Kakashi was a very strong ninja when he was young and when he got older he became a even stronger ninja because he found out what he was lacking when he was young and that was teamwork. His Comrade and also friend Obito taught him that with his life. Now that Kakashi was a Squad leader for team seven with Sasuke Sakura and Naruto he wanted to teach them how to work as a team so he used the same method Minato (Four Hokage) did with him which was the bell test. After that team seven passed. He is also known as the legendary copy cat Ninja or Kakashi of the mangekyou sharingan that obito gave to him while we was dying very long ago. I would say more about this story but the video explains it all or at least most of it because in his tale or story mode of his they didn't have him fight Zabuza. That's an OVA, so it's not exactly canon content... furthermore, maybe Minato wasn't able to rescue them at the point, since he was fighting in the battlefield.
