As I mentioned in an earlier post but was not published you have to correct your history. The Filipinos rebelled against Spain in 1896 and declared its own independence in June 12,1898 with its first president Emilio Aguinaldo. At around the same time the US and Spain had a war that ended in Spain seceding Guam and Puerto Rico and selling Philippines to the US for $20M. The US proceeded to colonize the new Independent Philippines which ended in over 200K Filipino casualties. Philippines became a US colony until WW2 where Filipinos were conscripted in the US Armed Forces that fought the Japanese occupants.

The Philippines has a diverse history. Started from Hinduism and Buddhism Influence, then to Islamic Influence where Trading Grew and Flourished, then to the Spanish Empire where Catholicism grew, then to become a US Colony where Protestantism and the English Language Grew , then to become occupied by the Japanese Empire, and then finally become independent. Looking back at this vid. I'd say I was more impressed with the earlier parts of it because rarely does that part get tackled, up to the conflict with the early Spanish territory vs the Muslims. We, Filipinos, tend to say "Tangkilikin ang sariling atin" which literally means to "love your own". But given how we were influenced by various cultures, colonized for hundreds of years, is there really something that we can truly call our own? Even our own country name isn't our own..
Yes. Pretty much. All I saw was a hot mess. I understand where I come from now in regards to the strong religious backgrounds and colonization throughout history ~ but it doesn't mean I like it. When I thought Filipinos look Chinese, I met one who looked Samoan. When I met one who looked Samoan, I met one who looked Chinese. Some of them look like Latin Americans and Turkish. I can never tell what an original Filipino looks like and now I know why because of this video.

Some ethnic groups are not colonized here in my country Philippines. And they are really the Native Filipino's. But if we trace it back from the past history of colonization of Spain, Japan, Americans, Almost all Filipino's are mixed raced.

I appreciate the video in giving a great run down and summary of our people’s history. I did however notice the omission of the Philippine-American war, as well as the Moro rebellion that took place during American occupation. As a Filipino born in the US, American colonialism in the Philippines was only brought up one time in high school. I’m thankful to the US for the opportunities it has given me and my family, but I also recognize that the country may not always act in the best interest of people who look like me.
My cousin was stationed in the Philippines during the Vietnam war. He always said it was his favorite place on earth. When he retired from the post office, he went back. And stayed! Hasn't back here for 15 years. It must be pretty all right.

I'm Dutch and the differences between our countries are so huge that I'm very interested in this culture and history. Just the fact that they're an archipellago of course says enough. As if the sound suddenly stopped. I was watching with English subtitles on and these subtitles did continue the sentences that were cut off. You may want to look into that. :)
They missed out the bit when Britain took the Philippines from the Spanish in 1764 but had to give it back because of a treaty between Britain and Spain in 1766
Actually the British didn't took all of the philippines but occupied a small part of the Philippines which is manila until the end of the 7 years war they only used Philippines as a Military Stationary Land so the british didn't do much to govern the occupied land like what you guys saying that the british were to ones who bring English in the Philippines

AbuMinar in my Elementary, I recall just briefly mentioning Pre-colonial life, but nothing with the Hindu Kingdoms, Islamic Sultanates within, or any outside influence. In HS, the focus really was just Spain and just Spain to the Philippines. I didn’t know anything about the circumstances that Spain went to the East Indies besides the “God, Gold, Glory” moniker that was so commonly said in those days :v

The textbooks do not go in-depth about our pre-colonial history. A good chunk of elementary and high school history can be summarized as "Spain colonized us and they did bad things".

My German wife is a yoga teacher and she shares stories during her classes but they some of them were really familiar. @@baconbrown5783 I know that animism and shammanism are the first religions in the philippines because most filipinos before islam came worship the Bathala (Creator of the Heavens) and also the spirits of nature such as the diwatas and anitos. And most of the shammans in ancient philippines are women called babaylan. Hinduism and Buddhism only came later. And then the muslim merchants and missionaries came introducing sufi islam. Just when I thought I was already a history nerd, then the information came that Aztecs and the Ottomans also battled in the Philippines. Whoa that's cool.
It's kinda exaggerated though. Let's say 5,000 troops. Out of those 5k, Majority were the Spanish Filipino Allies let's say 4k. 500 were Spaniards, 200 Mexican Born Spaniards, Aztec were 300.. It's the same with Bruneian Side. Majority of them were Bruinean. But the Author makes it sound like that it's an Ottoman vs Aztec Battle. Which in fact they were barely a few.
The culture of Filipinos has grown throughout the years of colonization. Due to the influences brought by colonizers and traders, we would not have our culture now - filled with diversity and richness. This video has refreshed my memory about our history and the origin of our culture. As a student, I only recall parts that were given more attention in school. Specifically, this is from the period of Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines up to the present day. I commend the video creator for producing such a detailed and well-organized narration of the history of the Philippines. Discussing the history that goes way back to our pre-colonial roots did not only refresh my mind but helped me acquire more relevant knowledge. In 12 minutes, the narrator summarized our long history from the influences brought by the Indian culture to Southeast Asia up to the present Republic of the Philippines. The information provided by the video creator was carefully thought of as it showed a proper sequencing of events that happened in the Philippines. Our current practices, traditions, and beliefs are traced back to the significant events in the early eras. For instance, Filipinos have different beliefs and religions because of the introduction of Islam, Muslim, and Christianity brought by colonizers throughout the years. Due to the influences of the Indian culture, we were able to develop Baybayin and other traditional writings. With other countries’ desire to colonize the land full of riches and resources, the Philippines became a battleground for power and control. Even if such incidents happened, we still got our freedom and independence. This video made me realize how huge the impacts of other countries’ cultures are on our diverse and inclusive culture. To sum up, it was interesting that the video creator did not focus too much on the Hispanic period as it was not the only era that greatly influenced the Phillippines. They gave us comprehensive information regarding the pre-Hispanic period as well. Lastly, I would like to commend the video creator for using a credible source. They based the information on the published book, “The Roots of the Filipino Nation: Volume 2” of O.D. Corpuz. With this in mind, I would recommend people, especially young Filipinos, to watch this informative video to have a grasp of the Philippines History.
Honestly, school didn’t help that much in researching about the period of the Philippines, as you just memorise stuff, there are many museums in Manila to help (though I wish I can live there) and many of early Philippine history had been lost because of stuff

only the rulers and precolonial upper class were hindu-buddhist, the majority of the common precolonial people were animists who later on syncretize some few influences from the hindu-buddhist ways. islam also wasnt that big in precolonial philippines. only sulu, maguindanao, lanao, palawan, and parts of maynila were muslim, meaning only the western encrouching edges nearest to malaysia and indonesia had muslim influences and many of them like those in maynila only had nominal muslim rulers in name just to be able to have closer diplomatic ties with those in malaysia and indonesia

we are one of few (i don't know the others) countries that has ethnic ambiguity. Also one of the reasons why to this this day, we still fighting our identity -- if you haven't heard of it, we have identity crisis. I'm guessing, that term came from the spanish word Chabacano.. but we changed the B to a V.. because if you think about it. the word chabacano doesn't really sound all that great.. but by changing it to V.. voila!!! we can own it! .. wierd but yeah.. that's us.

It's not the Americans who ousted the Spaniards, it's the Filipino revolutionists, the American's were just watching and waiting for the outcome of the war between Spain and Philippines. When the Spaniards were outhanded they thought it's a smart idea to sell the Philippines to the Americans than concede to the little brown Filipinos. So that's literally it, we weren't freed after winning the battle and have to endure another decades of hardships. You won't see this in most textbooks though.

They prefer being nice to protecting themselves from people who don't even know HOW to be nice. Filipino don't cling to the past, which is why this history surprises so many of them. They live in today and hold hope for the future. If you want to really get the story, find a Filipino HISTORIAN and ask...or better still, come to this wonderful land, meet these beautiful people and enroll in a class taught by a FILIPINO professor of history. For some reason I'm kind of not shocked Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas were sent to the Philippines to fight against the Ottomans, Indians, Egyptians, ect because today a lot of descendants of those Indians are Hispanics. Most Hispanics have a mix between Native American, Spanish, and African ancestry. I'm half Hispanic and I did a dna test and I found out I was 15% Native American and 15% Spanish. My dad has to be at least over 30% Native American if I am half Hispanic and I have 15%.

@@tyisen5125 no doubt about that. Main forces would be concentrated in Eastern Europe and in the Meditteranean though. I doubt they would spend that time, money and manpower over a backwater region. These were again, probably just hired mercenaries. Ottoman forces when waging war would number in the hundreds of thousands. Battles in Southeast Asia rarely reached numbers like these, which made them very easy prey due to the nature of how Europeans played war.

I know a lot about Philippine history but some of the things mentioned here are very new to me, and are totally mind blowing. I never knew that the fight for the islands between Christian Spain and Muslim Brunei involved so many other peoples like the Aztecs and Ottomans! FASCINATING STUFF! As a Filipino, I can be confident in saying that I've learned more things in this 12 minute video than I was thought in school. Philippine history tend to be extremely revisionist. I like the way you handled the Battle of Mactan thing by simply saying he was killed by Lapu Lapu, that one battle is extremely controversial and is subject to heavy revisionism. The battle of Mactan portrayed in our books is heavily mystified. You dodged a lot of trouble with that one decision. Hopefully this video doesn't get overrun by Pinoy pride comments. Thanks to this video, we were able to learn a lot of things that are not usually taught in school. Through this, I was able to learn not only the history of the Philippines, but also what Filipinos experienced and what they witnessed. It helps me understand the essence of the Philippines culture and faith.
@KOKO Martin I already graduated from the old curriculum, grade school and high school level - prior to the K-to-12 curriculum of today. (I also graduated college also) When I was in grade school that time, I think these stories where not told in a wider aspect. The highlights of our social studies that time where the few details about datus (which is almost near to the imminent invasion of spaniards). Then after that, most of the stories are from the spaniards and its subsequent events.

As I mentioned in an earlier post but was not published you have to correct your history. The Filipinos rebelled against Spain in 1896 and declared its own independence in June 12,1898 with its first president Emilio Aguinaldo. At around the same time the US and Spain had a war that ended in Spain seceding Guam and Puerto Rico and selling Philippines to the US for $20M. The US proceeded to colonize the new Independent Philippines which ended in over 200K Filipino casualties. Philippines became a US colony until WW2 where Filipinos were conscripted in the US Armed Forces that fought the Japanese occupants.

Looking back at this vid. I'd say I was more impressed with the earlier parts of it because rarely does that part get tackled, up to the conflict with the early Spanish territory vs the Muslims. I appreciate the video in giving a great run down and summary of our people’s history. I did however notice the omission of the Philippine-American war, as well as the Moro rebellion that took place during American occupation. As a Filipino born in the US, American colonialism in the Philippines was only brought up one time in high school. I’m thankful to the US for the opportunities it has given me and my family, but I also recognize that the country may not always act in the best interest of people who look like me.

I went to a public school and these topics were taught in Elementary, up to highschool.
AbuMinar in my Elementary, I recall just briefly mentioning Pre-colonial life, but nothing with the Hindu Kingdoms, Islamic Sultanates within, or any outside influence. In HS, the focus really was just Spain and just Spain to the Philippines. I didn’t know anything about the circumstances that Spain went to the East Indies besides the “God, Gold, Glory” moniker that was so commonly said in those days :v

I know that animism and shammanism are the first religions in the philippines because most filipinos before islam came worship the Bathala (Creator of the Heavens) and also the spirits of nature such as the diwatas and anitos. And most of the shammans in ancient philippines are women called babaylan. Hinduism and Buddhism only came later. And then the muslim merchants and missionaries came introducing sufi islam. Then the spaniards came and introduced catholicism. Then the brits came and only stayed for a short period of time. They then give back manila to the spaniards. And the americans then came and defeated the spaniards. Bringing in and introducing protestant christianity and judaism. Then the japanese came. And finally the philippine independence after japan was defeated.

It's kinda exaggerated though. Let's say 5,000 troops. Out of those 5k, Majority were the Spanish Filipino Allies let's say 4k. 500 were Spaniards, 200 Mexican Born Spaniards, Aztec were 300.. It's the same with Bruneian Side. Majority of them were Bruinean. But the Author makes it sound like that it's an Ottoman vs Aztec Battle. Which in fact they were barely a few.

Due to the influences brought by colonizers and traders, we would not have our culture now - filled with diversity and richness. This video has refreshed my memory about our history and the origin of our culture. As a student, I only recall parts that were given more attention in school. Specifically, this is from the period of Magellan’s arrival in the Philippines up to the present day. I commend the video creator for producing such a detailed and well-organized narration of the history of the Philippines. Discussing the history that goes way back to our pre-colonial roots did not only refresh my mind but helped me acquire more relevant knowledge. In 12 minutes, the narrator summarized our long history from the influences brought by the Indian culture to Southeast Asia up to the present Republic of the Philippines. The information provided by the video creator was carefully thought of as it showed a proper sequencing of events that happened in the Philippines. Our current practices, traditions, and beliefs are traced back to the significant events in the early eras. For instance, Filipinos have different beliefs and religions because of the introduction of Islam, Muslim, and Christianity brought by colonizers throughout the years. Due to the influences of the Indian culture, we were able to develop Baybayin and other traditional writings. With other countries’ desire to colonize the land full of riches and resources, the Philippines became a battleground for power and control. Even if such incidents happened, we still got our freedom and independence. This video made me realize how huge the impacts of other countries’ cultures are on our diverse and inclusive culture. To sum up, it was interesting that the video creator did not focus too much on the Hispanic period as it was not the only era that greatly influenced the Phillippines. They gave us comprehensive information regarding the pre-Hispanic period as well. Lastly, I would like to commend the video creator for using a credible source. They based the information on the published book, “The Roots of the Filipino Nation: Volume 2” of O.D. Corpuz. With this in mind, I would recommend people, especially young Filipinos, to watch this informative video to have a grasp of the Philippines History.
Honestly, school didn’t help that much in researching about the period of the Philippines, as you just memorise stuff, there are many museums in Manila to help (though I wish I can live there) and many of early Philippine history had been lost because of stuff

Even though the Philippines is now majority Catholic, the Hindu beliefs and practices is still intact. We still believe in Gaba (Bad Karma), some believes in reincarnation, some believes in Mariit (Guards of Nature), and so many more. Philippines is more of Animist and Hindu than you ever thought.
only the rulers and precolonial upper class were hindu-buddhist, the majority of the common precolonial people were animists who later on syncretize some few influences from the hindu-buddhist ways. islam also wasnt that big in precolonial philippines. only sulu, maguindanao, lanao, palawan, and parts of maynila were muslim, meaning only the western encrouching edges nearest to malaysia and indonesia had muslim influences and many of them like those in maynila only had nominal muslim rulers in name just to be able to have closer diplomatic ties with those in malaysia and indonesia

we are one of few (i don't know the others) countries that has ethnic ambiguity. Also one of the reasons why to this this day, we still fighting our identity -- if you haven't heard of it, we have identity crisis. But all of those can be squashed by saying we are pinoys and yes we have influences but from this day ownwards, we make our own identity. I'm guessing, that term came from the spanish word Chabacano.. but we changed the B to a V.. because if you think about it. the word chabacano doesn't really sound all that great.. but by changing it to V.. voila!!! we can own it! .. wierd but yeah.. that's us.

It's not the Americans who ousted the Spaniards, it's the Filipino revolutionists, the American's were just watching and waiting for the outcome of the war between Spain and Philippines. When the Spaniards were outhanded they thought it's a smart idea to sell the Philippines to the Americans than concede to the little brown Filipinos. So that's literally it, we weren't freed after winning the battle and have to endure another decades of hardships. You won't see this in most textbooks though.

For some reason I'm kind of not shocked Aztecs, Mayans, and Incas were sent to the Philippines to fight against the Ottomans, Indians, Egyptians, ect because today a lot of descendants of those Indians are Hispanics. Most Hispanics have a mix between Native American, Spanish, and African ancestry. I'm half Hispanic and I did a dna test and I found out I was 15% Native American and 15% Spanish. My dad has to be at least over 30% Native American if I am half Hispanic and I have 15%.
This is the reason why we use the words "tiangge" and "palengke" in day to day Filipino conversation...those words were originated from the native inhabitants of Mexico...

These were again, probably just hired mercenaries. Ottoman forces when waging war would number in the hundreds of thousands. Battles in Southeast Asia rarely reached numbers like these, which made them very easy prey due to the nature of how Europeans played war.

I never knew that the fight for the islands between Christian Spain and Muslim Brunei involved so many other peoples like the Aztecs and Ottomans! FASCINATING STUFF! As a Filipino, I can be confident in saying that I've learned more things in this 12 minute video than I was thought in school. Philippine history tend to be extremely revisionist. I like the way you handled the Battle of Mactan thing by simply saying he was killed by Lapu Lapu, that one battle is extremely controversial and is subject to heavy revisionism. The battle of Mactan portrayed in our books is heavily mystified. You dodged a lot of trouble with that one decision.

Thanks to this video, we were able to learn a lot of things that are not usually taught in school. Through this, I was able to learn not only the history of the Philippines, but also what Filipinos experienced and what they witnessed. It helps me understand the essence of the Philippines culture and faith.

Yeah, history prior to the spaniard colonization was and is never been told in textbooks of our curriculums.
@KOKO Martin I already graduated from the old curriculum, grade school and high school level - prior to the K-to-12 curriculum of today. (I also graduated college also)
When I was in grade school that time, I think these stories where not told in a wider aspect. The highlights of our social studies that time where the few details about datus (which is almost near to the imminent invasion of spaniards). Then after that, most of the stories are from the spaniards and its subsequent events.
@KOKO Martin I guess. Or maybe their so brief that I almost can't remember them. I still remember how wide the quizzes are for colonizations, world war.. But not much assessment quizzes for these stories.
@KOKO Martin That bakunawa story was not told to us when studying. Some few things that I know are the constant skirmishes of datus within the philippine islands, the honesty of filipinos in transacting trades from outsiders, and the connectivity of islands throughout continents..
