DAINESE D-AIR SYSTEM: SHOULD YOU GET ONE? | Review and how to Activate

  • Because I ride every day, I am always looking for the best gear to stay protected in the event I get hit or go down. Enter the Dianese D-air Smart jacket. Motorcycle airbags have been tested for over 25 years now in moto GP and now they are available to normal people like us.
    When I heard that this jacket inflated is worth 7, YES 7, of my standard back protectors I knew it was crazy not to even check it out. Now the only major setback is the price. The D-air seems to be the most expensive in the airbag lineup, but when you look at things like; NO ongoing subscription fees, complete FREEDOM from being tethered to the bike, and slimline design, well... That just makes it a no-brainer.
    The Competition is charging far more and the benefits seem to be in the D-air's favor in my opinion. The closest animal would be the Alpinestars Tech-Air 5, but many customers say that the tight unbreathable fit is HELL during summer. I will say it's not even fully Summer here in Portugal and already I am getting hot in my airbag. Let's see how it fairs through the summer. Winter it will be a welcome companion to keep me warm.
    I wear the D-Air inside my REVIT Sand 3 jacket. Now, remember you can't wear too many extra layers because the airbag needs room to inflate should the occasion arise. I look forward to giving a long-term review later down the road. I imagine we will see more and more Motorcycle jacket companies making this a standard addition to their jackets.
    If you are in the market for a motorcycle airbag the D-AIR is definitely worth a second, third, fou....ahhh just get one.
    Ride safe and see you on the pavement!
    For all my gear that I use see the links below.
    As I am growing the channel keep SUBSCRIBING, keep SHARING, and keep LIKING as every little bit counts.

    Features:
    D-Air, MotoGP airbag technology
    Wearable under or over any jacket or outfit
    Seven on-board sensors
    Data is monitored 1,000 times per second
    The algorithm detects low-sides, high-sides, and object vehicle and rear-end collisions
    Collisions are detected even when stopped, e.g. rear-end collision at a stop light
    26hr battery life
    No hard-shell parts - airbag provides protection only when needed
    Chest protection meets or exceeds CE Level 2 for airbags, transmitted force is less than 2.5kN
    Standard armor CE level 2 transmits less than 9kN so the airbag disperses over 3x more energy than its rigid counterpart
    Back protection meets or exceeds CE Level 1 for airbags, transmitted force is less than 4.5kN
    Standard armor CE level 1 transmits less than18kN so the airbag disperses over 4x more energy than its rigid counterpart

    Been riding with a Helite turtle 2 but you make a very good point about the needing to be thrown off the bike with enough force to activate the bags so have ordered a couple of sizes of the Dainese! Thanks for your insight my man

      You won’t regret it. I did have a false activation of the airbag last month. I sent it to Dainese and just got it back yesterday. They fixed it no problem. I’m good to go again.

    Just brought one of those jackets and had trouble finding the right side cord to plug in. Well hidden amongst other cords on the right. The left side was pretty straightforward - had to take it back to store & they also found it hard to. I tried to find your clip again but couldn’t find it till now. Wish I had liked it to save time. All activated just waiting for first full charge. Thanking you.

    Great video, thank you for do this. Question. I ride an adventure bike on and off road. But the off road stuff is very tame. If I wanted to de-activate the jacket when doing some gentle off roading, is it just a matter of un-snapping the magnetic studs?

    • @AmericanAbroad1
      @AmericanAbroad1  9 місяців тому

      Yes! But it also has an off-road mode you can set where it’s less sensitive. But I would just turn it off if your doing off road.
      Yes it’s as simple as unsnapping the button.

    Pros, it's water proof so can wear outside clothes ( jacket) it fits around waste so can make it more awkward under jackets. No back protector so if battery flat no back protector. You have to plug into laptop to check charge level ( two main draw back for me) errrr takes ages, if could use blue tooth and phone. I've had one three years and swapped to a klim subscription because off above issues. 8f it does go off costs £250 to recharge. Still fantastic product will keep and use both. The coverage ( protection) does not compare.

      I have had one for nearly 3 years. Overall believe in it, but I hope never have to proove it. I often ride when it is upper 90s (F) in summer and then it is quite hot - whether under or over a mesh jacket. I still use a jacket for shoulder/ elbow protection. In the winter, obviously not an issue. However, this is the big issue people need to understand - on all my previous jackets , it was too tight under them and did not allow for an extra 2 inches of expansion if the air bag deployed, so I had to wear them over these jackets. So now I upsize all new jackets to allow for deployment of the airbag underneath. Yet I worry that this now leaves jacket sleaves a tiny bit too long, thus changing where the elbow coverage sits on the jacket. Will this leave part of elbow not protected??? Do the sleeves now feel too long? However my spine and chest are way more important for survival!. This vest appears to have excellent chest and spine protection! Was on a trip in a developing country when one of my buddies skidded out on dirt road in middle of "no where" Africa. Seven broken ribs and punctured lung - believe it he had had an air bag on, he would have been a lot better off.

    • @AmericanAbroad1
      @AmericanAbroad1  Рік тому

      Yeah... its a problem we all have. I normally layer less in winter when I have it on (Which is always). It does get very hot in summer like you are saying. In the top heat of summer if it gets over 100Degrees F, then I normally just go back to a back pad.
      I feel so much safer with this vest. I had a buddy go down hard recently and this vest saved him so much recovery time.
      I think you hit on something key. we often dont have any type of chest or side protection which leaves us super vulnerable. The vest helps a ton with that.
      Ride safe!

    hello from your review, I'm looking to buy one, but I saw there is a v1 and V2, but can't find something to see the differents, by any chance do you have more info?

    • @josejavierpaniaguazamora9320
      @josejavierpaniaguazamora9320 2 роки тому +1

      V1 is the original version. It's the same technology, the difference is that v1 is not made from abrasive resistant material. Meaning that if you go down there's a good chance that the outside fabric will be damaged to where it can't be refilled. It will still protect you during the accident but it may not be usable after. So essentially you should get v1 if you want to wear it under your regular motorcycle jacket. V2 is made from abrassion resistant material so it's good to also wear on the outside of your regular jacket and there's a good chance it will be reusable post crash. I wear the high viz because I like looking like a dork. Just ordered the ls as well which is a cool option.

    If you were buying a new air bag system today would you still choose this one? I’m seeing many out now. Alpinestars tech 3 looks similar.

    • @AmericanAbroad1
      @AmericanAbroad1  5 місяців тому +1

      I haven’t checked out the new systems much. I think the new tech air is pretty similar. I believe the Dair has 7 sensors and the alpinestars only has 6.
      I’m sure there’s some other differences but I’m very happy with my choice in the Dair. I just wish u was a little lighter

    You should mention in your video that Dainese also offers a free maintenance service after a certain amount of time (think its 2 years) if it never deployed. AND my question is: can you wash it if you sweat in it during the summer

      @@leonardobarbagallo4898 I will say, in summer this puppy is hot. It says “ventilated” on the description, but you have non breathable plastic airbag between you and that ventilation lol.
      Inside the jacket it fits tight so it’s warm. In winter it’s great. Also, it’s one more thing to carry around, but i do feel safer with it. It’s a trade off.

    Is it the same as 7 back protectors when not inflated or only when it inflates? Its not really clear. However, if you remove the back protector and it doesn't inflate suly that is a flaw. Other systems have a built in back protector. This is not overly clear, be interested to know your thoughts.

    • @AmericanAbroad1
      @AmericanAbroad1  Місяць тому +1

      Yeah it’s a big question. This vest does not have an integrated back protector. So it only gives protection inflated.
      I recently had this vest inflate randomly while I was riding down the road. It’s the first time in almost 2 year of my riding with it that it malfunctioned. Dainese is deciding now weather or not to warranty it. Which they should. I don’t want to pay $250 to redo the vest on a malfunction.
      When it inflated I thought I had been hit by a car from behind. Scared me so bad.
      I would say there are better options out there now for vests. I think alpinstar has a great one. Just make sure you get a vest that doesn’t have any monthly subscription. That’s why I chose this one.
      Happy hunting

    • @highestsprings
      @highestsprings Місяць тому

      @@AmericanAbroad1 that is useful to know. Yes, I can't see that they would charge you if it went off by mistake. Maybe it's worth highlighting the outcome on UA-cam.
      The Turtle vests seem to be the best all-around package. Although in regards to subscription the furygan vests look like they are really coming on. I am not entirely convinced that that after servicing etc a non subscription costs any less. The biggest issue is if you want to sell the vest on, it wouldn't have the smart box with it.
      I guess you could just fit the smart vest over a back protector, or, get one with a tether.

    Here is what I don’t understand. Let’s assume you have an accident which does not involve another vehicle. Let’s assume you lose control and crash. Will it deploy? Does it sense your loss of control, for example if you got some gravel on a turn, and deploy?
