Probably the worst song on that record for me.
father of all really is terrible. it's a lot worse than the trilogy. it's an offense to the hives to even compare. the trilogy has some very good 16 songs in it. bad lyrics, lazy production, but good songs.
Uno sounds nothing like The Network wtf lol
Foxboro Hottubs more than The Network.
Agree. I am sure they have not really listened to these as separate albums very often. (And, yep, they said as much. So much more to these albums than what you are going to get here). #Uno is more like their old stuff - especially #Nimrod.
@@PunkRockRadar NOPE. That is #Dos.
Man. I HATE 21st Century Breakdown and I enjoyed Dos a lot. 🤷♂️
King for a day is my favorite off of nimrod 🥲
I think American Idiot is still better than 21stCB. It just felt like they were trying to catch lightning in a bottle again with another vast concept album (that I love). But for me the tracks just don't compare.
American Idiot > Know Ur Enemy
Holiday > East Jesus Nowhere
WMUWSE > 21 Guns
Jesus of Sub > American Eulogy
Blvd Is Broken Dreams > Restless Heart Syndrome
She's A Rebel > Last of the American Girls
I always felt like it was unfairly cast under the shadow of American Idiot. There is definitely elements of imitating American Idiot but 21st Century definitely stands on its own imo.
