      most people cant and dont want to afford stuff like this. It costs alot of money to upgrade or change infrastructure to accommodate products like this efficiently or effectively. The only real people that can do it are the US, China, Russia, and maybe Israel. Most of those customer options arent really favored in the eyes of the people wanting to sell them because they have to also consider the political and social fallout of servicing certain customers. To put it quite bluntly, the economics of warfare are very very VERY complicated today.

    Ok, hear me out here... I was thinking at first "man it would be cool if this plane had an integrated gun like the A-10, so it could drop down and engage ground targets in emergency CAS operations from an ISR role"... but then after reading about the multiple nose bays on the plane for integration of AESA, EO, Tpod, etc. and how heavy the GAU-30 is in the A-10. I thought "When are we going to see a plane with a smaller caliber (maybe 20mm) fully gimballed auto-cannon in the nose/belly." Imagine a plane like the Scorpion, outfitted with no ordnance, flying an ISR mission, is vectored to an area where ground troops are in trouble. Carrying its EW payloads on the wings, and a radar in the nose, the scorpion could deploy a gimballed autocannon, drop down low and provide accurate fire on a a location designated by a JTAC or the WSO.... I cant stop thinking about this idea now! lol

    • @RedXlV
      @RedXlV Рік тому

      If you want something smaller and lighter than the A-10 but still having a cannon that can easily pierce the roof of a tank, the answer isn't smaller caliber but fewer barrels. The Bushmaster II chain gun and Oerlikon KCA revolver cannon both fire the same 30x173mm round as the GAU-8/A. While the rate of fire is much lower, I would think that since targeting systems have so vastly improved, you don't necessary need as many shots to kill a tank. The KCA was actually tested by the Air Force 50 years ago as the GAU-9, as a backup weapon for the A-10 in case the GAU-8 got cancelled. (In which case two GAU-9s would've mounted side by side in the nose.)

    I think it would be great for smaller nations that are allied with you so they can use them as coastal patrol aircraft as spotters and having the ability to defend it s self depends what you place on them . lets say you have some Island nations working with you , in the overall picture , they place less stress on the major fighters doing patrolling and integrate between them and their big brothers are ready to take over.
    The smaller aircraft can also loiter longer... they could place missile pods or even some larger ordnance and it is quicker than a helicopter and maybe better in some rolls or using a combination them, and that little jet engine can move a little quicker and it easy to get parts for them . But people you know what....no one would not do that because their is not enough money for them, if one day the shit hits the fan, countries will be raiding the bone yards to fly any thing even if it a one way trip.

      The KAI A-50 is a superb light attack jet that PhAF already has. It has the pedigree of the multirole F-16 at a much lower operating cost base. You would be better off in investing in a 2-platform system: Tucanos for CI/CAS roles and A-50s for full-scale air strikes.

  • @TrangleC
    @TrangleC Рік тому

    I find it quite logical that this never went anywhere. It might be cheaper to operate than a A-10, but other than that offers barely any advantages over the system it might have replaced. The biggest issue is that it pretty much needs long and well maintained runways to operate from, which is one of the reasons why the A-10 doesn't work in its intended role anymore.

    Sometimes you just need something that can fly higher & faster than an attack helicopter to drop a couple bombs on a poorly equipped ground force.
    If they do buy it, it'll basically replace the A-10.
    Mind you the A-10 is "better"... but it's gun tends to slowly destroy it's airframe with recoil. So A-10's can't be used forever like the B-52.

    The Scorpion can never be an A-10 light version, the pilot and crew are not armor protected to enemy fire, and the engines and intakes are low and restrict under wing hard point for weapons. Where as the A-10 engines are mounted high in the back protected by armor.
    The overall design of a new light version of a CAS aircraft should be modeled after the A-10 because of its intelligent and simple design.
    The Scorpion, and the Super Tucano are not designed that way, they are like the a patrol cars in the air armed with machine guns, bombs and missiles.

      The Scorpion and Super Tucano aren't meant to entirely replace the A10, they're meant to just replace the A10's role in the middle East against terrorist. They're designed for combat were the enemy will have minimal anti air capabilities, if any at all. And for that, the super Tucano and scorpion are perfect. The hard points are fine, at least for the super Tucano. You can find plenty of pictures of a super Tucano that has gun pods, missiles, and bombs on it. It may just be a "patrol car" with wings, but you don't need a flying tank to fight minimally armored terrorist. The A10 is just too expensive for something that is an unnecessary overkill. Like I mentioned earlier, however, the A10 is still staying in service, and it will be for quite a while, because should the enemy have AA or a tank, that's what you'll want out there

Machine guns suck for air to air and suck for fast mover CAS. A-10 isn't replace by any jet . It's the Superpower for ground attack and support groups ! In another hand usa has already F16 for high altitude ground attack and high speed attack jet . If you talk about mow jet ground attack for poor countries , it's another problem. If Usa will let down A-10 i am sure than a lot of countries would like to buy it for second hand . India , Australia , France etc...

    For a light ground attacker the A29 Super Tucano is a much better option. It is cheaper and easier to maintain. The cost of 1 hour in the air is a fraction of any jet plane. And it is a combat tested airplane in many diferent scenarios from Colombia to Afheganistan. It is also used by severa Ari Forces including the RAF so you won't have problems with spare parts. And in adition when the time came to replace them it will be easier to find buyers.

      It cost $18.8 million per A-10 plane in the mid-late 70s dollars, not today dollars, to build.. An A-10 costs $6,273 per hour compared to the Textron Scorpian $3000 per hour to fly.. $1,000,000 in 1976 is equivalent to $4,526,720.72 today. So a new A-10 today would cost at least $85 million per plane based on the 1976 cost of $18.8 million per plane, but probably more. So $20 million for a Textron Scorpion is relatively inexpensive. Keaton Smith, please get your facts correct. I got the facts with multiple web searches.
