My agent told me two large carriers are no longer writing new business here in CO. I have never filed a claim and have excellent credit and my rates nearly doubled this last year even with doubling my deductible. A bit unsettling.
The problem is not natural disasters. The problem is how much housing and vehicles prices have increased in such a short amount of time, therefore a total loss is very costly for insurance companies.

When I went to go get insurance for a home I bought I was told that I was uninsurable because of my renters insurance claim. I had to get insurance from a company from Germany because they understood what happened and that the fire was not my fault. A FREAKING COMPANY FROM GERMANY.

I think the insurance companies are colluding with politicians to make things quite difficult for us homeowners. It is almost not worth owning a home with the increased costs and maintenance issues that you have to take on. With the hail damage, the fire risk and all the other things that can go wrong with a home. It has become too much and everyone is going broke with just too much house.
There needs to be a government backed reinsurance of sorts. The other option would be federal laws that require that profitable insurance companies have to write a certain number of policies in states like Colorado and California or they can't write in lower risk states, etc. Without government intervention, middle and even upper middle income may no longer be able to live in the state, especially in the more desirable area. Fixed profit allowances isn't unheard of especially on essentials like home and auto insurance that hurt the majority of Americans. Let the insurers make their money on the other lines of business, investments, etc.

Only reason why I keep them around is because there aren’t many insurance companies still offering $1k deductibles, now they all charge a certain percentage, which could mean needing to have thousands of dollars available in case something were to happen - not ideal in a time of crisis.

Bus companies would shut down if there were too many pot holes , Auto Repair Sops would shut down because cars are coming in with too much oil leaking on their floors , all the airports would shut down because wind got higher than 20 miles per hour, Welders would shut down because there is a little film of rust on a piece of metal . It would be Madness !!! Personally I think they are just setting us up for a massive raise in premiums that are already too high . I've been dropped twice now in the last 3 years as they no longer do business in Colorado? Basic auto insurance has rose appx 100% , add that to the price of groceries and WTF ! Yet companies are recording record profits and the stock market is soaring? WTF!
