As always, extremely informative and professionally presented
His Scarlet suit is REALLY well fitted to his body! WOW!
What would the total cost per yard of the custom French fabric be, including all the samples over the two year project.
Can you explain the reason for the long length of the button holes in the John Blair coat made with French Fabric? Fashion or Function?
answered in video
Was the clothing maker liable for the fabric the client brings if they damage it ?
I am aware that men on average were shorter in the 18th century, but why are the sleves in the John Blair coat so short ?
Is it an optical illusion? You have large cuffs cutting the line of the arm, making it seem shorter combined with the length of the coat which also in comparison makes them seem shorter. It would go to around about mid thigh or maybe a little longer. I think the top of the cuff really tricks the eye. I'm not sure if it's a time when shirt sleeves were worn out and a slightly shorter arm could help display that. I'm no fashion historian, just an opinion!☺️
1740s coat sleeves were indeed shorter than full length, maybe "bracelet length", perhaps to prevent them from getting into food or other things, since they were so wide. And one could show off fine shirt linen and lace frills. Sleeves grew longer with time, reaching full length and even going over the wrist and half-way across the hand by the early 19th C.
