  • After years of being hesitant to start sourdough we finally did it. What better time than during a terrible winter where we want to hide inside all day.
    We fully understand there are many ways to do this! Here is our take with what works best for us. We also have our amazing yeast bread recipe that we certainly wont forget about. The more options the better in our minds.

    You need to celebrate each loaf with a "tasting of the bread". Everyone gets a small piece, just out of the oven, and taste it plain, add some butter, try with local honey, use homemade jam and jellies, etc.

    I just baked my first ever sourdough loaf the other day. I definitely hyped myself up about it for months overthinking it before my friend gave me some starter.
    I’m in some Facebook sourdough groups that would freak out over your methods 😂 All that matters honestly is if it tastes good. There’s so much science to it and grading on “the perfect loaf” it really threw me off of it. It made me not want to get into it and then my friend gave me starter for my birthday and it basically forced me to try it. I actually do a really easy no discard method too and it’s that I keep it dormant and refrigerated and I only keep enough in the fridge to take out, feed and then leave me with the same amount to put back in the fridge. I watched a YT channel called GrantBakes and it was no BS and so easy to follow. I will say that I did the stretch and folds and then proofed it overnight in the fridge but it’s still pretty easy. It just takes pre planning more so than it does time. It’s not as easy as the loaves I bake with commercial yeast but I am discovering something new and hopefully going to have some fun with it!

    Thanks Lori. I completed making my starter a week ago now and have since been trying out recipes. Tried this one of yours today and it's fab. I put mine in a small loaf tin and cooked it up in an instant pot. I don't have an oven. It turned out my best tasting loaf yet. I used white rye and wholemeal flours. Fabulous. I am also going to adopt your starter keeping method. Why faff eh? I will never win awards for the best "correct" looking loaf but I do not care. It's only my households opinion I need.

    I’ve never made sour dough this way before. I see you didn’t add any salt. Leaving the lid on isn’t going to change the crust only will keep it from browning. You can make all kinds of things with discard. You can also dehydrate your starter.your starter will last indefinitely you don’t need to feed it only when you want to use it. If you get a dark liquid on it it’s called the hooch. You can either stir it in or pour if off. The hooch will give it more of a sour taste. I think your oven needs to be hotter though

    There are so many videos on YT showing how to do sourdough. You might want to watch some. The Dutch oven should be preheated with the oven. It should be hot before you put the bread in and if you put ice cubes between the parchment and Dutch oven then your sourdough will be softer. Also, you do need to score it with a blade before putting it in the oven. And finally you’re using too much flour buy separating out the sourdough like that. That might want to be watched if you’re watching your budget. Just trying to help. ❤ oh and if it doesn’t sit for over an hour after out of the oven then it could be gummy.

    • @remotelifealaska
      @remotelifealaska  6 днів тому +3

      This is exactly why we created this video, and why we stayed away from sourdough so long. Everyone seems to make it overly complicated and daunting to start, but in reality you do not need to do any of your listed steps and can keep it very simple and still get great results.
