3 hours ago I took a Lyft across New York to get a rental car I booked online, and they told me at the counter I needed a credit card and not the debit card I gave them. I was so mad, I've wasted hours of my time. Dave, you are truly an American hero. They still haven't put debit cards quite on the same level however, in a big way - I called dollar and they told me if I'm using a debit card I have to book 24 hours in advance, and with a credit card I can get it whenever, so I couldn't get it. If there's a way you can mention that too.
Very dissatisfied with Dollar. I just tried to make a reservation at SGF Airport and was told there is a 500.00 fee to hold reservation not 200 for debit cards. I'm glad I called first. I also mentioned your name. What a Shocking Revelation.😮
Dave you’re slowly changing the world and improving so many lives ! A true inspiration 🙏 keep it up
Yes, if he can't change how banks and credit card companies work, change how other business work, make they prefer debit card users rather than credit card users, and it might urge people to get off the credit cards.

I love Dave's enthusiasm! This is major! I remember when I went to Dallas for a conference and had signed up with my DEBIT ard at one of the car dealerships and got there and was no longer able to get the car because they wanted a credit card. I was so tired and scared because I thought I would be stranded at the airport. Then I went over to Alamo and they accepted my debit card, so shout out to them. But this is fantastic news! Looking forward to using Dollar in the future! 🙏🏽👍🏽💁🏾♀️
DOLLAR CAR RENTAL NIGHTMARE!!
Flying in to Orlando to see my grandmother that is in a nursing home. I have not seen her in over a year!! I booked a car rental from Dollar car rental got a confirmation number, they also charged my card already. When I got to the airport to pick up the car no one was at the desk. A lady finally came out the back did not even look up my reservation and just told me they did not have any cars available. Pretty much told me she couldn’t help me and couldn’t do anything about it! I scrambled for over 2 1/2 hours to find a car. Finally I just gave up and took a Uber to the hotel. The next morning called DOLLAR CAR RENTAL and they were no help. Leaving me with no car to drive witch I need to drive an hour and a half to see my nana! This has been by far the worse experience with a car rental company. Dave Ramsey I love everything you do and appreciate all you do for people. I used Dollar car rental on your recommendation, do to not having a credit card. I’ve never used them before and with the service they’ve given me and how they literally laughed and left me scrambling to find a solution I will never recommend or use this company again.
I am an experienced Travel Agent who has often dealt with rental car companies. It is true that Dollar will accept a debit card, but you must have proof of round trip travel. You will also have an additional hold on your card of $200 on top of the rental cost. The issue is that almost every other car company offers the same thing. Budget is the exact same policy, however, if you do prepay, its only a $100 hold. Same with Avis. Enterprise and National are a bit harder since they still do credit checks. There is nothing new about this debit card policy in the industry, its been this way for almost 10 years now, with Dollar just recently jumping on board. And to make up for what they consider a risk, Dollar has increased their average rates. Bottom line is that Dollar was not the first, is not the best, and will end up costing you more. Disappointed to see an endorsement of a company that does not save anyone money.
Hopefully other companies follow dollar rent a car steps 🙏
Investing Hustler Why? It’s stupid
Dave just wanted to let you know that the Dollar rental company in Jacksonville FL airport told my wife that they did NOT rent using a debit card! Perhaps the memo was not sent out to them? The wife was stranded in the airport without transportation. The worst part was she was traveling the the provide urgent custodial care to her parents in their 80's!
Wow
Dave - We just looked into renting a car for a few weeks for a trip we're taking. Dollar LITERALLY is going to cost TWICE as much as Enterprise. (($1200 v. $600)). Sure, we wouldn't have the hassle of jumping through a million hoops to use debit...but we'd pay an extra $600! I'd rather jump through a dozen hoops!! You should MOST DEFINITELY talk to Dollar about their prices if you're going to advocate them to your followers!!!!
You did not use the coupon correctly.
If you carried one or two credit cards, you wouldn’t have to jump through any hoops, honey.
I pray I can help a fraction of the people Dave and his crew has helped. Thank you all of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Update 2/24/18
Trying to do business with dollar car rental, in a crunch for my grandmother's funeral. Having a hard time getting a guarantee on 2 car seats in a short notice. Having to rent from Enterprise because they can guarantee the carseats & they're taking my debit card. Sorry Dollar Car Rental I tried.
Don't use Advantage Rent A Car in Orlando. They charged me $850 for a chip in the windshield that was already there. I wish there was an agency that would investigate them. I notified the BBB and they have over 30 complaints in the past year that all went unanswered. They also have an F rating. BEWARE
I won't use Dollar, they left me stranded in Dallas Texas a few years ago. The car they rented me broke down, it wouldn't start, I tried calling the emergency number and nobody answered. I tried over, and over, and over, again and never got an answer. I had to leave the car at the hotel where I was staying and take the shuttle to the airport. All Dollar would do for me was refund 1 day of rental despite my not being able to use the car for 2 days. Never again.
Back in 2002 I was 25 just graduated the State Police Academy. I went to visit
Family on Cape Cod. I flew into Boston and went to the car rental Hertz and was denied and sent walking because I had a debit card. My credit union at the time said, “Sure, you can use this for car
rental.” Thanks!
Same. In February of 2002, my mother had a major heart attack, and I was 150 miles away. I couldn't take a government vehicle that far but could not go AT ALL because of my debit card. (No credit card)
There you go. Two more reasons to own a couple of credit cards and use them responsibly.
@@Blacktop_Rabinowitz i agree its basically a loaded gun
I just learned about you while I was looking for a car rental place that accepts debit cards. Yea, I'm really glad I'm not the only person who has this issue. I have not had a credit card for about 15 years, and my credit score is 800+.
One major reason you should use credit cards when renting is because pretty much all of them (except for Discover) come with rental car insurance, while debit cards don't. At least get a low limit credit card just for renting cars, otherwise you might end up owing Dollar 30 grand because of one wreck.
Before I stopped traveling for business, I had an Airline credit card. Numerous benefits and upgrades with my airfare, car rental, and hotel. My card was paid off automatically the following month.
Problem is due to theft. That debit cards do not do many checks on a person like a credit card does. Rental companies were protecting their assets. In Europe will be impossible to do a rental on any luxury car with a debit card.
Fast forward 4 years and things seem to have changed. I just reserved a car from dollar on line and the fine print says if booking with debit card, equifax credit check is required.
FINALLY. THANK YOU DAVE FOR OPENING PEOPLES EYES. My sister and I are debit card users and shes planning to make her trip out here to California but couldn't find a rental that just accepts debit cards. BUT YOU CAME ALONG like a fricken miracle and saved us from the stress. Thanks Dollar Rental. And a special thanks to Dave and his team.
Use TURO I rented a car at the age of 22 in California on vacation it was so blissful
Rented with Enterprise while my car was in the shop. Other person's insurance paid for and set it up. But they took my debit card for a deposit and they only charged me $1. No issue with using debit and they gave the $1 back when they got the car back.
Yeah I like enterprise they accept debit. I tried to rent from dollar there machines didn't work it kept locking my card by the bank spent 1 hour trying to rent from dollar so I went to enterprise fed up used their kiosks was in and out with a car in 15 mins.
Shouldn't have had to provide anything but ID in this situation. I had a situation where I was renting a car and it was being paid for by the other person's insurance. The rental rep tried to make me use a debit or credit card and I refused, then tried to deny me rental, so I got the person's insurance company on the line with the claim number and had them talk to the rep. No card needed at all.
Dollar requires credit card only. I was ripped off by them
LOL
Way to go Dave! I was about to get a credit card because I was having such a hard time with car rentals.
Los Santhon Dollar sucks
Just went to dollar and they didn't accept my debit card....
Rent with Turo it’s cheap and can use a debit card
Mike Arredondo age limit 25 = 🗑 trash
@@AnykindsMatthew2 Just gotta get older
@Corey R It doesn't. He has to get older.. Thats truth
I really love TURO too!!
@@isz9717Call: "hello yes lawyer? I want to sue someone from UA-cam.." 😂😂😂
Dollar is absolutely horrible. They backdoor you with a ton of fees. I’ve rented from every company and I can say that enterprise by far is the best. The price they quote you is the price it will cost. They take debit cards and give you back your 200-ish dollar deposit the day after you return the car
IT'S ABOUT TIME!! 👍👍👍
Very timely announcement. I rented from Dollar just a few days ago, and have been a Dollar Express member for years. Have rented from other companies on occasion but keep coming back to Dollar for their value and customer service. With this option simplifying life for debit card users, I'll be using Dollar exclusively now. Thanks Dave!
Hi there, J.M.! Our team would love to share your post about the Dollar Car Rental debit card policy update. If you’re on board, please email socialmedia@daveramsey.com so we can send you a quick form to sign. Thanks! - Dave’s Team
I just came back from Hertz Car Rental, they told me I couldn't pay with debit the same day I reserved, had to wait 24 hours and when I came back, they would do a soft pull on my credit and required a $500 deposit hold, if approved. I am not sure if Hertz still part of the same company though since this video is 4 years old.
Same here with dollar and hertz. Car rental is turning their backs on debit card holders. Bad.comlany policy. Which will lead them to go out of business in the future.
This is not true !! stop lying to people Dollar Rental Car does not accept debit card for rents. It is an update for 2020 they just refused me.
I will opt to use Dollar now! TEAM RAMSEY!!!
Just went to dollar and they didn't accept my debit card.
I worked for Enterprise rent a car for 12 years. We rented without a credit card all the way back in 1998. Fact. You could show two utility bills. Saw it daily at my branch. Worked at store #1530 in Chicago and 1517 in the suburbs. Old news here.
This is awesome. I can’t tell you how many times I couldn’t rent because I refuse to have a credit card. Thank you Dave!
Was it worth it?
Rented a truck from Enterprise in Surprise, AZ (from Baltimore MD) with my debt card, (had expired credit card on me & didn't realize it was expired cause I don't use it.) they said they had to put a $100. hold on it, which I agreed & got the rental truck for a week... this was my 1st time doing a rental with my debt card & not a credit card...
This is fantastic news! I am a frequent traveler (domestic and international), and we haven’t had a credit card in 4 years. I absolutely refuse to go back to credit cards just for car rentals. Thank you for changing the industry, Dave! As always happens in the free market, others will wake up and follow suit.
Dave Ramsey should have never endorsed Dollar Car Rental. It is just as much of a pain in the rear to rent a car through them as any other company. They still want to do a credit check when you rent the car, and they can't do it until you are at their location, and it is possible they will deny you. If you don't use credit cards and if you don't care about credit scores (like Dave Ramsey says you shouldn't), this could be a big problem.
Hertz refused to rent me a car for an important business trip a few months ago after I had previously returned two other vehicles to them. I talked to the district manager and reminded her she was a customer of my business and I would not be forgetting this. She said she didn't care. (A week later I checked my credit score and it was a 731 due to my mortgage)
Don't rent from Hertz!
You’re a traveling businessman who doesn’t own credit cards? Oh, dear.
Finally! I hate that a credit card is required to do almost everything. I really hope this is the beginning change of companies not making people go into debt to pay for stuff.
This is awesome. Keep going on rants, Dave! I love listening to your rants. I love it even more when it CHANGES people. Now it changed a huge corporation. I love it!! Thank you!!!
WHAT!?!? This is amazing. They have a new customer!!!!
hmm I've always used a debit card and I've rented a car from enterprise and avis
Enterprise won't let you rent a car out of state from the state you live in unless you have a credit card to put down on it. I've always rented from enterprise also but I've always rented from my local one and brought it back to them. 2 years ago our van broke down and we where stranded for several days until my dad could come and get us. We called to see about a rental car but they said no because we didn't have a credit card.
Yeezy when I worked, only local people could use a debit card, so proof of address was necessary- utility bill + drivers license
I wouldn't endorse them anymore. I just tried to rent a car and because I was a local in my state and I couldn't use a debit card at the airport. The only way I could do it was by putting another $500 down to be held till I get back. I asked if I could use two forms of ID To prove I had the money, they said no. So....
I'm chilling at the rental car. A hand full of ppl cant rent a car on debt card.
You always need a major credit card to rent dave.
Makes it easy to get in and out.
Now this family out here in los angels cant rent a car back to Texas
What happened
@@angelbasham6631 Enterprise rental in California only takes debt cards if you live in the state you renting .
Anyone rental a car out of state needs a MAJOR credit card
@@DanielGarcia-zz9eg alamo will. And they don’t charge out of state miles either
Why is it a problem for people to rent a card using a credit card? I get discounts AND automatic insurance tied to my own car insurance coverage, none of which I would receive with a debit card. WTF??
I rent Enterprise with debit, and never have problems. Just give them proof of your itinerary- incoming and outgoing tickets, motel reservations etc to show you are traveling then coming back. They will place a temp security hold on funds, usually rental amount plus 20%, then release the funds back to your account within a day. They will then charge your account for the rental amount after your done with the car. It's super simple. I always rent airport locations inside the US, so I can't be sure this will work with enterprise overseas
They didn't explain it to me this way
In the bay area in CA they won't accept a debit card if you're a local, only if you are flying in from a different location. Not everywhere Dave. Please help us out!!!!
J LUMINADO True
Congrats Dave Ramsey on changing markets and the way companies do business. What a way to use your influence for good!
Dollar took me for 3000$
That's it? No context?
Dollar Car Rental is Very expensive.
Enterprise does this too. Nice ad though.
AMAZING!
I was one affected 2 yrs ago..went on vacation...had a couple grand to spare..had a PERFECT vacation planned for my son and I. Went to ALL of them at the airport. noone would rent me a car. It was a sad moment. Had to change all plans. And I have a perfect driving record for 25 yrs..and a fulltime job for 12..and a citizen of 42 yrs. .noone cared.
I did get one because of that.
But this is great news to hear.
To be treated insufficient is the worst.
Thank you Dave, and thank you dollar...you and Hertz will be my only ones I use for now on.
Let the world compete with that. Equality😇❤ Perfect!
What’s wrong with using a credit card if you have the cash in your bank to pay the bill right away (before interest accrues)? I just don’t like using a debit card because of the risk of your account being hacked and the cash being stolen. You can’t really dispute the transaction like you can with the credit card.
If they'd just let you write a dang check, it would be even better. We the people have more legal protections with checks and EFT's than with debit cards.
Debit is cool. Accidentally smash the car and they can only keep the $200 deposit if there's only $200 on it lol
Thanks very much for enabling this to happen. Now our family knows where to go for car rentals when it comes to traveling in the US.
Dollar seems to be a terrible car rental company from all the reviews. No cars available alot times when you get there, waiting 1-2 hrs for Car, filthy cars, overbooking, and your reservation doesn't guarantee you a car either.
I rented a car from Boston to NYC airport when I had to fly out of the country. On the way back from overseas, I reserved a rental car at the NYC airport. To my surprise, not one of the rental companies at the airport would take my debit card. I don't have credit card. I didn't know to check in advance if they take debit card. Not only I was stranded at NYC airport, I felt so angry at how some of the counter people treated me when I felt helpless. I had few options. Either take another flight from NYC to Boston. This costed few hundred dollars. Take taxi from NYC to Boston. Who knew how much that costed. Or take those Chinese buses from Chinatown in NYC to Boston. I chose this since it would only cost me $25 one-way. I had to drag my two luggage around subways and walk a mile with them to Chinatown. Then take Boston subway and buses to where I live. I saved lot of money, but it was a huge hassle. I never forgave those auto rental companies in NYC airport.
Dollar Rental Car is saying on their website, when making reservations, you need to return it to the same location as you picked it up from (or close by / same state) I guess that is the down side to this deal. :(
I mean that’s not a down lol
Why going to all the troubles to rent a car? Just have one card or two for back up. That is just fine. Traveling overseas or possible trouble with a debit card you need to have a back up payment method to use if needed.
I SEARCHED UA-cam FOR THIS TOPIC 1 year AGO AND FELT HOPELESS FROM WHAT I HEARD FROM RAMSEY VIDEO THEN AND I SEARCHED AGAIN TODAY AND I CAN NOT BE HAPPIER ITS SO COOL TO HAVE SEEN THIS COME TOGETHER!
I just hope you drive better than you type!
They won’t take a visa or MasterCard “check card”? That’s visa/MasterCard, but it’s debit, not credit. I haven’t ever used a credit card to rent a car for personal use.
I never had an issue with cash or debit at AVIS or Budget. But I prepaid with deposit and had insurance and the deposit was to cover the deductable for the insurance incase I was at fault or didn't come back
I rented a car in Los Angeles last week through ACE, they take debit cards but there was a $400 deposit on top of all the other fees 🙄
Omg
Next time, avoid that hassle and use a credit card.
@DaveRamsey I just talked to Dollar in Dallas. They still wont rent a car without a credit card if you dont have airline travel arrangements. I can't rent a car for a week to take a trip with my wife.
I always use Alamo and havent needed a CC
Thank you!! I’m down. Going out of town in 2 weeks and now I know where to pickup a rental
In Dave's attempt to hold true to his rigid "no credit card" rule, he is advising people to pay an exorbitant amount more (to cover increased risk) to rent a car from his sponsor. Hmm...😐
And other company's have the same exact requirement to use a debit card. ☹
Turo used to be my only option About time this is on point!!! Hopefully others company's will follow this model.
U can use debit for turo ?
I signed up for this I live near Knoxville ... The airport is the only Dollar rental around ... got the Dave Ramsey membership go to go huh yeah right ... when you try to rent the car it says please read about this location so I did ...you have to go through a soft Credit Check !!!Really Dave ? What Hoax ! Waste of Time !
Just get some quality credit cards and stop listening to this shyster. You’ll be much better off.
DOLLAR CAR RENTAL is the biggest SCUMS ever.
Ramsay is totally wrong.. Rental CAR MUST NEEDS CREDIT CARD. DEBIT CARD is and always rejected or voided.
That's not true Enterprise rents with me a debit card
I found out if you rent a car at the airport you pay much more for the convenience of doing so!🙁$$$ and most will rent to you with a debit card.
Even though they take debit it's still pricey when you add everything up.
I got a reasonable deal through"Enterprise, this one wasn't located at the airport.😊👍
Do your homework price check early, check car rentals at the airport, and away from the airport before you settle for one.
It's about saving a few dollars.🤑👍
Having a credit card is not a bad thing. Not paying off the balance every month is.
Most people who follow Dave Ramsey are deadbeats who don’t pay their bills. Dave makes them feel better about this by convincing them that all lenders are mean anyway.
Didn’t hertz file bankruptcy ?
Hertz corporation will take your money with first class service. But when there is a issue they will ruin your life. It took a year to make it right. Hertzs is self insured and they have a company called ESIS to manage any accident related issues. They are not obligated to follow insurance laws. I had to call 6 times to get the case opened and more than a year to make everything right. take your business elsewhere.
I actually don't understand at all how it's any different to take one piece of plastic over another. Other than damage or theft maybe, but these companies have insurance for serious things like that.
Enterprise and Avis let you use a debit card. Only issue is when you try to rent from an airport rental car location.
I just joined Dollar Express Rewards! Thanks so much Dave Ramsey!!!
Kentucky Frey'd Fun What a joke
@@disneyfan9099 what???

They will charge you a gas fee even if you bring it back filled up.
They will also charge you a bunch of extra fees.
I can say I've never had an issue using a debt card and I've rented all over the U.S.
Same here. I didn't realize this was still an issue. I've never been questioned.
Same here. We rented in DC, in Hawaii, in Florida, in Seattle and more... never had a problem in a single place using a debit card. I'm always confused when people say they couldnt rent a car..
Same here, but then I found out it's because the guy was low-key creampieing my wife
@James Marquis if you don't mind me asking which companies and where at? I'm just curious as I used to travel for work and only used a debt card for the longest time. And that started in 2005.
theejmaenpaa Did your debit card have a credit card logo on it? If it has a Visa or MasterCard logo on it, then it is still a bank issued credit card tied to your bank account. A debit card without a Visa or MasterCard logo is what he is talking about.
I've always rented from Enterprise with my debit card with no problem.
I have used Enterprise with a debit card as well.
I have a credit card...with zero balance on it by the way. Yet I always rent cars with money orders and never had a problem. We get a rental car at least once a year for vacation and never had a problem.
They do Not accept a debt card at airport locations. And they run your credit to rent somewhere else.
I just started using your steps to change my money life! When I rent a car, Dollar is the way I will go! Thanks Dave.
Congrats Dave!
Sweet. ps can they make leaving the kids in the vault an option?
Hertz wouldn't rent to me in Atl with a Debit card and I had a return airline ticket. I was also a Hertz Gold Member and they denied me. Luckily I had a reservation with National Rental they accepted my Debit Card with my Emerald Membership
Great news. Anyone know about any international car rental companies that will accept debit cards?
They actually put a 500 dollars hold for people who have a debit card
I have a photo of their debit card policy and it negates everything Dave said. It’s a total lie
I've pretty much always used a debit card when renting.. At times it was hard to get credit cards.. Just use a debit card and they put like a $250 hold on the card.. Never was denied or anything tho
How does it work when they put on your card ?
After i heard this i canceled by hertz reservation immediately and booked with dollar! I hate using my credit card!
Hertz have one bankrupt now.
So I went to pick up a car at Dollar car rental and they did a $500 hold and did a credit check. I was turned away. 🤷🏻🤷🏻🤷🏻
Well do you have any others because there's a Dollar car rental company does not have a location anywhere near where I live in Kitchener Ontario Canada the closest is over an hour away?
Congratulations 🙏👊🏽👍🏽🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 Dave Ramsey. Thank you.
After watching Dave Ramsey show I decided to check out dollar a day car rental I will leave a comment after my expirence with them
Yeah, a little rant myself, After saving for a few months, i bought a new phone on cash and it took the website 4 days to process the f..ing payment. With credit card is always on time. Camon people, we are smarter than this!

I use enterprise rent a car a lot and they take my debit card but they put a $500 hold on my account...which is ok...I understand!!!...I am driving way with a $20k+ car....
How does this work
