      I have about 2 dozen baby hosta now on the back porch in pots. They are from the seeds I am planting in this video. Also remember that if you are collected your own seed not all seed will be viable.

    The little round black part that's the seat the little green stem coming up is the hosta so when you plant it in their own little pot you put the little black seed into the dirt how far down

      Usually I have some leaves in 60 days. If you have them in like a 4 inch pot let them root out completely and then transplant

    Hello,
    I planted a number of seeds in February & April in small pots, and probably have 30 hostas about 2-3 inches tall. It's November in Massachusetts and the hosta plant outside I took the seeds from is now completely yellow due to the change in seasons and it will come back next year. However, now about half of the seedlings I have inside are turning yellow too.
    My question is what happens to the seedlings over the winter? Are these expected to turn yellow, fade, then come back next year? Should I continue watering lightly over the winter?
    Thank you,

      I am in the exact place you are with some hosta seedlings that I have going on the back porch. They are 2-3 inches tall and starting to yellow because of less sunlight per day and cooler temps. I would lightly water over the winter but do not keep constantly saturated. Water until you reach saturation and let the pot completely dry out before you water again. Also, keep in mind when we collect seeds from hosta the progeny will have a HUGE genetic variance. Hence why there are so many hosta cultivars. Some of our seedlings may never get larger than a few inches tall and a few may die out all together. You might also be sitting on the next Humpback Whale or Empress Wu that could get 6ft across and live for decades.

    Hello if I plant Hosta seeds around a tree now will they bloom this year? Also would it be better to start with your method and transfer after bloom starts I live in Illinois if that helps

    • @Dr.Warren
      @Dr.Warren  Рік тому +1

      Definitely no flowers this year. Start in a pot so it can develop roots without competition from the tree.

      Soil rich in organic matter and well drained. Part shade to full shade. Avoid full sun in the afternoon.

    I would like to cut the flowers from my hostas so as to have more plants. Are there steps to do this?

    • @Dr.Warren
      @Dr.Warren  11 місяців тому +1

      I literally just cut the spent flowers off my hostas yesterday that didn't form seed heads. If you are wanting the seed from the flowers wait until the seed pods turn brown and or begin to open up. Then collect them for seed.

    I ordered hosta seed. They are extremely small seed. The instructions were 1. Fill seeds in warm water for 24hrs. 2. Fill seeds in cold water for 72 hrs. 3. Put seeds in wet soil for 1.5cm with plastic 4. Seeds will sprout in one month. I am trying to understand these instructions. The seeds are labeled bonsai 200 pcs. Seeds mixed hosta bonsai jardin perennials lily flower pot bonsai white lace diy home garden ground cover garden plant/sku 200-hosta-j27-a-a, I order 3 different kinds total. 2nd one was j27-c-c and 3rd one j27-p-p. The picture was A red hosta and a white one and a variegated red. They were so unusual in color I thought I would try it. Now I think I am over my head. I live in Boaz and could bring you some of these seeds if you would like.

      @@lindaleesmithbryson6932 what I was afraid of. To my knowledge there is no such thing as red variegated hosta. I've seen Amazon ads for blue Japanese maple, red hosta, you name it. It's a scam. This is also how some invasive species have been introduced to the United States. The seeds are not true to name and whatever is in the package grows and then seeds. Next thing you know they are growing everywhere.
      I'm not saying this is what happened for sure to you but it doesn't look promising for your red hostas.

      @@lindaleesmithbryson6932 don't plant them outside. If you wanted to start them in a container and verify it is what you ordered once it grew it would be ok. But if you plant them in the yard there is no telling what you might get. The USDA and customs is trying to crack down on this type of thing.
