    Need to do these tests with sand or sandpaper...knife and metal tests are outdated, unrealistic and largely useless. Sand in pockets is what scratches most phone screens.

    • @holonaut
      @holonaut 4 роки тому

      I don't think keys are unrealistic, because that's pretty much what my phone screen cuddles with most of the time, and who has sand in their pockets once they're older than 12? But I agree sandpaper should be used so you can see which one is more resistant.

    • @admorris11
      @admorris11 4 роки тому +5

      Holonaut you’d be surprised how much dirt/sand is in your pocket that comes off of stuff in there. Keys simply do not scratch phone screens...the metal is too soft. If you get a scratch on your screen, there’s about a 95% chance it came from some type of sand/dirt substance.

  • @zeroangelmk1
    @zeroangelmk1 9 років тому +159

    It's kind of pointless to do a scratch test comparison using only steel. Gorilla Glass 2 and better are already designed to completely resist scratches from steel as steel isn't very hard on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness compared to other things like silicates (sands/rocks) and some carbons. It's also why sandpaper is a good final test for scratching, because sand and rocks WILL scratch most phone glass even if steel does not.

    • @seankim5827
      @seankim5827 9 років тому +3

      zeroangelmk1 So does dust. But thats why people should use screen protectors.

    • @zeroangelmk1
      @zeroangelmk1 9 років тому +4

      Sean Kim Yeah, definitely. I've been using my Note 3 for just over a year with no protector on it and the micro-abrasions while not interfering with the display at all have caused the glass to become much more grippy, and things like dust and fingerprints get stuck on the glass more often and are much harder to clean whereas when the screen was new, you just had give it a quick wipe with any kind of cloth and the stuff would wipe off easily.

    • @EleMenTfiNi
      @EleMenTfiNi 9 років тому +4

      +Sean Kim so instead of looking through some micro abrasion you could never notice, you'd rather look through some cheap plastic and a layer of gel adhesive?

    • @seankim5827
      @seankim5827 9 років тому +1

      EleMenTfiNi Wait I can explain. The scratches build up over time and weaken the strength of the glass. Therefore you use a screen protector to help prevent that. (Also other reasons but this maybe one of them)

    • @EleMenTfiNi
      @EleMenTfiNi 9 років тому +1

      Just seems rather silly to murk the screen up and add to the beautiful glass imo.

  • @YOURMOMxo69xo
    @YOURMOMxo69xo 9 років тому +52

    The reason the 4 shattered like that is because the new gorilla glass uses an old principle called the "Prince Rupert's drop". A quick explanation is that the glass is heated to red hot and then quickly cooled in water, the outer layer hardens immediately and the inner layer tries to compress (because when matter is heated it expands) it creates inward tension making the glass extremely strong, but the glass still has lots of potential energy built up which is turned kinetic when it breaks.

    • @YOURMOMxo69xo
      @YOURMOMxo69xo 9 років тому +4

      ***** Also I would like to side note that the bend test should have been thrown out. if either glass was just a bit scratched (like the gorilla 3) it would ruin the integrity of the piece.

      But the bend test suggests much greater durability against fractures for the G4.

    • @YOURMOMxo69xo
      @YOURMOMxo69xo 9 років тому +4

      Dialectical Monist I'm not debating or agreeing with that. I'm just saying that the bend test concludes nothing unless it's done with a brand new piece.

      But even if the glass is severely damaged, scratched, etc, I think this test strongly demonstrates that the g4 is considerably tougher against fracturing than the g3.
      And that was the point of the video. He wasn't trying to demonstrate the absolute scientific limits of the material, like a controlled lab, he was just giving a quick demonstration to give people a good idea of the difference.

    • @YOURMOMxo69xo
      @YOURMOMxo69xo 9 років тому +2

      Again, im not arguing that the glass is not stronger. If you'll read my original comment you'll note that I explain the opposite, that the glass is very strong. I'm saying the test is inconclusive.

  • @xjinit

    For scratches, it is extremely difficult for metal to scratch any type of glass. The real test would be an abrasive such as sand or sandpaper.

    • @xjinit

      zdw306 the chances of someone having sand in their pockets from let's say the beach is far more likely than someone scratching it with a diamond.

      @mr.w7899 9 років тому +4

      xjinit Yes very true mate, but may I remind you that I only meant it as a scratch test to see just how scratch resistant Gorilla glass is. I mean, many of these tests have someone trying to scratch the glass with the tip of a kitchen dagger/knife. How likely are you to have a huge kitchen knife in your pocket with your phone? It's a freaking test of sheer strength against one of the hardest known crystal structures.

    Even viewing two years after being posted, this video still provides a great demonstration of the true differences between the two versions of Gorilla Glass, 3 & 4. Excellent demo! I cannot imagine a scenario where the GG3 would ever be bent to the extreme at which it shattered, without additional, catastrophic damage being done to any phone. I must say though, the.GG4 is especially impressive with its additional flexibility. Altogether, I had NO idea that Gorilla Glass was so durable. Thanks for the great video. "Hey babe? Toss me my keys for a second, would ya?" ;-)

    This is ridiculous, 99% of the time its simply dirt, specifically, sand, that scratches screens. Gorilla Glass 4 is a damn gimmick, ALL screens i've owned from my HTC Touch, ipod touch, iphone 4s, galaxy s4, galaxy s5, s6 edge, have all scratched easily and from simple sand or dirt in my pocket, etc.

    • @jfphotography69

    I think you'd have a hard time scratching regular glass with those tools. It would be nice to use a slightly dirty rag, one that has a bit of sand dust in it (simulating worst case 'pocket' conditions). Or just use a piece of sand paper to really test the glass.

  • @alli1340
    @alli1340 8 років тому +9

    gorilla glass has more hardness than a knife or a key so it'll never get scratched. flexibility test was great.

    • @vincentboucher2547

      Add some dust from your pocket and BAM scratched screen. Because usually dust will have some particule that are harder then glass. That's where it gets scratched. Not keys.

    There's something called the "mohs mineral hardness scale." these probably rate a 7 out of ten, sapphire rates a 9. Pretty much sand and dirt will scratch it bad. Although sapphire is more scratch resistant, it is stiffer/harder and more prone to break.

Kept it in my tool bag with tools just moving loose nothing no scratches or cracks.
    My toddler throws it all around nothing.

    Should test against a metal table. The wood is going to flex beneath the plastic always giving it room for displacement which how I think it's avoiding be scratched. If it can't displace then I think it will scratch very quickly as well as probably break when you apply sharp stabbing motions. My guess is they would both fail from the first tests with a solid backplate.

    I'm late to the video here, but to see the scratching you really need to have a dark background and search for the scratches using angled light. My GG3 phones had micro-scratches with minimal touching to metal. I haven't scratched GG4 yet.

    • @tommythai1043
      @tommythai1043 9 років тому

      Agreed with the suggestion for improved testing. However, scratches aren't caused by metals as those are softer than minerals; sand is a likely culprit.

      +Tommy Thai You are probably right, but more than once I have cursed myself after putting my phone in my pocket with my keys to find the micro-scratches I'm referring too (look like spider webs sitting on the screen). But that's not to say it wasn't a coincidence.

      +Tommy Thai Ha! Yeah, I am to the point where I either carry my phone in hand or leave my keys in the car (park in the garage and have remote entry from my phone) just so it doesn't happen. It feels like catching a girlfriend cheating when one of those scratches shows up. Sadness, anger, disappointment, and like I don't want it anymore...

    It is said that Gorilla Glass 4 has 80% chance to stand from 1 meter fall.
    And I got the 20%.

    Based on this test do you think i'll be ok without a screen protector on my S7 edge for general wear and tear? I'm going to be buying one soon along with the offical samsung leather back case but i can't seem to find any good screen protectors due to the curved display.

  • @demonrule
    @demonrule 7 років тому

    You should do a test where you slide glass over a sand-covered surface. I was at work lying underneath an air conditioner and my S6 falls out of my pocket and slid across the floor about 2 feet. When I picked it up, the screen was covered in scuff marks. I didn't think it was possible for the gorilla glass to be blemished so easily...but it was.

    you are more likely to scratch your phone in your pocket or a ladies purse or drop it on the ground before you push your phone to a bending limit or you would not buy protection for it . great video im glad none of that glass hit you in the face .

    The gorilla glass 4 uses compressive strength similar to a prince ruperts drop. The inside layers are always pulling in on the outer layers. Just like a price ruperts drop if a fracture is created, the whole thing explodes in milliseconds.

    You're finger placement on the Gorilla Glass 3 vs gorilla glass 4 is off. Also the scratching duration was alot long for 3 for all tests. You are trying to hard. Not accurate

  • @AndyWen

    in order to make any difference on scratch test, you need to use Sand papers!
    need to find what type of Gorilla Glass 4 is similar to what type of Gems Stones.
    Diamond Sand Papers will surely Scratch pretty much anything.
