Welcome to Band-Maid! The best hard rock band I have heard in my 58 years on this planet. They don't stick to any one genre and often mix genres in songs. They are extremely diverse and have an extensive back catalogue featuring Punk, Pop-Punk, Hard-Rock, Classic Rock, Metal, Prog, Blues, Jazz, Groove, Rap etc. From face melting 220 bpm punk-prog to ballads, instrumentals to acoustics they do it all. They are also five of the nicest people in music, without a shred of ego. They are funny and fun and bad-ass musicians to boot. They are currently into their 11th year with the original line up.
Btw, Miku the rhythm guitarist (red rose) formed the band. She had the idea of Band-Maid after working as a maid in Japanese maid cafe's. The idea is a concept called "The Gap" - that is what you see (cute maids) is NOT what you get (Hard Rock/Punk/Metal). They take the maid café concept literally. They call their concerts "servings" and their fans "Masters and Princesses". Oh, and Miku is an 810 year old small pigeon. Welcome to the pigeon hole Po!
Okay, names, pronunciation, nicknames, and roles, in order that they joined the band.
Miku Kobato - mee-koo - Kuruppo, the Little Pigeon, the Little Engine Who Will - band founder, backing (and occasionally lead) vocals, rhythm guitar, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon and PR machine. Wielder of weapons grade cuteness. Poker shark and horse racing fanatic. So determined to see her band succeed that she fired herself as lead singer (she decided her voice wasn't strong enough for hard rock), then went looking for a replacement. Learned to play guitar after the band was formed. Definitely eccentric, possibly insane.
Kanami Tono - kah-nah-mee - Kanamincho or just Mincho - lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer and arranger. On stage, she's a savant mad riffer with a room temperature IQ and a huge crush on Saiki. In reality, she's a genius, and not just musically- she has a degree in economics with honors. A sweet, motherly woman who turns into a beast when you hand her a guitar.
Akane Hirose - ah-kah-neh - A-chan, the Gorilla - drums, sequencing, snacks, the leader the band doesn't have. What you see is what you get- a cheerful jock with a huge appetite who burns off the calories murdering her drums. Completely unflappable. Frequently snacks between songs. Has been known to sign her banana peels and throw them to the audience.
MISA - mee-sah - the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA! - bass, booze, occasional wet work. Usually stone faced. Barely acknowledges the audience's existence. Always has a beer or a bottle of Jim Beam on her Orange amp. Originally, these were ways of coping with stage fright. These days, that's just how the assassin rolls.
Saiki Atsumi - sah-ee-kee (but Psyche is close enough) - the Ice Queen, Sensei, Sai-chan - lead vocals, some lyrics, the "We're done" girl. Fashionista and train nerd. Regards her band mates, especially Kanami and Miku, with bemused exasperation. In total command on stage; hides behind Miku off stage (she's actually kind of shy).
One of the most refreshing thing about them is how they're like best friends and highly entertaining off stage as well. They could easily have their on TV variety show.

Their image is always as maid and the design is changed when one set is worn out (every couple of years). They just changed design this past Nov. 2023 when they performed their last concert of their 10th Anniversary tour. Also, most of their newer MVs have CC.
I am in my seventies and this band has brought me so much joy. They are the best band in rock/metal in 30 years from my perspective. I was lucky enough to see them last summer in concert and believe me they are incredible live. Every member gives their soul to the audience on stage. Their fans are a family and love this band and I mean that they LOVE this band. These women are so special and have none of the personality disoreders that almost any other band or performer gets with fame. So many of their fans are outside Japan and in the millions. Like most Band-Maid songs, I like them from the get-go but really start to appreciate them after more hearings and seeing their LIVE videos. The Maid costumes are to create "the Gap" meaning the difference in what you are Seeing, demure maids vs What you are hearing Hard Rock. They refer to their costumes as their "Battle Armor"
They toured the US in their 10th Anniversary year as a band. All venue were sold out!! They also performed at Lallapalooza, which is by invite only, becoming the 2nd Japanese band to perform there. Both performances were Hits!! There is video.
Welcome & thanks from Japan 有難う💛。 Band-Maid is one of the best bands in our country, especially in live performance. We say "Japan is the country obsessed by Rock Music". The history is very long and the obsession started in 1966 when Beatles visited Japan and held 5 concerts at Budokan. Speaking of hard rock / heavy metal music, a number of bands started to come to Japan since as early as 1970s : Led Zeppelin / Grand Funk Railroad (1971), Deep Purple (1972), Queen (1975), Kiss (1977), Cheap Trick / Van Halen / Scorpions (1978), Judas Priest (1978/79) and so on. Now, any type of rock can be enjoyed here, especially by many all-female or women-fronted bands. They are daughters of American / European rock, for sure. (Many are grand-daughters in terms of age.)

Yes, they are singing in English or Japanese. It is deep in their lyrical schtick. Their lyricists (The rhythm guitar/ backup vocals and the lead vocalist) both play with the language differences. These ladies always take everything to the top level, you'll never catch Band-Maid phoning it in, they're all about pushing themselves to the next level.
Great reaction to THE best live Hard Rock band on Earth. 🤘🤘 At 3:30 - MISA, the bassist, Kanami the lead guitarist and composer, and Miku the rhythm guitarist and founder of the band, are playing Hengao - "strange faces" - with Akane the drummer, which is making funny faces to try and put someone off. Akane, of course, laughs along while not missing a beat. It shows the ladies' confidence in each others' abilities that they can fool around like this while all of them slam out note-perfect Rock at full tilt. At 4:16 - MISA the bassist is holding her plectrum in her curled finger so she can produce it and switch from slapping to picking in half a nanosecond! Which you noticed! At 5:30 - Akane the drummer hitting two separate beats on her double kick pedals while simultaneously continuing the song melody on her snare, toms and cymbal. At 6:34 - a brief glimpse of Kanami laying down one sweet rolling chord pattern - pure class.

The bass player, Misa, does a "magic trick" with her guitar pick. She tucks the pick between her index finger and palm and then slaps & pops the bass using her thumb and middle finger. She can switch between slapping and picking quickly and seamlessly. An interviewer once asked her what happens if she drops the pick and she replied "I never drop it" and then went on to say that she had not dropped a pick in over two years. Nothing but total confidence from that girl.

They create new maid outfits "battle armor" when their current ones wear out. They debuted their latest outfits at the 10th Anniversary Tour Final at Yokohama Arena. There are a few official live videos from that okyuji (serving / concert) on the Band-Maid UA-cam channel.
They did lay into the Band-Aid pun in their early years, I think. They styled themselves as BAND-MAID®, just like BAND-AID®. But they've moved on to bigger and better things now…
And a thing about the maid outfits, FAR: as Fans and Maidiacs know, Miku -- the 2nd guitarist, lyricist, founder and who worked at a maid cafe -- wanted to show that everyday working "Kawaii" girls dressed as maids in high heels while having fun and smiling could rock as hard as any guy band sweating it up in their hip, poor tortured artists "outfits"... and by showing that contrast (the Gap), it would generate interest, which it so successfully has done! It also represents Woman Power (Equality), which is an important theme with the Maids.
Now they show up as Maids for all band business and interviews, etc. and have created a long-lasting, unmistakable, visual band brand. Very cleaver, Miku. Your diabolical plan for world domination is working, Po! Of course, none of this would work if their music and stage performance wasn't at such a remarkably high level. Band-Maid is considered by many of their fans and Maidiacs to be the best hard rock band in the world - maid outfits and all!
"Thrill" is the only official video where the girls are all in their maid outfits. MISA (bass player) quickly switched to black dresses and Saiki (lead singer) kept removing maid parts starting with the apron until only the bonnet is left. They also dress as maiko in their alter ego group called BAND-MAIKO.

Great reaction! You just listened to the best rock band of all time. I used to think the best of rock and roll was in the past. I go back a few years (decades, yikes!!) and grew up with Van Halen, Rush, Led Zepplin and others. What rock needed was a woman’s touch and these ladies, these beautiful ladies of Band Maid, are it!! Every member is an all-star from MISA at bass, to Kanami at lead guitar, Akane at drums. The vocals (Saiki and Miku) are the best!! Recommend Moratorium for more rock, Onset or From Now On for instrumental, Freedom for a kickass drum solo. Actually, pick any song out of their library and you can’t go wrong. Enjoy the rabbit hole.

This song is relentless the entire time. I have no idea what Saiki Atsumi(singer) is saying but it doesn't matter because she is so damn good. Misa(bass) switches from pick to finger to slap/pop technique in this song.
Super fun and perceptive reaction! If you like fashion, you have to at some point check out the two MVs from their alter- ego Band-Maiko, where they add traditional instruments and are dressed as apprentice geisha (maiko).

I'm glad you discovered "the Maids" a great rocking all female band from Japan. a great rabbit hole to do down for great rock songs. You mentioned the bass player, Misa is my favorite. Another all female band I'd recommend from Japan is Lovebites. Recommend you check out Shadowmaker (Music Video).
"Domination" is right in the middle of Band-Maid's range of styles. They play harder than this, softer than this -- instrumentals, acoustic. But "Domination" is classic Band-Maid.
I recommend the instrumental "From Now On" and the recent live performance of "Don't You Tell Me". But anything from them will be great. I could rattle off another twenty songs, and I would not exhaust their outstanding ones. They have over 120 songs, with (I think) all available online as audio on UA-cam, and many available as video.

Hello FAR (Hello! Hello!) You'll love this band for sure, from what they call the Gap (the contrast between dress and music) to the consistently great songwriting to their amazing performances. Band-Maid has a deep catalog and, incredibly, virtually all of them are great. You might try Don't You Tell Me (live) or Shambles or Unleash (the MV is super-fun!). They also do ballads (Daydreaming, endless story), acoustic (Mirage), and even have a side project you might enjoy called Band-Maiko (try Gion-Cho).

Miku worked at , what in Japan, are Maid Cafes. what we would think of as a restaurant i suppose and the "hostess/server" would dress as a maid. Miku thought one day " i think i'll start a rock band dressed as maids." and what we love today , Band Maid, was born. Thank you Miku!!
Domination is practically their theme song. On their latest tour they opened almost every performance with it. This video has all their hallmarks. Intricate composition that lets everyone have a turn in the spotlight. The call and response chorus that gets the audience in on the fun. And the part where Kanami, lead guitar, casually walks over to the rhythm guitarist, Miku and "dominates" her. A reminder of Kanami teaching Miku to play guitar.

If you do the acoustic I suggest you do a twofer: the irigional followed by the acoustic. Sayonakidori is sung by the second vocalist and rythym guitar player Miku Kobato aka the Pigeon. You will get that later.
Nice reaction, fun fact Band Maid and The Warning are big fans of each other and they met a while ago at a gig they were both playing at; they hit it off and had fun despite the language barrier!
I do really like both bands but a bit of a preference for The Warning!
Band Maid can really shred, but I think they have different audiences, Band Maid to me are a more younger person’s band whereas The Warning have pretty much a universal audience!
Just to put a vote in against the idea that The Warning have a more universal audience, I'm 56 and I love Band-Maid more than life itself! (i'm also obsessed with The Warning, don't get me wrong *laughs*)
@@markus_swiftbirds Along with a fair few more of us, I’m a fair bit older than you and have seen very young to a few years older than myself at TW gigs, I’ve not yet been to a Band Maid gig, so can’t really say other than what I’ve seen on UA-cam concerts.
Interesting that you think that as Band Maid pretty much built their reputation mainly on an older audience, it's old gits like me that have been in the Rock wilderness for the last 30 years that were initially drawn to them. It's been a talking point amongst concert goers that it's really only been the last few years that younger fans have really started getting hooked and that their audience has become more diverse and I think that has been partly down to some stunning festival appearances particularly in the US.

@Darrell-72, I saw both bands last year (The Warning at HOB-San Diego and Band-Maid at HOB-Anaheim) and I think both crowds were very similar. A really good mixture of young and not-as-young. Really diverse crowds in every way you can think of, actually. So very awesome! (As an aside, it shows how incredible both these bands are that they could get this agoraphobic, who's also afraid of crowds, out of the house and into a packed hall).

This is the best rock band in the world you will understand that if you continue to explore their music. Another great all girl Japanese band is NEMOPHILA but they are a lot heavier so you'd need to like that sort of thing. Try their song Rise iff you want to give them a try.
