In depth video essays on great stories, from film to books to personal growth.
Breaking Bad | A Descent Into Darkness
Introducing a new series from The Stories We Tell: Breaking It Down. In this series, I am creating a video for each and every episode of what I consider the best show ever made: Breaking Bad.
In this video, we examine S1E2 "Cat's In the Bag" and S1E3 "And the Bag's In the River," which explore Walter White's moral dilemma of what to do with Krazy-8. We see how his decisions have unforeseen and unknowable consequences.

Happiness Only Real When Shared | The Chris McCandless Story (Grizzly Arrogance pt. 2)
Переглядів 78221 день тому
I identify with Chris McCandless in a lot of ways, however hubristic and misguided he was. He spoke of the ills of modernity, of the superficiality of American materialism, the detriments of greed and ambition, and the joys of nature and solitude. He followed his heart and his idealistic romanticization of nature, and it’s hard not to have a certain respect for his faith in his beliefs. But ult...
The Grizzly Arrogance of Man (pt. 1 - Grizzly Man)
Переглядів 304Місяць тому
Human arrogance is a core tenet of our species. We see ourselves as separate from nature, superior to animals that haven’t learned how to dominate their environment. This arrogance seeps in not only to the way we treat the natural world, but the way we treat different cultures, traditions we don’t understand, beliefs we don’t agree with, ancient wisdom we see as primitive. The world and its res...

Freedom is Constant Revolution | The Dispossessed by Ursula K. Le Guin
Переглядів 3,3 тис.2 місяці тому
“Change is freedom. Change is life.” Ursula K Le Guin’s The Dispossessed is an examination of anarchism, flaws and all, and what it means to be truly free. But it is also about much more. It’s about the power of ideas, the breaking down of societal and psychological walls, the truth hidden within layers of wrapping paper. It is about property, possession, violence, oppression, the human spirit,...

Parasite: There Is No Escape
Переглядів 3 тис.2 місяці тому
‘Parasite’, in my mind, is without a doubt Bong Joon-ho’s magnum opus, sleek, concise, effective, and simply flat-out entertaining. But more than anything, ‘Parasite’ is an allegory for how capitalism breeds status- and wealth-driven inhumanity. Little Miss Sunshine | Accepting the Absurd
Переглядів 43 тис.3 місяці тому
'Little Miss Sunshine' teaches us to accept our absurd existence, and in this acceptance, we can find joy. In this video, I bring in concepts from Albert Camus, Friedrich Nietszche, and Marcel Proust to illustrate that the suffering we feel should not be resisted, but accepted, a powerful concept to anyone who’s gone through a dark time in their life. Excellent review. Thoughtful and well-produced.
I have been loving your essays, very fantastic work. I hope you continue to make more similar although your small presence as a creator. Keep it up!

amazing work
Insightful, Walter had no good choices. But what he did causes lots of suffering for society as a whole. And the show explains how seductive going down the wrong path can be at the start.
I lived in Glendale AZ back in 1977. In that culture many of my peers wanted to get into the crime business. I tried to talk them out of it. Only one of my peers listened to me peers listened to me. I told him to get a student loan. Get a junior accounting degree, it is one semester. Get a job in that field, then take night classes to get your CPA. You can make $200,000 a year. Three decades later I found out that he listened to me. He got married, had kids and never spent a day in jail. I grew up surrounded by poverty, anger, crime and violence. So, I can relate to show like BREAKING BAD and COBRA KIA. The rest of my peers ended up dying bloody or behind bars for a longtime. It makes me sick to my stomach sees the waste and suffering that goes on in this world. Footnote, when I was in my twenties, I got into a street fight with the real-life evil karate instructor from Cobra Kia and I won that fight. I experienced a lot more of life than I ever wanted too.
Incredible opening
@@christianangelos3224 it’s always sunny in Albuquerque
Friedrich Nietszche is not a nihilist. On the contrary, he is an anti-nihilist.
@@kmyzg correct. I was referring to Dwayne being nihilistic at the beginning of the film.
@@TheStoriesWeTell303 Oh okay. My bad.
i had forgotten about this movie. i have been working on a short film for Uni and have been suffering from a lot of Imposter sindrom. as I sat down to draw some concept art I put on this video to listen to and it really helped. your interpretation and magical words definitely helped me fight the imposter off at least for the day, and for that I thank you <3
Really incredible read, this movie is a gem. Hope your channel reaches the heights!
I loved learning about him in my English class but everybody completely misunderstood him even my teacher. I was the only one who said he wasn’t crazy in my class
15:29 my buddy brought up a good point, that colonized people themselves would have been the first to understand the devastation of colonization. I don’t have the book on hand so can’t check the direct quote; but I believe in the context it was talking about westerners or scientists. Just wanted to clarify. Apologies for not making that more clear in the video
8:52. It’s not stark contrast. He comes to understand that the beauty that he sees he comes to desire living with others in it, not apart. You don’t run to the woods, he re realized that it is best to take his lessons in solitude to others.
PART TWO OUT NOW: ua-cam.com/video/MyEseyJj5Xw/v-deo.html Also, 21:45 - CORRECTION: the film in question is by Kathleen Harrison and her daughter Klea. Katherine MacLean is a leader in psychedelic research, but she is not involved with this project.
I expect royalties for the photo! Fr tho Mr. Stories, dank stuff, keep it greasy out there in Hong Kong
Incredible vid, thanks for posting!
Second only to you my man
Just the video i need. Thanks. And bro, where are you? Background looks amazing.
Breckenridge, Colorado! And Hong Kong but I don’t think that’s what you’re talking about lmao
PART 1 OF THIS VIDEO CAN BE FOUND HERE: ua-cam.com/video/vlnnSUmIECw/v-deo.html In Part 1, I discuss Werner Herzog's 'Grizzly Man'. I examine the colonial and humanist mindset that leads to the flawed and arrogant way of thinking about nature, as existing for our own consumption. I show how not only Timothy Treadwell, but even director Werner Herzog himself, exhibit this 'grizzly' arrogance. The world and its resources exist for our own consumption, not as an interconnected, complex system that we are but a mere cog in.
Have you read The Eye of the Heron?
I have not! I don't have a copy. Next le guin up for me is Lathe of Heaven. But if I find this one I will def cop
Watched this in theaters as a kid this was a heavy ass movie for a 12 year old 😂 still one of my favorite movies.
I don’t know why UA-cam recommended this video to me but really it is extremely nice. Watching it wasn’t a mistaaaaaaaaake😂 Keep the good work👍
Your white people trope is a turn off. Elitism runs in every culture. White devil trope is setting White people up to be convenient scapegoats for societies ills.....predatory capitalism is more of the problem. When everything is a Commodity nothing is sacred....that's why madness embraces nature worship, because there's little for the ego to compare itself with.
Disordered minds, magical thinking, flee to delusion when the ship is sinking
Story man mr: I liked this video. Might have been my favorite so far. 全熟
Dear Mr. Stories: Thanks! IMHO, you're doing great, please keep talking. Your line that made me laugh most: "I was laid off..." spoken from a nice room, apparently not thirsty, hungry, or sick -- So today can be all fun! Dear older viewers: At 69, I ride a bicycle anywhere I want and nobody seems to mind it. Dear younger viewers: I hope you live long enough to want a bicycle as much as you did when you were even younger. Dear Mr. Stories again: Years ago, my sister wrote on my wall, "Be nice. Work hard. Stay humble."
I was expecting Breaking Bad episode 2.
coming soon
I think that respect for other animals includes not intruding on their spaces he put himself and the bears in danger because if one did kill or wound him often those animals get put down but the bear is just defending itself and the grizzly man is being reckless and intrusive
Kinda of reminds me of this dude I know who was boasting about killing a black bear and how he set up honey traps I'm just thinking how revealing that is when it comes to our destructive relationship with the natural world and brutal disregard for the well being of other organisms people are conditioned into forsaking basic empathy and mutual coexistence
Hey Mr. The Stories We Tell! I have an internship interview in 4 hours, and your video calmed me down a whole lot. So thank you <3. I will be looking forward to stories from Asia, have a nice day.
Well guess we are checked in for a lot of good videos in the future!
Loved your content! Please keep going
this video is beautiful great job
Call me crazy, but watching this movie after the Big Lebowski is a wonderful experience.
elaborate??
@@TheStoriesWeTell303 I am no film critic or philosopher, but I draw a lot of comparisons between the two movies. The introduction of a dysfunctional and at times downright bizarre cast that is surreal if you don't have friends or family like them. Said cast of characters bumbling through a series of misadventures towards an ultimate goal that most are reluctant to pursue. The death of one character in both films and the inherent dark humor derived from how the deceased is treated in the same well-meaning but inappropriate way. Both films end with the grieving characters showing acceptance of the flaws and quirks in those they love. The only difference is that The Big Lebowski is about friendships and Little Miss Sunshine is about family. Two of the best movies ever made, but that's just like my opinion man.
@@IvanIvanoIvanovich intriguing take. I honestly haven’t seen big Lebowski in many years, a rewatch sounds like it’s in order. “That’s just like my opinion man” 😂
@@TheStoriesWeTell303 I hope it gives you a few good laughs. Just finished watching your most recent two videos on Timothy Treadwell and Chris McCandless and wanted to say they were fantastic. Thanks!

Sisyphus would be so ripped after lifting the rock
I loved it. Thank you.
love it! subscribed :)
I found you because I'm reading The Sympathizer at the moment. Just finished The Quiet American by Graham Greene, with some friends. Plenty of Camus. Plenty of questioning what people thought was happening around the time I received a Draft Notice for that war. [I declined the invitation.] You're spending your time in a good way, so say I.
Well done, kid. [I say kid because I'm probably half a century older than you.] Camus, then Mary, you found them and thought about them. [Love libraries.] I challenge you next to find a source for something I frequently say, that I'm pretty sure I didn't invent, but I can't figure out who said, or wrote, it before. My own Sisyphus hill, it's short: "With great wealth comes great power. With great power comes great insecurity. With great insecurity comes a great desire to control other people." Reading Frankenstein a long time ago [in de Nederlandse Taal], and then again, I think my little paragraph happened in my head around that time, as I tried to figure out - Why would a wealthy doctor or scientist do that? [Aside: I wear Hawaiian shirts too. In Florida, riding my bike a lot beachside.]
Well damn guess I need to rewatch Breaking Bad now

I have been wanting to explore anarchist ideologies better for a while now, and this video was a nice way to start accomplishing my goal! Additionally, I read Earthsea very many years ago (I was too young to even remember it well now), but I never let go of my love for Le Guin, and this video has shown me I was right not to! She seems like someone I could learn a lot from. Thanks for making this, I enjoyed it very much :)
I almost never comment on videos, no matter my thoughts, but I just really want to tell you or whoever’s reading this that I’ve been trying to understand Cammus ideas and the concept of the absurd for years. This video, is finally the one that I felt really broke through to me. I get it. I see it now, in my own life too. Thank you.
hell yeah, glad I could make it click!
