  • Filmed from the drivers cab, open air observation carriage and the lineside - Part 3 takes our train under New Zealand's Southern Alps emerging from the Otira Tunnel to follow the Otira River. We then head for the West Coast passing Lake Brunner at Moana, as the vegetation changes to lush temperate rain forest.

      Thank you, I'm pleased you enjoyed it. I've spent time walking around Otira village, it's a fascinating place. I don't know if this is a true story, back in the days when the train staff happily shared tales of yesterday, one of them said the Otira pub was put up for Auction when the railway no longer needed the village to house railway workers, the guy who put in the winning bid was happy enough with his purchase only to discover he'd bought the whole village. Ripping yarn or the truth, I don't know, but I know which I prefer.

    Thanks Tim, I really enjoyed that. When I went on the tranz alpine quite a while ago we got off at Inchbonnie to stay at Lake Brunner Lodge - which was excellent! - and then picked up for return to Chch too. We need a statue of the guy that decided on narrow gauge for New Zealand railways so we can throw rotten fruit & veges at him!

      Thank you, it's a wonderful part of the world. As for the track gauge 3 ft 6 in, it was used to keep construction costs down,although it is interesting to note NZR purchased a number of ex British rail carriages that fit the NZ loading gauge (i.e. they fit through the tunnels, bridges and stations). I am guessing you traveled in the older carriages, the new train does give a much better ride, although the driver still gets a lively ride up front. I used this link to try and find a statue to throw rotten fruit at en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3_ft_6_in_gauge_railways

      Hi Pete, glad you enjoyed it. I've visited Arthur's Pass four times now, twice on the train and twice by road. On every occasion it was raining in Otira. I'll be back in New Zealand in February to film the return of the Coastal Pacific train (Picton to Christchurch), hopefully it will be running by then. I will be driving over the Pass, I might get lucky and see Otira in sunlight, I'm sure I'll find enough time to do a day return trip from Christchurch to Greymouth on the train as well. New Zealand is awesome, I can't get enough of the place. You'll find a few more videos from my various visits to NZ in this playlist - ua-cam.com/play/PLPdTWbkwx85pX8Zcf80fh3B2ggr_O_hLB.html

      Lucky you Tim, I too think NZ is fantastic! After many years of wanting to go there I finally made it in February, it's an amazing country and did not disappoint. Every bit as magical as I hoped it would be. I went through the pass by road both ways, saw the TranzAlpine Christchurch bound whilst in Moana. There's a restaurant right next to the station, they served me a good lunch! Only train travel I did whilst there was in Auckland on their Metro service. Nice channel and good to see a fellow Brit enjoying travelling. All the best, Pete.

      Great place to live. I was travelling on the TranzAlpine and in the same carriage was a group of smartly dressed businessmen, who were travelling by train because there had been a problem with their flight. As the scenery became more dramatic after Springfield they really started to enjoy the trip and made their way to the viewing carriage. They had all made the trip by car or by air, but never by train, towards the end of the trip one said "I'm glad we caught the train, I've never had time to enjoy the scenery before" the others agreed and left the station at Greymouth looking happy and relaxed ready for whatever business they had made the journey for. I love the drive, but it always takes me a long time, because I can't resist taking photos a every corner, especially at sunset.

    Another great video. Out of interest, how were you able to film from the cab? Presume you got permission from KiwiRail and used a GoPro or similar? But how did you keep it powered for such a long journey (presume you wouldn’t have been allowed in the cab)? And with your external shots of the train, such as in Otira, we’re these filmed on difficult days? 🤔

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Рік тому +1

      Hi, this was filmed using a GoPro 3 Black edition and an external power pack. The GoPro 3 wasn't a good camera, it suffered from a jelly effect as a result of vibration when the locomotive was working hard. Today’s GoPro’s have overcome this problem. It used to be straight forward to get permission to film from the cab, today it is near impossible as I discovered on my 2019 visit when after gaining permission to film both the Coastal Pacific and the TransAlpine from the cab before I travelled from the UK, I was refused on the day by some faceless health and safety guy much to the disappointment of the marketing guy who fully realise the advertising potential of UA-cam. I’d arranged permission via a friend who worked as a Wellington suburban train driver, he had also arranged to joined me for both trips, unfortunately they were so short of drivers that they refused to allow him to use his holiday days as requested. The external shots were filmed the following day. KiwiRail has changed, no longer a friendly bunch of people happy to share their wonderful railway, sadly today they are just people doing their job with little or no passion. On my first visits to NZ to ride the Scenic trains, they were in the hands of people who really cared about the passenger experience, today passengers get in the way of an efficient train service, especially those trying to buy a coffee or a sandwich from the cafe carriage. There are still some great people working for KiwiRail, but they are not to be found in the public relations department. It’s worth speaking to Dunedin Railways or Steam Incorporated they are more likely to be helpful.

    • @FromtheWindowSeat
      @FromtheWindowSeat Рік тому

      @@Timsvideochannel1 That’s useful to know. Appreciate the comprehensive response! On the upside, they do have a an image and video library which UA-camrs can access. And it must be said the onboard crew and very friendly and helpful. But yes, it’s a shame you can’t get access to the cab anymore.

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Рік тому +1

      @@FromtheWindowSeatMost of the railway workers I meet are nice people, it's the faceless bureaucrats who are the real problem, they were helpful when I first started visiting New Zealand. As a tourist visiting at 1 to 3 year intervals I notice the changes. New Zealand is a very difficult place to tour by rail, a camper van is the only real option unless you don't mind an organised coach tour. It is also difficult to visit the heritage railway sites because most only open one day a month. I tried to get the tour company I usually travel with to arrange a tour of NZ using various tour trains owned by societies and individuals such as Mainline Steam, Steam Incorporated, Dunedin Railways and Pahiatua Railcar Society Incorporated. They said whilst they are happy to advertise and market such a tour, it is something that really needs to be put together by a NZ travel company and marketed by specialist tour companies around the world. The numbers on such tours would also be sufficient to make it worthwhile for heritage sites to open when tours visit. This is common practice in Europe, but sadly for the moment the only NZ rail tours on offer are the three KiwiRail Scenic trains. I should also mention that the best rail adventure I've experienced in NZ is the rail-carts on the old SOL line. I love NZ, but I can’t help wondering why a government that promotes green policies is doing nothing to promote the use of the railways outside Auckland and Wellington.

    • @FromtheWindowSeat
      @FromtheWindowSeat Рік тому

      @@Timsvideochannel1 Oh right. That's interesting to know. I've only been to New Zealand once (last year) and I was blown away by the scenery, so I'll definitely be back. I get what you're saying about behind-the-scenes bureaucrats, although I think that issue is a lot more widespread than KiwiRail ... you could call it the corporatisation effect. I've tried a few times to get into loco cabs but because of health and safety rules and insurance etc, it seems almost impossible. Yes, I guess the thing about New Zealand is there's a mismatch between its green credentials and what happens on the ground ... there's progress is some areas (mostly Auckland and Wellington as you say) but it's slow and inconsistent. Perhaps for me it wasn't as shocking as you, as I quickly discovered New Zealand is very much like Australia (where I live), where people and politicians are obsessed with car travel (sadly). I didn't find out about the rail-carts until I was back in Australia but that sounds like a terrific experience! I also get what you mean about the difficulties with tours ... because of the limited running days of the long-distance trains, it was quite the logistical effort planning a trip to be able to do all three, and as you say, I had to hire cars for large portions of the trip. In New Zealand, as in Australia, rail has so much potential but it's hard to get it on the political agenda. Cheers!

    • @Timsvideochannel1
      @Timsvideochannel1  Рік тому +1

      @@FromtheWindowSeatHello, Oz and NZ do have a lot in common, I'm glad you enjoyed visiting NZ and I'm sure you'll enjoy your next visit, especially now that you have a better idea what there is to see. Queensland Rail is one of Australia's best kept secrets, they run some wonderful trains at reasonable prices, the trouble is that outside of Australia few people are aware of trains such as the one that runs between Brisbane and Longreach. Channels like yours do more to promote train rides than the sites run by the railways themselves. I use UA-cam to get ideas when planning my own trips. I live in the UK where trains have made a big comeback as our roads become ever more overcrowded. I also travel regularly all over Europe where the history of the railways can be seen first-hand when travelling in and out of the former Communist countries, it's like time travel one moment back in the 60's, then you cross a border and you are back in the modern world. There are a number of railways in East Germany running timetabled trains 365 days a year haul by steam locomotives. Here is my New Zealand Playlist (some of the early videos were filmed before I even knew about UA-cam, hence the quality of some is a bit suspect) - ua-cam.com/play/PLPdTWbkwx85pX8Zcf80fh3B2ggr_O_hLB.html Best wishes. Arthurs Pass and Otira existed as isolated railway communities for many years, because in the past electric locomotives were attached to take trains through the steeply graded tunnel, today specially adapted diesel locomotives do the job, with the aid of massive fans to blow the fumes out of the tunnel.

      Hi, thanks for commenting, you have to be very lucky to cross the New Zealand Alps without encountering rain at some point.The windscreen wipers are annoying, but they did their job and kept the screen clear. I left the parts affected by them in, as I figured that those who find then annoying could always speed past those bits, and those who preferred to see the whole route, could.

    Are overcast days the norm? Too much details are lost and thus interest to watch deminishes rapidly!

      Sadly, rain on the West Coast of New Zealand is a regular occurrence, hence the wonderful rain forest.

    Would love to see some coal trains climbing the steepest grade being assisted by the helpers.

      Five locos at the head of a fully loaded coal train heading for the Otira tunnel is an awesome sight. This isn't one of my videos, but at around the 7 minute mark the creator does a great job of capturing the sights and sounds of one of those coal trains - ua-cam.com/video/pZAtTnI3CSo/v-deo.html

    The screen wipers made me ill. Why did you shoot during inclement weather. Thumbs down!
