At work we just tow a piece of chain link fence behind the asphalt roller with a bunch of bricks on top the mesh. You then drive around rolling/scratching while your rake men are happily grading behind you. I have a pictures of us doing this and it's pretty funny how well it works. I also recalled we used a piece of wood (off a pallet) at the front of the fence so it helped hold shape.
Awesome video. thanks! I bought one because of this. Few questions though... Which way do you spin the drum? With the bottom of the drum kicking the dirt in the direction you're driving or towards the machine? And if the drum kicks material forward, then what do you do with those piles at the end of each pass?
So I am getting ready to redo my backyard with about 20-30 yards of filtered top. Should I spread the top first and then rake or rake up the spots that I’m doing then lay the top and rake again? If that makes sense
Good Video and great info !!! The Harley Rake is not a cheap piece of equipment, and there is nothing I know of that is better for lawn prep work !!!!!
Thanks for the tips man on working forward and criss crossing. I have Bobcat's T300's at 21.2 gpm and I'd like to get a Harley Rake. What size works best you think? 60", 72"...manual, fixed or hydraulic angle? Really appreciate your thoughts.
You do great work, .What is you thought about the Command Series SR3 in comparison to the Harley Rake?I was going to purchase a Harley Rake instead of renting each time, then I came across the SR3 Thanks in advanceTom
+Tom Cometlandscaping Thanks for watching! Ive never tried the SR3. It does look like a neat tool. Doesnt look like it can do as much as the harley rake though. Like smoothing out gravel driveways.
Good video but I disagree on the reverese. I go forward to level and and get the crap out and reveres to prep for seed bed and still hand rake. Just the way I do it not saying its better just how I was taught on it.
Interested in getting a harley rake for 3 point attach. already have the tractor. Can you do a video with the Harley rake on rocky soil and existing grass? I would like to know if and how it would work to prepare soil for Hydroseeding. An option for customers to prep ground without importing topsoil (very expensive).
Did you use the Harley rake before you spread the good topsoil on the ground before leveling the grade for the property. Did you go down 6 to/8 in or 4 to 6 " cleaning the topsoil properly creates a beautiful growth platform the deeper you go the longer you have to let it sit so that it settles
Best power rake video I've seen so far. Question I have is this. How would you rake perpendicular along a newly installed in ground swimming pool? I'm trying to avoid a retaining wall since it's not a steep slope and plan to regrade next to the length of the pool. The slope goes up about 12-15 inches for about 10 ft then levels off for about 20 ft to the property line. Can I use a power rake to create one nice smaller slope from property line to the edge of the pool decking? Or do I need a skid steer to do most of the moving?
Can you use a Harley rake to restore parts of a lawn instead of bringing in new soil? Spotty front yard was initially going to top dress with new loam or compost then seed
Great video. Please can you explain what you meant by your comment that the rake was always doing a wheelie with a wheeled machine? Was that a wheeled skid steer or a tractor? I have ordered an 8 foot rake for a 50hp tractor, mainly I have large fields but will have some yard work to do. Perhaps you meant that with a tractor the 3 point is light and the rake lifts itself up when it hits hard ground, but maybe I could add iron weights to the 3 point to stop the rake lifting up. I like the idea of using a tractor going froward as that way the rake removes the tractor wheel marks.
Given CTLs are the idea machine, any idea whether the longer wheelbase skiddys do a better job of keeping the front end on the ground when working with a harley rake?
I noticed that Edge has a power rake that does not have a chain drive. It has hydraulic motors on both sides of the drum. Do you think that is a better design or does it really matter?
I think that is a much worse design. That drum is in the dirt all day. Do you want a hydraulic motor in the dirt all day as well? I like this rake because it keeps the important expensive parts out of harms way. Id rather replace the chain every 8 years rather than the hydraulic motor.
Another opinion..I've run hydraulic motors on a lot of different machines which were exposed to pretty extreme conditions - rock crushers, combines and various other ag equipment, lots of construction equipment, etc. Problems I've seen have mostly to do with internal failure or taking a direct hit from something much bigger. Internal pressures tend to hold contamination at bay, and timely maintenance (especially filters) take care of what does enter the system, which happens more from poor practices adding fluid than dirt entering through lines and housings. I very much agree with keeping power units clear of harsh conditions, tho, and it's more than possible that dirt could enter the system through the drive/drum interface. Disclaimer - I own a Bobcat soil conditioner running on my A300, which does utilize a hydraulic motor on the drum. I chose that unit because of the compatibility with my 7-pin connector, but also because of the hydraulic drive.
would this be big enough to level out 5 acres. currently being farmed and it'll be very level and chopped up. but I'm looking to make it very smooth for a zero turn mower.
I have one of those glenmacs but its not on a big loader, it doesn't have a float feature. I have it on a Vermeer S800TX mini skid steer. I always run it backwards. I will try it going forward. Thanks for the video
what direction do you spin the drum? ive seen both ways same way your traveling or opposite? do u kick material out in front of you, or have it spin the dirt underneath machine
For a do-it-yourselfer, would I be able to use a Harley Rake to completely till up about 6" of topsoil to move it for bringing in limestone for parking and prep for asphalt
The machine I have is a NH L175. It's a 2006 and according to the manufacturer it doesn't have a float mode.(we bought it used and it didn't come with a manual). Will this attachment still work properly with out being used in float mode??
do you have hand or foot controls? with either control, just move the pedal or hand control that lowers the boom and mash it harder and it should move further into float mode.
As usual, great job! I have wheeled machine. So my implement of choice is the Rock Hound. I use it in reverse. Do you ever use one? If so, is there a video?
Great video, i'm going to rent one of these for next weekend. Should I be running at 3/4 - wide open throttle for this attachment or is 1/2 throttle fine
Okay soo what if you have a wheeled loader and you use one of these/ Is it not very effective? We actually just bought one to do private gravel driveways because people have asked us.
No it still works just fine. We used to use ours on a wheeled machine before we got a track machine. I have just found that it works a lot better and you don't have to go over areas as much with a track machine. It will work just fine for driveways with your machine, don't worry!
it has been almost 4 years since this was published, i wonder if the ninja still thinks that reverse is a bad idea, along with always running it in float mode. I imagine as his skills progressed he might have a different thoughts now.
Awesome! Can the Harley Rake be used to bust up rock...and I mean a solid bed or rock? Not 2b gravel that was dumped/compacted during home construction, I'm talking about 100% solid rock from the hand of God Himself.
Thank you for the tutorial, absolutely informative.i just used the power rake for the first time today.
Good looking topsoil, great commentary, love the rake attachment!

Man I learned quite a bit from the dirt Ninja Harley rake AKA power raking pretty cool learned a lot thanks
would love to see a short segment using this on an area with grass and weeds on it. thanks

Great video man, I might have to talk my boss into getting one of these for the sod farm
Thanks! Glad you liked it. Its a great tool.
7 years ago. Vintage!!!!! 😝👍🏼
I would like to adopt this in my landscaping practice. Do you have a recommendation on a skid steer and Harley rake to acquire?
So I am getting ready to redo my backyard with about 20-30 yards of filtered top. Should I spread the top first and then rake or rake up the spots that I’m doing then lay the top and rake again? If that makes sense
Did you remove the original lawn material completely or just scalp it and loam over it?
Good Video and great info !!! The Harley Rake is not a cheap piece of equipment, and there is nothing I know of that is better for lawn prep work !!!!!
Thank you!
Great content and video! Liked and Subscribed..... Love the attachment!

Great video
The track V:S wheeled machine is good to know, these are the little details that become big details fast.....
Yes, big difference in performance of the harley rake
Thanks for all the great videos truout the years
What an incredibly useful tool. Good tips!
I live in New England is this what you would use to clear a yard with weeds etc.?
Great video! you have a super valuable experience and knowlage . Thank you for sharing!
+Turning Green,LLC Thanks for watching!

Seaside Landscaping yeah, I go backwards depending on what I'm doing.
Grade going forward, only reverse to make it pretty
I'm trying to find a way to remove tons of fist-size rocks from my lot. Can a Harley rake do that?
What advise would you give someone wanting to start a business like this.
Keep on schedule with customers and communication. So many contractors are horrible at business and customer service
Very cool. Thank you.
If the bearings on the tires keep popping out is that due to pressing down too much
Doing the same thing in my front yard later today....thanks!

I ended up needing a retaining wall about 2 ft high. Rented a walk behind power rake to finish some grading before laying sod and it worked well.

excellent show & tell

I'm not sure but I think he meant that when he lowered the rake, it would pick up the front tires of a wheeled skid.
Given CTLs are the idea machine, any idea whether the longer wheelbase skiddys do a better job of keeping the front end on the ground when working with a harley rake?

give me a tooth bucket... and a beer.. then sign my cheque end of day, see you in am 🤣
I have one of those glenmacs but its not on a big loader, it doesn't have a float feature. I have it on a Vermeer S800TX mini skid steer. I always run it backwards. I will try it going forward. Thanks for the video
Have your tried forward? If so what's your experience and preference.
what direction do you spin the drum? ive seen both ways same way your traveling or opposite? do u kick material out in front of you, or have it spin the dirt underneath machine
it looked like your harley rake has a floating hitch. do you ever use that function? just curious as to how and when you would use that.
For a do-it-yourselfer, would I be able to use a Harley Rake to completely till up about 6" of topsoil to move it for bringing in limestone for parking and prep for asphalt
No.
Good video
6:36 if you want to skip to where he starts actually doing it
Great job on how to use a Harley rake. What is the minimum amount of top or loam you recommend for a good grass base yard?
4in minimum. 6in is good. if you have an irrigation system you can get away with much less, but I don't recommend it
Ok thanks!
Nice work

DimmerMan13 Yes it will. You will just have to go slower and make the adjustments manually. If your machine is a 2006 it should have float.
do you have hand or foot controls? with either control, just move the pedal or hand control that lowers the boom and mash it harder and it should move further into float mode.
Well done
I'm getting set to buy one, I know the wheel are cheaper to purchase than the tracks, which would you say is a better all around option.
You mentioned that power rake attachment works better on tracked machines, but what if it were hooked up on a Ventrac machine?
what's up ninja, would you be able to make a video of how to set the float mode in a Komatsu loader please? thanks in advance.
At what speed slower the better
Use my Harley rake and tow some 12 foot harrows behind, perfect on big areas.
Thanks brother
As usual, great job! I have wheeled machine. So my implement of choice is the Rock Hound. I use it in reverse. Do you ever use one? If so, is there a video?
Thanks! We used to have one. We got rid of it when we got the harley rake.
Excellent
Great video, i'm going to rent one of these for next weekend. Should I be running at 3/4 - wide open throttle for this attachment or is 1/2 throttle fine
Wide open. You want maximum hydraulic output to this attachment.
Thanks for the video, good stuff
Thanks for watching!
Do you remember how much loam you used (in yards or tons)?
What is loam? I've ask a couple of our soil suppliers and each have a different opinion. If they know at all.
Perfectleaf1975 screened top soil for lawns
It's a type of soil that's a mix of clay and sand
are those rakes super loud? I see people wearing ear protection ear muffs even with an enclosed cab.
+Lsatq they can be if there are a lot of rocks
Okay soo what if you have a wheeled loader and you use one of these/ Is it not very effective? We actually just bought one to do private gravel driveways because people have asked us.

Will it chew up hard packed dirt or prairie?
Thing chews up everything...........z
@@zardiw doubt it chews that good hard clay lol
starts at 6:40 .. you're welcome (blah blah blah)
Just FYI - a '96 Case 1840 has no "float" feature... it's all on the operator
PS: I like the video though... everything else sounded on the money
you know your stuff
Hello Dirt Ninja, can the Harley rake be used to top dress/spread new dirt into an existing lawn? Or am I asking for disaster?
+bcflys It will work just fine. You will want to spread the pile out first. Make a bunch of little piles and then run over it with the harley rake.
Ok Cool! Thank you Dirt Ninja
seems like all my company does is pulling weeds this is grate
hay boctat nija you should get a ventrack it would be so good for you guys go check it oat
How well does this work on an uneven surface?
If you want to smooth that surface out, it should do nicely
Do some arguer stuff on ur wicked excav
what happens if you have a big dip bigger than your harley rake? Back fill it?
it has been almost 4 years since this was published, i wonder if the ninja still thinks that reverse is a bad idea, along with always running it in float mode. I imagine as his skills progressed he might have a different thoughts now.
In the more recent videos he still does it this way from what i can see.
not all of us are ninja experts i suppose....
Try going backwards save you a ton of time
use a hammer and then change it to a bucket
Awesome! Can the Harley Rake be used to bust up rock...and I mean a solid bed or rock? Not 2b gravel that was dumped/compacted during home construction, I'm talking about 100% solid rock from the hand of God Himself.
No it would not work at all for that
2ridered2 dude, seriously?
no rocks no reason to hand rake. Drag some chain link fence behind mower if you worried bout track marks. seed b4 if u after grass
No, every skid steer does not have a float option
I dont think my 85 Toyota 2sdk6 has any float option xD
I think he said "I'm gonna show you how" 47 times.
Loam wth gotta be a yankee.its topsoil
REPECTFULLY, I DISAGREE WITH MOST THINGS YOU ARE SAYING. WHEELS, FORWARD, BACKWARD , ETC HUH???
Who the heck says loam
all the derp with none of the demo >
Good video
