Not trying to be a chooch, but you need to install flashing and prime your trim boards on all sides to seal prior to installing. Never caulk bare wood and priming all sides prevents future rot. Obviously not necessary for Azek or hardy board type material. Good basics though! Like i said, not being snooty, just trying to inform
Thanks, I'm installing new aluminum windows on my daughter's log house. Wood wrought has attacked this old house and I'd like to make sure the new logs don't deteriorate. Thanks for the heads up
Thanks for the video. I'll be replacing one that's in worse shape than this. It's on a General Store that operated in the 30's and 40's. Your video helped me get a better picture of what to expect. Thanks again,
Thank you for coaching me on the install. It is more than I thought it would be adding wood. I thought I would simply remove windows, clean the existing widow frame and push in the new. But am up for the challenge. 19 windows to do.
Where I live the rough opening has to be wrapped including putting a pan under the window. After installing the window you have to wrap the exterior as well as make and instal head flashing. It looks like your just relying on caulk to seal out the weather?
Thanks for the great and simple video. I am a mechanic by trade and never have replaced house windows, but after watching your video I am pretty confident I can do it. Thanks again.
Flash the bottom corners with window flashing tape. Then flash the bottom. Put a continuous bead of caulk around the sides and top of the nailing fin. Not the bottom. Put window in, shim to ensure it is level. Then flash tape the sides, then the top. Then caulk.
"my suggestion to you would be to take the trim off" That is a great tip for removing an old window. I'm not sure how I would have done it otherwise! THANKS!
Where is the moisture shield or flashing or weather guard . The most important part you forgot. Before you make a install video you should first learn how to install properly yourself.
Excellent video sir. I install glass and windows. I already know how to flash a window properly but your videos is rare and of excellent quality. Very helpful and educational.
Well should definitely use flashing at least on the sill to protect from water. Then what about squaring/leveling window with shims before install ? Then missing sealant which goes under nailing strip...missing vital steps !
How do you seal it? Just bought a home where they installed new windows around the house and it just rained today and its leaking from the top of the window near the frame on the inside of the window. It trips down onto the top of where the window slides.
Don't worry about all the rude comments. Why are they watching instructional videos if they already know everything? At least you took the extra time to record it.
Because I'm always trying to get better, to be a craftsman, to do things properly, with the right application of caulk. So I might charge more for this, and lose the job to a dooosh who does it wrong and covers his tracks with two tubes of caulk. There are windows like this which last hundreds of years without leaking. in New England.
Jaran Schwend just for everyone watching, i watch these videos so i can comment and tell our customers to stop doing dumb shit. Everything you did and installed was completely wrong. I take pride in my job, i work 5-7 days a week, my crew puts in 30-45 windows a day. Apartments we hit up to 145 windows a day. Theres nothing worse than getting caught up on a crappy window installation where the owner thought they could do it themselves. Call a professional! This is one of those things where u dont skimp out on. Ur better off leaving it alone than opening crap up and making it worse
Actually UA-cam recommended I watch and being old school and trying to learn from complete dumbasses like this fella is why I just couldn't stay retired from exterior remodeling after 34 years. You should have had your new unit in the opening within 10 minutes of being set up but instead chose to remove the entire old window. There's nothing wrong with the existing window frame but rather the sashes yet removed it. It was STRAIGHT with the house and not level and you removed it and leveled the new unit in. I can spot these leveled windows, now crooked, in a straight house with outstanding accuracy. Good luck with the outside trim fitting back where it came from too as the window isn't straight with the house anymore. Are you sucking up extra work by making the job far more complicated with on the job training for $30 an hour? The industry standard is to cap replacement window facings with metal where a guaranteed seal can be made and never with dirt attracting silicone.
Roger, Unless he knew the old window frame was water-tight, replacing the entire window is sometimes a better bet. People use replacement windows and after installation wonder why their walls leak - it's because the original window was leaking at it's perimeter and the replacement process didn't fix that. Not saying replacement is always wrong, or right - you have to identify the problem.
Hello they are replacing the windows in this house we are living in. Was this your home ? Did you live in it while you did the replacement? Can you tell me how to prepare for this ?
Preparing to replace a bedroom window in an old condo. The existing window is aluminum framed junk (mid 60's) and I just know the framing underneath is not in great shape and was simply an overall terrible install. Either didn't care, or just simply works without their heart in their workmanship. You answered a question I was asking myself. Getting ready to purchase an Anderson sliding window this weekend! But was asking myself if I should order one for "new construction" or replacement. Because I don't expect to find the framing in optimal condition around the existing window, I'll go for the new construction window. Thanks for the info, very helpful!:).
Love your 'realness ' brother! Wish more folks weren't afraid of 'just being themselves'! The project turned nice1 And, the inside trim looks handsomely done. On top of it all and more importantly your daughter was by your side!
Great video! You just need to add flashing. I am redoing the windows in the house my Dad built. He didn’t flash the windows and I had to use larger windows in order to cut out the rotted wood at the bottom. Modern caulking is great BUT miss a small place and water WILL get in!
Yes, you should. Drop edge flashing at the top, tape wrb over it. No sealant at top. Flash the jambs. Sill pan flash where the window sits. No sealant at sill to let water drain.
I don't know why when somebody tries to help somebody else. they're always fools did try to find the negative out of something that pretending to be good. yes! it may not be perfect but he did a great job and the whole idea was to give somebody hope that they can do it their self. For you professionals out there why won't you make a video step by step and watch people find your mistakes. And see how you feel. Don't forget we all are "born to live to teach the die" God bless you all
I want to replace aluminum windows in a brick wall. Do replacement windows have the flange? I really don’t want to bust out brick to install a window. What kind of job am I getting into?
sorry if this was asked.. but what year was your house built?.this looks very similar to the construction of the old house we bought , was built in 1942... we must try to tackle the replacement window thing 😕
+Doug Barry I will do another vid next window.. some of the interior shots could have been better . I can't believe this video is getting as many views as it is .. thanks for watching.
For future repair or removal I like to use pancake screws on the nailing flange. Simpson Strong Tie makes one variety that works well but there are many others just get the true pancake head. Also read the directions as most windows do not want the fastener seated tight but up just a hair for expansion and contraction especially on vinyl. I would also use one of the flashing systems before installing. Good video. Doug
Nice window but the vinyl siding was jacked up after the installation. Not sure how it looked before the install. I've got to install 3 windows, and I've got vinyl siding too, I'm just going to call Lowes and let them do it. I hope they don't leave the exterior looking jacked up.
Great video! This resembles my situation more than any other video! Question for you- looking straight down, there's that gap between the base (bottom/sil/stool, whatever it's called) and the siding. What is that material? On mine, it looks like wood that has become sort of fuzzy and I can break it apart easily. I'm wondering if I should fill it in with some kind of mud or place a base board that extends just to the end of the gap/inside edge of the siding. Thanks!
So did u go ahead and do something about it or r u still waiting on an answer. I would help but i have no clue what ur talking about. Prob. insulation though
The interior scenes were useless. I recommend re-shooting this with some LIGHT on the subject. Also, removing the old window was basically just mentioned, without explaining how it was held in-just "these old windows come out pretty easy."
This guy should be happy with his work. He shouldnt be teaching others though. Totally skipped flashing to keep water out. Flashing also prevent drafting. Dont use his instructions.
Was not the scope of his video. He even stated that his objective was the sizing of a window for an old house. Plenty of other video that demonstrate flashing and water proofing if that is what you are looking for.
Attention to detail makes a job look better. Caulking...just hit it with a wet rag and it leaves no edges. Scoring the edge of the old paint leaves it looking better. Thanks for the video.
appreciate it, but people do more research than this one video to determine best practices for your purposes. that's about as nice as I could be about that.
7:10 You skipped the part I was interested in. Did you install the new window on the bare wood 2x4? Water on wood = Rot. You gotta protect that 2x4 on the bottom. As a homeowner, I don't want to have to replace that same window ten years from now.
Hey man, thanks for the video. This is what UA-cam is supposed to be about. I learned something without a bunch of hype or commercials.
As a woman, I don't care what color the tape measure is, I really appreciate you taking the time to make this video . VERY HELPFUL!
Don't do your windows like this. He skipped the most important task in window replacement - keeping water out.

Very helpful. I have installed replacement windows but I have window i want to replace a window completely. This gives me an idea what to expect.
