Mick brought so much of a personal vibe, grounded, so much details, fit the slayer. I'm kinda sketchy about how the new music would feel, hopefully not too generic or bland.
Not going to lie, I never liked mick's industrial style for doom, I loved his metal tho 10/10, I honestly couldn't care less if they use a lawnmower or an electric toothbrush to make the samples of the song, as long as it sounds good it's fine
"hopefully not too generic or bland." That is all I can describe the music they've used in all the trailers so far. My expectations were met, this is what I expected with Marty Stratton taking the lead in effing with every contracted Composure under their belt so far.
The idea that they are holding back some absolute bangers and we shouldn't be quick to judge the generic metal-by-committee yawn fest we've heard so far makes me laugh. They KNOW music is going to be the first point of criticism. ID/Bethesda simply didn't understand what they had in Mick Gordon, or what percentage of their sales of Doom Eternal were pure hype for his music. TAG 1 & 2 were both net losses for the studio - maybe it was the difficulty, maybe a lack of marketing, or maybe a lack of new music for fans of Mick. They're going to figure it out for sure with this new game though, as it is going to be a lot more expensive to market without him.
Sure, but from what i heard so far in trailers it's mediocre for a Doom game. when i first saw the Doom 2016/ Eternal trailers i didn't need to play the game to know the soundtrack was good.
Same here. I felt like I got chills during the gameplay dive when the music hits as the armored Titan was rising from the depths. I’m gonna treat this music as its own rather than trying to compare to Mick’s, I feel like I just have a better understanding when I have that mindset. Either way, Hugo is not gonna let us down, we are in good hands. Can’t wait for the game.
I hope they use alternative instruments like how mick used chainsaws and stuff like that, I wanna hear medieval battle horns and swords clashing, I wanna hear some passion in it.
I hope they do, but with their discography... I think it's gonna be corporate music with an electric guitar and synths. I doubt they have the creativity to have the grit, creativity, and passion of Mick, Andrew, and David brought to the table.
Do I wish Mick Gordon was still writing the OST and Marty S. was out on his ass over how he screwed Mick over? Yes. Am I okay with a new group writing the music? If it's good, it's good - I'll take it... But I still want Marty out on his ass.
@@friendlyneighbourhoodmtb7961 Listen I’m trying my damn best to be reasonable and boycotting won’t do anything. The best thing Mick can do is a lawsuit but he’s moved on.
The only thing I'm worried about is the fact that there's a possibility that Finishing Move won't put love into this new soundtrack. But, by what I've heard so far, alone, there is definitely love.
I will be honest. Before criticizing new soundtrack, I wanna hear it. And what I have heard already, from all of them trailers and videos, is very impressive. But I can't wait to hear all of it. Sucks that in their recent reveal videos, id software didn't dedicated at least last half of the video to soundtrack, showing at least one track that we would give a listen to. It would have gave people a glimpse at what the new soundtrack is gonna be like. But yeah, I freed the space in my good old AIMP3 player for Doom The Dark Ages soundtrack and I can't wait to hear it.
@@novai6554 right, but giving people something to enjoy until the game comes out would be right idea. I mean, it's not like they gonna spoil whole game with one track.
Is the 6 string boring guitar impressive? Listen to atomic heart 3rd DLC teaser music - you will remember what Mick is capable of, they just lost all the atmosphere in TAG2 DLC, doom is unthinkable without good modern argent/Thall metal with supersaw synths
@@aimbot357 First of all, it might be boring for you but it doesn't mean that it will be boring for other people. Second, Mick didn't invented a new genre, he simply used what others did and made his name on it while working on the game. So saying that he made some kind of "argent" metal is like saying that you invented new milk, while there is nothing new about it. And third, I don't actually mind playing Doom with just simple 6 string guitar metal music on the background. So no, it is not boring. I never get tired of metal as a genre, no matter how it played. If it sounds heavy then I'm there for it.
@@deathcold_longplaysua4846 yes, you do really like game without atmosphere, do you? Put TAG2 music in the original game and listen. No battle flow, no atmosphere, it feels like just usual metal. Or better - Gladiator fight boss, just do it, compare. Mars Core without BFG10k? It won't be the same game. Music design is 40-50% of doom perception. And then go for 2016 doom where the soundtrack was actually finished. Not even close. One metal band - spawn of possession has only one song, people just don't listen to others because there are good ones and Magnum opus ”apparition". The same with the doom soundtrack. And have you listened to the atomic heart 3rd DLC teaser? Now imagine that kind of music in the dark ages trailer. It would explode, now from "wow, this looks good, I may play it" to "I AM PREORDERING NOW HOLY MOLY THIS IS ONE OF A HELL BATTLE FLOW"
the thing is, mick had a special flavor to his music which almost nobody (with the exception of andrew hulshult, david levy & geoffplaysguitar) can really match; finishing move's music sounds pretty metal, but it lacks a lot of flavor and feels much more "generic" as opposed to mick's masterful theming & individuality in his music (think of the music differences between Metal Hell & Cultist Base, and then look at their environmental designs)
There's way more people who are good in argent metal actually. Jupiter's music, Andy Strider and so much more. Markie Music was amazing as well. There are so many talented people around the internet and yet they choose the generic in-house studios for that. Bruh. Epic fail. I have no faith in them. But ye go take a listen to these I've mentioned, they're pretty cool
I’m gonna be honest I’m not in tune with rock or metal artist but at the end one the day you guys are just looking for something to complain about bro. The music DOES sound doom enough it’s not hard to have metal playing in the background there’s other metal music you could listen to while playing that’s better than the game soundtrack like cmon are yall 7 years old? It’s a lot of crying for no reason
if im to be fully honest, mick's synth-heavy style wouldn't really fit the grittier, heavier, raw-er feel and theme of the dark ages also it's been 2 years, both Mick and id have moved on, and i doubt that, even if they paid him, he'd come back to compose for the game
You're saying that as if Gordon isn't flexible in regards to his music. He composed more than just Doom, ya know. Wolfenstein, Killer Instinct and Prey have shown time and time again that the man has lots of variety. Hell, even Eternal has some out-there bangers like the metal choir chanting track that plays at the end of Hell on Earth (Stage 1).
That isn't true. 2016 had a grittier, heavier, and rawer soundtrack compared to Eternal. (Flesh and Metal, Harbinger, Rust Dust and Guts, Skullhacker etc) Which fit because 2016 was the grittier, heavier, and rawer game in general.
Mick shouldn't be paid to come back. Mick should be paid because they didn't pay him. Also if you think Mick couldn't pull off the Dark Ages you're tripping. He's an incredibly skilled musician that can play many instruments and he's created music for a ton of games besides Doom. He's not locked into making argent metal, he would've killed it without that approach too. Mick's talent is in intricate track design and his signature is complex layer work. None of these things are related to Doom 2016's style or even metal as a whole.
Mick is extremely flexible, just look at his killer instinct work He would have killed it but it is what it is. The new ost still sounds good, it's just sad we won't see mick's take on it.
Honestly they still need to pay Mick the full that he's owed, I do enjoyed what Andrew Hulshult did for the expansions. No doubt the soundtrack will be good nonetheless. I just don't want to see Marty Stratton's face seeing these promo videos. Hugo's fine.
I love Mick and still listing to Doom Eternals OST mainly during workouts, but I am open to this new crew and will judge it for what it is. They’re standing on the shoulders of a giant but they might pull it off. I really hope they do, but you’re right we simply don’t have enough information yet. This happens in one form or another in games, like Uematsu being the goat but stepping away for the later FFs, which for the most part all have bangers OSTs
It will never be the same again without Mick Gordon. Marty Stratton had one of the greatest metal composers for these games, and he ruined everything because of his narcissistic authoritarianism.
If id Software came out and said that the very same music heard in the gameplay reveal was composed by Mick, no one would bat an eye. In fact, I’d bet that people would sing the praises of Mick’s new direction for The Dark Ages. This is such a non-issue. Finishing Move’s music is great and people need to get over themselves.
Honestly, people need to get over it. As bad as what happened with Mick is, he doesn't own the IP and others deserve a shot at composing for it. Likewise, I'm not a fan of rejecting a product before it's even out because one aspect of it wasn't worked on by the same person, it feels disrespectful to all the people that worked on what's very obviously a passion project.
I would bat an eye. It sounds like a perfectly fine modern metal - the exact kind I can listen to in the background for hours on end. But Mick Gordon has turned in groundbreaking work time after time, consistently, and this does not sound like him.
@@opticalmoose8091 Bullshit. Mick is a varied musician and has the capacity to produce all kinds of music, and exploring different metal subgenres is apart of that variety. For Mick to step away from his traditional sound for DOOM so he can instead match the theming of The Dark Ages would be ‘groundbreaking’. So if id Software were to say this was Mick’s music, you genuinely wouldn’t know any better.
They should’ve gotten Bear McCreary to compose the score. He’s already got experience composing for games and respects the formula when making the music, on another note he is a metal head himself. He recently put out a metal album as a matter of fact. I just know he’d create a score that would respect and honor the work of Mick while bringing his own flair to the DOOM universe.
@@SamRabbit1256 Sure, but they did use the same combination of catchy melodic hooks over heavy guitar riffs. Am I wrong? So as a result, do you concede that it can be replicated by anyone else?
i was pretty surprised that they didn't bring back Hulshult or Levy at least. but it makes sense that they went with a normal company. i'd wager it was mandated by Microsoft/Bethesda to avoid the potential of more conflict with another solo artist. though honestly i do have the same fears of the music sounding "generic". obviously the synth-metal from eternal wouldn't fit, but none of the music from the trailers or the showcase blew me away the same way the doom eternal trailer soundtracks did (TOTFIY from the launch trailer, blood swamps from the TAG1 trailer, world spear/"portals" from the TAG2 trailer)
The people saying boycott the game because no Mick Gordon are the biggest boneheads i have seen online as a matter of fact the drama around this game is orchestrated by boneheads
You’re always gonna have those people that start saying a game is shit before it even comes out lol. Yes they are boneheads and major major pathetic sad people
I'd like to remind everyone, the people who are making the new OST made Follow in Flight, and Breaking the Covenant, from the Halo 2 Anniversary OST. If you listen to these songs, you will be excited to see what they do for the Doom OST.
There's nothing wrong with switching who composes or produces your music. It's not uncommon to switch from Contractor to Corporate because there's way less of a headache with deadlines and control. Micks really talented, but he's a contractor it's not like hes a part of the team, devs can choose whoever they like and as long as we the gamers like it, it's fine
What Bethesda did to mick is wrong but anyone that says Mick “made the new doom games what they are” are idiot tourists that have never played the games. What makes doom doom is its phenomenal gameplay.
@@stevenhammerle Exactly, and you can't have a harmony without at least two parts. If the gameplay was great, but the music was average/mediocre, then that would be the same as one singer singin ng perfectly on key with perfect timing and rhythm, and the other singer singing slightly off key, out of sync with the rhythm and the other singer. The singer who's singing well is still doing a good job, but the mediocre/average singer makes the overall composition worse
Not as crazy as it sounds! They essentially work with oscillators. The same bones as a synthesizer. It can create some fun sounds. There's a really good video on it by David Hilowitz called "this toothbrush is a synthesizer!" Granted, idk if David Levy used this method
Hiring a company rather than a person makes things much easier for the company hiring to change in the future. Makes total sense from a corporate perspective! Thank you for the video!
I'm really tired of people still crying about the Mick Gordon drama. It's about time people stop this bs. Mick moved on, ID moved on, how about everyone else doing the same?
Mick was an massive part of Doom, more than Marty is He is an artist who helped Doom come back to life And they treated like shit, used work they didn't paid for Is called empathy and wishing the game we like is made respecting it's workers
@@ccshinaberry I don't care The game sold millions And they didn't pay the guy who is more part of Doom's identity than Marty ever will be Everybody loves Doom's OST but apparently fuck the guy who made it, right ?
People forget that Mick didn't appear out of nowhere. He was picked by id Software, first and foremost. If the same person who picked Mick decides on who gets to compose for Dark Ages, then I'm cool with it. I personally do not want another Mick sounding OST. I want something new from someone else so that it sounds different. If people really want Mick for Dark Ages, then they can just mod it. Or, if they really want to support Mick, hire him and mod his tunes into the game. But, as talentless people will no doubt do, they will always revert back to critiquing the soundtrack using sentimental and abstract terms (the most egregious one is them using 'soul') rather than something other people can learn from. Critique is only useful when it translates into actionable feedback that aligns with the skills, techniques, and standards of the profession being critiqued.
I’m the biggest Mick fan - his soundtrack actually got me back into Doom. But two things can be true at the same time: Mick is one of a kind; AND the Dark Ages soundtrack kicks ass. Doesn’t have to be a zero sum game. What I heard in the trailer was yummy AF
I wanted Andrew Hulshult to continue what he did with the Ancient Gods Part 1 n 2, Blood Swamps FOR ME surpassed everything Mick Gordon did, no disrespect to the guy...
i hated the songs from doom 2016 it's just screeching sounds over the top of each over just awful so i am pleased Mick Gordon haven't got his hands in this new doom that was one of the reason why i hated doom 2016 even eternal music was bad
I kinda agree. While some of his tracks are absolute bangers, some of them were way too reliant on synthesizers for impact for my liking. Being a musician, I had thought that this was done in purpose to line up with the dark sci-fi of the setting. I hope they take on a more folk-orchestral approach and would use acoustic percussions this time around on account that Dark Ages is supposedly a medieval flavored sci-fi.
@@blackhand9581 agree having heavy metal track doesn't quite and the same impact to it setting Orchestral approach would be refreshing and fitting but i guess many gamers want that heaver metal track.
What hapend with Mick was unfortunate but Doom had great music befor him and with bouth Ancient Gods DLC´s i can say even after him. He did big mark on Doom and metal in games as whole but we have nothing to wory about as long as Hugo is in ID Doom will always be great and WILL (That is guaranted) have great soundrack plus all we heard so far TDA dose have banger sountrack.
Another thing I want to note as a guitarist is that it's absolute bullshit that the music is ''slower''. It's in fact physically more demanding to play from what I've heard (the combat soundtrack during the short gameplay showcase)
@@Allstin depends, in the video i heard one part where the downpicking also required a more chuggish sound and another part with less chug (i like chugging), but in general, music can be faster through alternate picking, but if you were to alternate pick some of the songs heard throughout the video, it would lose alot of it's heaviness
That guy saying mick shot him self in the foot with corporate deadlines is absolute heresy. He should read the receipts mick has released defending himself.
Id screwed up Doom with Eternals "Epic Dark Fantasy" direction imo. They added things because "Dude that's totally epic" without thinking how It'd effect the game's sense of world. Mick was a guy that would question the games world to find inspiration for its music. So "Hey Mick, can you do your magic on this level where blood ghosts attack you while you're riding a cybernetic demon toad" "Wait why are there blood ghosts and demon toads, isn't this a sci fi game? "Oh, this happens on the ancient swamps of gathanarix, its totally epic dude. Slayers there to get a ancient metal guitar that totally shreds through enemies." ...and now I don't give a shit about this games story or experience anymore.
As much as we all love Mick's godlike work for the previous two games, I feel like his argent metal style simply wouldn't fit this game as well as it did for the previous two games. Though I suppose we'll never know at this point.
I love mick gordon. But i feel like he did his thing for 2016, and thats fine. Eternal wasnt as in depth as 2016 as combat impacted 2016 while eternal was more just a background. All the doom games have had amazing soundtracks. And im positive dark ages will have its own sound. Im ALL for this. I dont want it to sound like 2016. If i wanted thaf ill go play it. If i wanted something epic. Ill do eternal. I want this new one to be atmospheric, gothic, dark, medievil. And i know id is gonna deliver.
The only reason they moved from Mick Gordon is their stupidity and their having been bought by Microsoft, which probably doesn’t favour individual talents and rather prefers the corporate mofos instead.
It’s not gonna be the same. And it wasn’t for the Ancient Gods either. Basically the producers are going to ask Finishing Move to do the “Mick Gordon”, because that’s what fans want, but it’s also the problem. It’s gonna sound like a less inspired copy of the original, with some new ideas for sure, but without Mick Gordon it wouldn’t exist.
You know, the new Unreal also doesn't have Michiel van den Bos. That's because there is no new Unreal. We should appreciate that Doom is still alive and well.
I want to give Finishing Move and Id the benefit of the doubt. The fact that Hugo took a moment to highlight the music in the demo was reassuring that the drama with Mick aside he understands there is an expectation of quality metal riffage from a Doom game. Sure there are a lot of games out there with high quality soundtracks that have become iconic, but it's rare for a developer to make a point of it in their demo spiel.
id knows music is a key part of DOOM, its been in the DNA since day 1, even. They know it’s something the fans truly love “we got a free game with this album!”
It's the PASSION that people are worried is gone. Mick displayed so much passion and love for what he made that it's hard to imagine some corp ever replicating it. Sure they're probably talented people and they'll do their best Mick Gordon impression, but we will absolutely feel the lack of passion in it and that directly translates to gameplay given how Doom plays and how the music is such a key aspect. Any attempts to shy away from that will come across as a diminished presence of the music and thus lack of faith in the composers. Which is basically what I expect ID to do in this iteration of doom. It's sad to see a post Mick doom world, but it was inevitable. Really it's more disappointing that ID can't just own it and go a different direction. Instead they're going to fully validate Mick's work by imitating it to the Nth degree.
I think you summed it all up well. It was a lot of crunch for everyone. I'm sure it was just a very intense time all around and the feeling was just take advantage of the success while it's still high. It was too much all around for anyone to be at their best. They're spreading out the work and keeping it in the past for now but I would really love to see the OST someday. Great vid, solid focus all around and I really love the editing of the new footage. Did not know about that call back in the trailer. So good.
Listen. I’m an artist of many different genres. Metal, classical/theatrical, r&b, rap (beats), pop, so on. I’ve dabbled in this type of music myself. Believe it or not, this “doom” music actually has a name it’s called argent metal. I can’t say I’m a master at making argent metal. But if you actually look for argent metal, you will find music that’s FAR better than mick (I’m not dissing mick at all). What I’m saying is, Mick carried argent metal (and pretty much made it what it is today). And Andrew is also a top dog. But when I say there’s better doom music out there… I feel like id should’ve just hired the lesser known artists that are and have already been making better and more “doom like” music. And I believe there could be some real talent behind this company finishing move. But I feel like id should take notes from these lesser known artists Edit: im not saying finishing move can’t do it. I’ve heard the trailer music. But hiring people that work for money versus hiring people that work for passion is a very VERY huge difference Edit edit: for reference I’d like to say my top 3 doom songs are 1. Rip and tear (I’m sure that’s the same for most others) 2. BFG division 3. Blood swamps…
Also with Chad still being at the helm it does make me more concerned. Because they had to rush out the Doom OST for the collectors edition, Chad was the one who mixed most of the songs for the release. And they were amature.
Mick Gordon got fucked over by Bethesda sadly, so as much as this music won't be God Tier, it's still got that real Doom feel and that's all that really matters.
I’m good with who is making the music I am moving on from the whole Mick Gordon situation I’m not interested in what happened 5 years ago I wasn’t there I can’t comment on it I’m just gonna move on and play the next to DOOM
9:20 Ok calling Mick Gordon similar to Pendulum is crazy, Pendulum isn't even rock. Yes Mick is for sure inspired by electronic music, but way moreso stuff like 16BIT, Broken Note, and Current Value than Pendulum..
All I've got to say is: Mick Gordon's era is GONE FOREVER. And I hope Mick NEVER COME BACK. I thank Id Software for the whole new soundtrack. It's much more METAL, heavy and brutal. It's precisely the kind of music DOOM always needed and if any of you guys here disagree I really don't care. It only prooves you know NOTHING about DOOM soundtracks. Mick Gordon's ''FEAR FACTORY'' wannabe guitar riffs has pissed me off for enough time and I'm tired of this shit. I say again: I HOPE MICK NEVER COME BACK TO DOOM.
Honestly, I think it should be judged based upon what Mick did, his music wasn’t just a soundtrack it was an integral part of the game and one of the reasons why doom was so great. I have a strong feeling that this will be the worst selling doom game of the recent trio
Both ID and Mick Gordon seem "happy" their relation ended, sadly mainstream media companies have no time for art and need things to be good and fast. Mick goes all for art even if it takes him time to perfect a formula, to a point where he basically invented and perfected a genre. Mick is better in a place where he actually gets the time and good treatment he deserves
I always thought that Marty Stratton wanted to be a gaming rock star in the eyes of gamers, but out of the blue he was eclipsed by the more charismatic composer that gamers came to associate with Doom in the first place. I think that it is for this reason that in the future we will not see a single bright person from the Doom developers, no matter what he does.
Mick is probably one of the most creative videogame composers out there, next to Masayoshi Soken of FFXIV/FFXVI fame, but unlike Soken and FFXIV/FFXVIs producer YoshiP, who have a good work relationship and are actually best friends, clearly Mick and Marty Stratton were not... but heres the thing... I think people forget Marty is part of the reason these games are so good He directed DOOM 2016, and has been an executive producer on Eternal and now The Dark Ages You dont get a good game out by being a bad producer Is he potentially a bit of an asshole? Sure, but people have a very "anti-Marty" vibe as if Mick cant be replaced... but again... he produced and directed DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal Thats not a small feat, you dont casually have a overviewing hand on the creation 2 of the best FPS games arguably EVER made, by being useless and unimportant to the project Obviously theres a love for Mick, by love of his work extends beyond DOOM, especially to Killer Instinct, but clearly Mick didnt want to become the "Bethesda composer", reminder that Mick not only composed DOOM 2016 and Eternal, but also Prey 2018, and both Wolfenstein New Order and New Colossus The guy likely felt too tied to Bethesda as a studio, and was fatigued or had too much going on Interesting fact however... Mick Gordon has worked with A LOT of people over the years, from Casey Edwards (Devil May Cry 5), and including working on Borderlands 3 which, guess what? Was composed by Finishing Move. Theyre not a random small company, theyre a big one and have been doing this for a long time, so i dont really expect anything bad at all
I will always say - if the end product is good, gamers SHOULD NOT CARE of how it was achieved. Should not care what id software did to Mick Gordon, or what Mick Gordon did to id software, how they screw him over, or how terrible of a dude he was, what they do to their other devs and how they treat them. All of this SHOULD NOT MATTER to customers. To all my care - they can whip their workers and then bathe them in salt. All i need to do, is pay for their game, and get good product. People who made Dragon age Veilguard and Concord licked eachother asses figuratively and literally, loved each other in every single way. And what we got? Did we got good games from it? We got two of the worst abominations of gaming industry. So yes. It does not matter what relationship goes inside of a company, all we need to care about is the end product. Person who made Bloodborne Cart - is a terrible trash person. Game is still amazing and super fun to play. So yes. Gamers should not care.
Why? Why does it need to be talked about? id delayed Eternal's release almost purely because Mick Gordon didn't finish the OST. Was becoming clear that the soundtrack was still not going to be completed by the new release date, they had to move on and get it completed regardless (mainly due to pre-order commitments and shareholder pressure). Mick essentially wanted the release delayed as long as it took for the soundtrack to be completed by him, which isn't/wasn't feasible. They both parted ways and that was the end of it. Mick Gordon is awesome, the 2016 OST gave birth to a new metal genre, his performance at the game awards doing the DooM Walk is incredible, but his eyes were a little too big for the plate with Eternal, and id/Bethesda/Zenimax had commitments that they had to honor. I'm still very upset about the whole situation and I wish that id and Mick Gordon could reconcile and him do another id property soundtrack (he'd be insane for Quake 6) but all parties involved would have to have a serious sit-down and mend or reconcile differences, which I'm not sure if Mick Gordon's mostly legitimate ego would knock down a couple notches to do.
i covered it very extensively when it came out, this video has a different purpose. that was just summarizing it into one word that people would know what i mean
Oh cmon! We all know who we really want. There’s really no discussion of who we want vs what we’re getting. It’s like a child wanting a tasty tasty cheesy burger🍔 but our parents give us blank slate yellow box cheerios. We take it because we have to. Because we know if we don’t eat we will suffer but it ain’t a Doomer’s first choice that’s for sure.
I'm not saying they can't make good music, but yeah Mick's music was transformative. IDC whose to blame someone needs to apologize and they patch the relationship up. Doom & Mick is PB&J.
Its going to be good. End of story. Doom Eternal had its unique arch metal style and now we get Doom the Dark Ages and its own unique ost. We like it. Its hype af.
About the ppl saying it's not gonna be memorable: Not all soundtracks aim to be earworms. Some intentionally just try to enhance the other aspects of the experience rather than stealing the show.
"Not all soundtracks have to be great, some just get the job done" Like???? You can have a soundtrack that is capable of enhancing the experience while also having it be memorable and great to listen to on it's own. This is just advocating for worse products.
The thing with the stuff Mick did (bone instrument etc.) is that if you don't know it it doesn't make a difference. It's flashy if you tell it to ppl, but it really doesn't make the music better if you don't know about it.
It can bring an organic mood that maybe you don't hear it , but somehow you feel it. Art is often full of that kind of thing, especially sound design and music.
From my understanding, Chad worked with Mick on Doom Eternal and took credit for a lot of Micks work even as far as tracks that he "rejected" that still made it into the game were credited to Chad. Now I may have Chad confused with someone else so please correct me if I'm wrong but having him in Doom: The Dark Ages honestly does not really impact my hope for the soundtrack in the slightest. I am very much 'Lets wait and see' on this one, but I still have hope its gonna be at the least 'pretty good'.
Hot take... I loved DOOM 2016 OST but for me ETERNAL sounded more of the same, sure there's a few tracks that are amazing but 85% of the tracks sounded like weaker versions of 2016.
Listen Mick is a genius, an icon in the gaming industry for his music and my favorite composer until the end of time , but come on we didn’t hear nothing from the team and besides they are four people as you said so the hope aaand the hype r there
its been 5 years and im tired of people talking about Mick, I love Mick and his work and i did see THAT side of the internet of people talkin shit on Andrew and David. I am super excited to see what they do and honestly they already have shown some memorable parts of their tracks, in the first trailer especially with their chainsaw.
No one can match mick. Sorry. He had a mastery that was unmatched. In particular, his sound design approach to synths and drums. His ability to make electronic focused aggressive tracks like Shotgun, vega core and mastermind has no parallel. Also, his abilty to create very memorable melodies over his djent chugs sets him apart over other metal acts.
I just hope the soundtrack is absolutely iconic like Mick's work. Like, Meathook and TOTTFIY are just so packed with flavour and uniqueness that I can only pray the new soundtrack will also make for itself.
While I liked Mick and his soundtracks, the music that I heard in the trailers are way more up my alley. Excited to hear the full thing. People just need to move on.
I’m sad Mick couldn’t come back but makes sense after what happened to mick😢. Still I hope the best for the ost coming. I’m hoping Finishing move can pull it off
Oh no, people are dunking on Finishing Move for being a team over a single guy? For shame. I for one am happy id hired a team and not just one guy this time. Hopefully it means they won't feel as crunched or overworked like Mick was in Eternal. (Hopefully they get their full payment too...) On the quality of the songs, I STILL have the first Dark Ages trailer music stuck in my head, and the developer direct played several songs that caught my attention, one in particular even sounded accurate to Mick's style (just 1:15 in). The soundtrack will be just fine. We've had Bobby Prince, Aubry Hodges, Mick Gordon, Levy & Hulshult, now it's the Finishing Move era. Mick's work is legendary and set the tone of New Doom, but there's been others before him and will be after him. I just wanna get my hands on some full Dark Ages songs!!
we just don’t have a lot to go off. but what we’ve heard is promising. the biggest concern is “will it be generic” mick did a djent style, but it worked for what he was going for
To be honest I’m sick of going back to all this.. give the new guys a chance… I doubt they’d have got the job if they weren’t capable. I know he was done dirty but leave it in the past. Mick has moved on so have ID
I will be the first here to say i was kinda let down when i first heard the riffs. It felt so generic Mick is obv the 🐐. Shame he got cucked full year. Andrew worked because he already made few fanmade doom soundtrack so he knew what to do Finishing move more like who???
Dark Ages trailer music sounds like early Firewind albums (I am the Anger/ Fire & The Fury tracks) That's more than enough for me. The only thing i want to know is - will they do proper metal soloing. Banging away 1/8ths or 1/16ths rhythm - it's not that hard. I can do that myself. I want more than that. I don't need Mick Gordon, i need Theodore Ziras meets Iron Maiden.
I think regardless of who makes it, the director has final say, AKA Hugo. Mick didn't write something and then say, this is how the game sounds Hugo, no requests. With it being a prequel, I am expecting more traditional heavy metal, opposed to the industrial future metal of 2016 + Eternal. But can we look forward to something, without worrying first. You think the Slayer worries?
I actually kinda hope it's a little different. It's a more medieval setting, and I want the music to reflect that. I absolutely love Micks work on 2016 with the crazy synths and chunky guitar riffs, but Doom 2016 was very Sci Fi heavy so that music fit that setting. I wanna see what this group can come up with this new setting.
The most metal thing for Mick to do would be to make his own soundtrack for The Dark Ages then have somebody mod it into the game. I was actually really upset about what happened to Mick. Watching the trailer with Marty at the forefront just upset me even more.
Depends entirely over whether they've got a bunch of hacks that are just trying to give us "Mick gordon at home". They should go for an entirely new style imo, metal middle ages. something more fitting with the theme
I am looking forward to hear it thats for sure.. Mick Gordon created something amazing and monsterous, especially with BFG Division where he basically made a boss theme, but with you as the boss..
This honestly might be the worst video I’ve seen all year.

Mick brought so much of a personal vibe, grounded, so much details, fit the slayer. I'm kinda sketchy about how the new music would feel, hopefully not too generic or bland.
Frankly im terrified because what weve heard so far in trailers is so mediocre. Im holding out hope anyway but honestly im doubting it.
I dont think they'd use a chainsaw for a song , they lack that creativity that mick has
Not going to lie, I never liked mick's industrial style for doom, I loved his metal tho 10/10, I honestly couldn't care less if they use a lawnmower or an electric toothbrush to make the samples of the song, as long as it sounds good it's fine

That is all I can describe the music they've used in all the trailers so far.

It’s a lot of crying for no reason
Nah honestly as long as they keep the iconic riff for the intro of the game I can die happy
that has to stay SOMEWHERE
preferably there!
@@SamSharp-o5i I will jump out of a window is this happened
if im to be fully honest, mick's synth-heavy style wouldn't really fit the grittier, heavier, raw-er feel and theme of the dark ages
also it's been 2 years, both Mick and id have moved on, and i doubt that, even if they paid him, he'd come back to compose for the game
Well, yeah, they were terrible to work with and slandered his name for no real reason so can you blame him for avoiding them
That isn't true. 2016 had a grittier, heavier, and rawer soundtrack compared to Eternal. (Flesh and Metal, Harbinger, Rust Dust and Guts, Skullhacker etc)
Which fit because 2016 was the grittier, heavier, and rawer game in general.
Mick is extremely flexible, just look at his killer instinct work
He would have killed it but it is what it is.
I miss mick Gordon’s theme in the new music. I NEED ROUGHER GRITTY CHAINSAW RAH
If id Software came out and said that the very same music heard in the gameplay reveal was composed by Mick, no one would bat an eye. In fact, I’d bet that people would sing the praises of Mick’s new direction for The Dark Ages. This is such a non-issue. Finishing Move’s music is great and people need to get over themselves.
now this is a perspective i haven’t seen before!
Bingo
I would bat an eye.
It sounds like a perfectly fine modern metal - the exact kind I can listen to in the background for hours on end. But Mick Gordon has turned in groundbreaking work time after time, consistently, and this does not sound like him.
@@opticalmoose8091
Bullshit.
Micks melodic and catchy sounds while being heavy at the same time cannot be replicated by anyone else, have to accept that.
Except David and Andrew replicated that exact sound for The Ancient Gods. Melodic synths over heavy guitar riffs is pretty common

@@stevenhammerle Exactly, and you can't have a harmony without at least two parts.

Another thing I want to note as a guitarist is that it's absolute bullshit that the music is ''slower''. It's in fact physically more demanding to play from what I've heard (the combat soundtrack during the short gameplay showcase)
i wouldn’t say physically more demanding, it should be ok overall to play
@@Allstin depends, in the video i heard one part where the downpicking also required a more chuggish sound and another part with less chug (i like chugging), but in general, music can be faster through alternate picking, but if you were to alternate pick some of the songs heard throughout the video, it would lose alot of it's heaviness

Id screwed up Doom with Eternals "Epic Dark Fantasy" direction imo.
They added things because "Dude that's totally epic" without thinking how It'd effect the game's sense of world.

So "Hey Mick, can you do your magic on this level where blood ghosts attack you while you're riding a cybernetic demon toad"
"Wait why are there blood ghosts and demon toads, isn't this a sci fi game?
"Oh, this happens on the ancient swamps of gathanarix, its totally epic dude. Slayers there to get a ancient metal guitar that totally shreds through enemies."

Shoutout to Geoffplaysguitar for giving us Fall of Davoth, was hoping to see more of him/david/andrew together.
We should appreciate that Doom is still alive and well.
no doubt! i grew up with the series and it’s still alive today.
mick brought an evil angel to himself, bad shit happens for what he did.
They know it’s something the fans truly love “we got a free game with this album!”
you can say whatever you want, but Doom with Mick's music is still way better than without, i mean we all experience that in Eternal
As long as it's epic, hard, heavy and memorable i dont care who made it.
All i care about is a great experience playing the game.

But I feel like id should take notes from these lesser known artists
Edit: im not saying finishing move can’t do it. I’ve heard the trailer music. But hiring people that work for money versus hiring people that work for passion is a very VERY huge difference
Edit edit: for reference I’d like to say my top 3 doom songs are
1. Rip and tear (I’m sure that’s the same for most others)
2. BFG division
I’m good with who is making the music I am moving on from the whole Mick Gordon situation I’m not interested in what happened 5 years ago I wasn’t there I can’t comment on it I’m just gonna move on and play the next to DOOM
you're stupid got it.
I think people forget Marty is part of the reason these games are so good
He directed DOOM 2016, and has been an executive producer on Eternal and now The Dark Ages
You dont get a good game out by being a bad producer
Is he potentially a bit of an asshole? Sure, but people have a very "anti-Marty" vibe as if Mick cant be replaced... but again... he produced and directed DOOM 2016 and DOOM Eternal
Thats not a small feat, you dont casually have a overviewing hand on the creation 2 of the best FPS games arguably EVER made, by being useless and unimportant to the project
Obviously theres a love for Mick, by love of his work extends beyond DOOM, especially to Killer Instinct, but clearly Mick didnt want to become the "Bethesda composer", reminder that Mick not only composed DOOM 2016 and Eternal, but also Prey 2018, and both Wolfenstein New Order and New Colossus
The guy likely felt too tied to Bethesda as a studio, and was fatigued or had too much going on
Interesting fact however...
Thank you for your incredibly compassionate response. I agree, products feel like they're much better when the people behind them are miserable.
"Drama" is one way to completely trivialize the bullshit and slander Marty put Mick through.
i covered it very extensively when it came out, this video has a different purpose. that was just summarizing it into one word that people would know what i mean
Seriously, it’s ok for other people to do music for Doom. It’s allowed.
"Not all soundtracks have to be great, some just get the job done"
Like????
Terrible take
All I'm saying. No one is as talented as Mick. They can try to make cool stuff.. But what made the new Doom games DOOM, was Mick
Listen Mick is a genius, an icon in the gaming industry for his music and my favorite composer until the end of time , but come on we didn’t hear nothing from the team and besides they are four people as you said so the hope aaand the hype r there
i’m curious to hear more about
its been 5 years and im tired of people talking about Mick, I love Mick and his work and i did see THAT side of the internet of people talkin shit on Andrew and David.
6:43 I was literally doing the dishes 🤣
I'll remember this!
Check the next video when it comes out
I wonder if lore-wise, this is the first game where Doomguy learns to JUMP? :D :D
I just hope the soundtrack is absolutely iconic like Mick's work. Like, Meathook and TOTTFIY are just so packed with flavour and uniqueness that I can only pray the new soundtrack will also make for itself.
Come tell us how ya feel in our Discord, i’m active there! discord.gg/QccafdjkUw
(Hopefully they get their full payment too...)
On the quality of the songs, I STILL have the first Dark Ages trailer music stuck in my head, and the developer direct played several songs that caught my attention, one in particular even sounded accurate to Mick's style (just 1:15 in). The soundtrack will be just fine. We've had Bobby Prince, Aubry Hodges, Mick Gordon, Levy & Hulshult, now it's the Finishing Move era. Mick's work is legendary and set the tone of New Doom, but there's been others before him and will be after him. I just wanna get my hands on some full Dark Ages songs!!
we just don’t have a lot to go off. but what we’ve heard is promising. the biggest concern is “will it be generic”
mick did a djent style, but it worked for what he was going for
To be honest I’m sick of going back to all this.. give the new guys a chance… I doubt they’d have got the job if they weren’t capable. I know he was done dirty but leave it in the past. Mick has moved on so have ID
i’m giving them a chance for sure. we haven’t heard enough for a full judgement. plus classic doom references in the music are always welcome!
We need to lower our expectations. It won't be Mick's level quality metal but it will be fine I'm sure.
"Will doom have a new metal choir ?"
That already exists, Argent Metal
I will be the first here to say i was kinda let down when i first heard the riffs. It felt so generic
Mick is obv the 🐐. Shame he got cucked full year.
Andrew worked because he already made few fanmade doom soundtrack so he knew what to do
Finishing move more like who???
Dark Ages trailer music sounds like early Firewind albums (I am the Anger/ Fire & The Fury tracks)
That's more than enough for me.
I’m sure the game it’s gonna be great…but the experience it’s not going to be the same without Mick Gordon music and sensitivity.
The most metal thing for Mick to do would be to make his own soundtrack for The Dark Ages then have somebody mod it into the game.
I was actually really upset about what happened to Mick. Watching the trailer with Marty at the forefront just upset me even more.
My favourite flavour was probably david levy. His take of the ost was incredible
🖤
@@davidlevymusic The OST in the Atlantica level was so good...
@ you absolute goat
@@davidlevymusic the man himself
@ Thanks brother!
Doom 2016 is still the best in terms of atmosphere and soundtrack. Doom Eternal had improved gameplay but lost a huge chunk of its predacessors vibe.
