1. Rush - Rush 2. Kansas - Kansas 3. Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadwav 4. Gong - You 5. Deep Purple - Burn 6. Chicago - Chicago VII 7. Yes - Relaver 8. Mahavishnu Orchestra - Apocalypse 9. Jefferson Starship - Dragon Fly 10. Bad Company - Bad Company 11. King Crimson - Red 12. Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic I consider this to be my second favorite album after the perfect masterpiece that is 1977’s Aja. Great batch of songs.
Catch-up time again: Day 11: Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight The first of the married duo after Richard left Fairport Convention, this album shows a more modern inflection of folk rock than Fairport. Sporting for the most part a fairly dour drunken atmosphere to brilliant effect, anchored by Richard's wonderfully minimal guitar work and Linda's earthy and magical voice that matches the talents of Fairport's Sandy Denny. Day 10: Big Star - Radio City Soldiering on after the departure of guitarist/songwriter Chris Bell, Alex Chilton and company serve up the goods again with their blend of sparse, but driving power pop with soaring Byrds inflections. More syncopated and musically interesting this time around; this may be my favorite of theirs. Day 9: Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) This, I think, is the one of Eno's first three albums that pointed towards the New Wave genre the most. More space in the mix than Warm Jets and the synths are more squelchy, there's a reserved quaintness to the eccentricity here and a more marked diversity between the more up songs - driven nicely by drummer Robert Wyatt and guitarist Phil Manzanera - and the more down and quiet tracks, with the title track very much serving as a groundwork for his later ambient works.
20. Sparks - Propaganda (Island) The Mael brothers originally called their band Halfnelson in 1968 Los Angeles. Somehow they got Todd Rundgren to produce these unknowns' debut album in 1971. That and the follow up, Tweeter in Woofer's Clothing (1973) were really influential art/prog pop with tongue-in-cheek dadaist lyrics. They moved to London and plugged into the bubblegum glam scene, issuing a series of singles. Queen opened for them on a tour and learned a thing or two. Their fourth album sees them riding a peak. There really needs to be a book about Sparks.
Interesting pick. I need to check out their very early material. I saw them in concert in 1976, but am only familiar with a few of their mid-70s albums. I think it’s Netflix that has a great documentary on the band.
Great album and band. I imagine they aren't prime SoT material, but someone on one of the shows might like them. I remember Simon mentioning liking REM once during UK Connection's Great Final Albums show, so who knows?
@@Orange_Affinity They dabble in some prog pop, just a half step and a smirk away from 10cc and Steely Dan so I would imagine there's plenty of Sparks fans in SoT!
My pick today is the debut album by Bad Company. Some rockers, some soulful ballads, Paul Rodgers' wonderful voice. Short & sweet, 8 songs, 35 minutes, a classic.
Robin Trower Bridge of Sighs. The English blues rock guitar great released a stream of fine blues rock albums after leaving Procol Harum, all showcasing his emotive playing. His other secret weapon was the superb soulful voice of Scottish vocalist/bassist Jimmy Dewar, a man with honeyed tones similar to the likes of Frankie Miller and Paul Rodgers. This is the album many fans tend to think of as his best and it is my favourite of his ( just ahead of Victims of The Fury and Twice Removed from Yesterday). The album flows superbly from barnstorming opener Day of The Eagle, which is about as heavy as Trower got, through to the supremely almost mesmeric title track to another signature song Too Rolling Stoned and the closing Little Bit of Sympathy. There are also a couple of deeper cuts that are great examples of the chemistry of the band in The Fool and Me and Lady Luck, but truthfully there isn't a bad or even average track here.
Hi Jerry, you may remember be mentioning in the past that I struggled to connect with Trower, despite his fine playing and Dewar's emotive vocals. It's not that I can't listen to it, quite the opposite, it just doesn't get me THERE, if you see what I mean. Totally ironically, I LOVE what I've heard of the new one he's just put out with the fabulous Sari Shorr on vocals... Odd!
@@iainhead9898 Not odd at all Iain. As Pete so correctly tells us all, we all hear things differently. It took me a while to be seduced by Trower's output. I didn't connect immediately.
Hey Pete same pick.... Great minds think alike except mine are in order... Deep Purple - Stormbringer - In a retrospective review Alex Henderson of AllMusic writes that "Stormbringer falls short of the excellence of Machine Head and Who Do We Think We Are, but nonetheless boasts some definite classics - including the fiery "Lady Double Dealer," the ominous title song (a goth metal treasure), the sweaty "High Ball Shooter," and the melancholy ballad "Soldier of Fortune." Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple following Stormbringer and its subsequent tour, publicly citing his dislike for the funky direction the band was taking. Glenn Hughes nevertheless praises the album and Blackmore's contributions: "People who listen to Stormbringer, please listen...Ritchie Blackmore is damn funky, whether he likes it or not. He played wonderfully on the album."
My favorite 1974 album for day 12 is "Queen of the Night" by Maggie Bell. Maggie Bell is a brilliant Scottish blues rock singer that first became popular as co-lead vocalist for the band Stone The Crows. This was her first and probably finest solo album fantastically captured by legendary record producer Jerry Wexler. Every song is a bluesy funky joy to listen to and she is the only singer that I have ever heard that even comes close to the vibe that I got from Janis Joplin. I've always thought that she is a terribly underrated singer especially in America. And if you've never heard her before there are several classic videos of her fronting Stone the Crows in the early seventies on youtube. Some of my favorite tracks on this album are excellent covers of "After Midnight" and "A Woman Left Lonely" and the bring down the house emotion she puts into the album's title song. Day 1-Burn-Deep Purple Day 2-Standing on the Verge of Getting It On-Funkadelic Day 3-Energized-Foghat Day 4-Sally Can't Dance-Lou Reed Day 5-Wally-Wally Day 6-Mirage-Camel Day 7-Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends-Emerson, Lake & Palmer Day 8-Journey to the Centre of the Earth-Rick Wakeman Day 9-Heart Like a Wheel-Linda Ronstadt Day 10-Refugee-Refugee Day 11-Saints & Sinners-Johnny Winter Day 12-Queen of the Night-Maggie Bell
Cheers Pete-Thin Lizzy Nightlife. This album took some time to grow on me and it’s solid. Deep Purple has two in 1974 that qualify for me. More on that…
My Pick for Today #12 YES - Relayer The only YES album that my older brother had was Classic Yes, and I found Relayer in a cut-out bin and I love the cover and didn't recognize any songs so I took it home and loved it! Kicking off with the side long epic Gates Of Delirium! side two opens with the fusion styled Sound Chaser which was cool because I was recently getting into Return To Forever and Al DiMeola, then the the album closes with the wonderful To Be Over. my second favorite YES album.
My pick for day12 is Pete's from yesterday. Return to Forever - Where Have I Known You Before? An absolutely killer record. Chick Corea, Al Di Meola, Stanley Clarke, Lenny White. Sublime.
Ranking them #31-1. Own all of these, most on vinyl. #20-Scorpions-Fly to the Rainbow #21-Kiss-Hotter Than Hell #22-Kansas-Kansas #23-Joe Walsh-So What #24-Yes-Relayer #25-Rory Gallagher-Irish Tour 74 #26-Nazareth-Rampant #27-Rush-Rush #28-David Bowie-Diamond Dogs #29-Thin Lizzy-Nightlife #30-BTO-Not Fragile #31-Budgie-In For the Kill
Day 12: Borboletta by Santana. Not as great as the first four albums, but still really damn good. Tracks like the calming opener "Canto de los Flores", the very funky feel of "Give and Take", "One with the Sun" with its awesome guitar solo, the great instrumental "Aspirations", "Practice What You Preach", which sounds like a church hymn, and the entire instrumental suite at the end consisting of "Here and Now", "Flor de Canela", "Promise of a Fisherman" and the title track is worth the price of admission alone.
# 20 Return to Forever - Where Have I Known You Before? Pete mentioned it yesterday. Even if it hasn't yet reached the level of "Romantic Warrior", "Where have I known...?" is still impressive. And it remains a mystery to me how a 19-year-old could already have such skills on the guitar… I would at least like to mention Stanley Clarke's excellent self-titled album from the same year, which didn't quite make it into my ranking. # 21 Be-Bop Deluxe - Axe Victim # 22 Weather Report - Mysterious Traveller # 23 Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight # 24 Yes - Relayer # 25 Joni Mitchell - Court and Spark # 26 Deep Purple - Burn # 27 Kraftwerk - Autobahn # 28 Todd Rundgren’s Utopia - same # 29 Tangerine Dream - Phaedra # 30 Peter Hammill - The Silent Corner and the Empty Stage # 31 Triumvirat - Illusions on a Double Dimple
Jumping on board only now, and my pick #20 is: Frank Zappa-Apostrophe Not the biggest Zappa fan in the world, but this is a cool album; I especially like "Cosmik Debris". Numbers 21-31 (in no specific order): King Crimson-Starless and Bible Black, Deep Purple-Stormbringer, Yes-Relayer, Queen II, Neil Young-On the Beach, Todd Rundgren's Utopia, Van Morrison-Veedon Fleece, David Bowie-Diamond Dogs, The Rolling Stones-It's Only Rock 'n' Roll, 10cc-Sheet Music, Kiss-Hotter than Hell.
Todays pick: Joni Mitchell - "Court And Spark". One of her biggest selling albums for good reason. Striking a perfect balance of pop, folk, and jazz, these sophisticated arrangements show off Joni`s incisive and sometimes playful songwriting. Proof that commercial success doesn`t have to be an artistic compromise.
Today my pick #20 is The Marshall Tucker band A New Life their 2nd studio album. This album has a blend of Country, blues, jazz and Rock N roll. Great album, my favorite Blue Ridge Mountain Sky, but not a bad song on here. Also the fiddle on the album is played by Charlie Daniels. 20- The Marshall Tucker Band A New Life 21- Chicago VII 22- The Guess Who Road Flood 23- UFO Phenomenon 24- Elton John Cariabou 25- Eric Clapton 461 Ocean Boulevard 26- Atlanta Rhythm Section Third Annual Pipe Dreams 27- Deep Purple Stormbringer 28- Billy Joel Streetlife Serenade 29- Joe Walsh So What 30- Gordon Lightfoot Sundown 31- John Denver Back Home Again
#20- Queen - Sheer Heart Attack The second album they released in '74. Another step towards being one of the most important bands in the history of Rock. Albums That Are 50 Years Old in 2024 #20- Queen - Sheer Heart Attack #21- Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway #22- Pappo s Blues - Vol.5 #23- Bob Marley - Natty Dread #24- Secos & Molhados - Secos & Molhados II #25- Kraftwerk - Autobahn #26- Gong - You #27- Nico - The End #28- Kiss - Kiss #29- Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) #30- David Bowie-Diamond Dogs #31- Sparks - Kimono My House

Day 20: Elton John- Caribou Day 31: Uriah Heep- Wonderworld Day 30: Fleetwood Mac- Heroes Are Hard to Find Day 29: Supertramp- Crime of the Century Day 28: David Bowie- Diamond Dogs Day 27: Scorpions- Fly to the Rainbow Day 26: Judas Priest- Rocka Rolla Day 25: Bee Gees- Mr. Natural Day 24: ABBA- Waterloo Day 23: KISS Day 22: Queen II Day 21: The Sweet- Desolation Boulevard
Good morning (afternoon, evening or night), Pete. Back later for your selection. Personal pick today? Perhaps the most recent addition to the 1974 list - Turn Of The Cards by Renaissance. Not much to add to your discussion of the album when you picked it earlier this month. Would note, though, that after finding the SoT channel four years ago, Renaissance was one of the first bands you discussed that led me to a band that had been off my radar and which is now a favorite. Thanks for that, Pete, and all the other great music found through SoT and its community. Looking forward to your next selection.
YES/ 7️⃣4️⃣. RELAYER ( no order). First time YES made an album outside of London = Squires home Patric MORAZ/ Hammond organ/ Mellotron etc. thanks again Pete for Your time 👍💯
#31 Second Helping - Lynyrd Skynyrd #30 Relayer - Yes #29 King Crimson - Red #28 Wishbone Ash - Theres The Rub #27 Trapeze- Hot Wire #26 Budgie - In For The Kill #25 Roxy Music - Country Life #24 Chris Youlden - City Child #23 John Lennon - Walls & Bridges #22 Billy Cobham - Crosswinds #21 Jethro Tull - War Child #20 Thin Lizzy - Nightlife
Pick # 12 Hero and Heroine by the Strawbs. A little bit of everything on this album from the first track, an almost Floyd like beginning to Autumn a fantastic start the album. Out in the Cold with a bit of a Lindisfarne like intro, a nice folky feel to this one. Round and Round and the title track a little bit more 'rocky' two great additions to the album, Lay a Little Light on Me a gentler tune nice guitar work on one. A great album from the Strawbs and one of their best efforts that's for sure!
Stormbringer is my favorite deep purple album . I saw that tour in S.F. with Deep Purple headliner ,ELO on the Eldorado tour second and Elf opening the show. You have to love Bill Graham productions.
Mick Ronson - Slaughter on 10th Avenue - February 1974 His debut album featuring fellow Spider Trevor Bolder on bass, its a cracking Glam Rock affair with two tracks written/co written by David Bowie who's influence runs throughout the album, there's not a bad track on here 10/10.
No. 12. George Harrison - Dark Horse. 😃👍. Released in December 1974. This was the fifth studio album. While not the best GH album ever, I still love it. 🔥. Rock Always! - Heather
My pick 12 has been mentioned: Genesis, The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. From pick 13 onwards i am in what was my top 20 of 1974, though three albums have been added to the top 20 recently. One of the three is Camel, Mirage, which i have already picked.

Burn is quite good, though I still have to listen to that other one. Anyways .. My Day 12 Pick: Blue Oyster Cult - Secret Treaties The band's third album, and it kicks ass from opener "Career of Evil" to closer "Astronomy." Other highlights include "Dominance and Submission," "ME 262," "Harvester of Rice," and "Flaming Telepaths."
Day 12: Thin Lizzy - Nightlife Day 11: Rick Wakeman - Journey To The Centre Of The Earth Day 10: ELP - Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends Day 9: Weather Report - Mysterious Traveller Day 8: Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway Day 7: Deep Purple - Burn Day 6: Return To Forever - Where Have I Known You Before Day 5: Mahavishnu Orchestra - Apocalypse Day 4: Uriah Heep - Wonderworld Day 3: Yes - Relayer Day 2: Kraftwerk - Autobahn Day 1: King Crimson - Red
Hi Pete. Dave from London. Fantastic Purple picks, and both are coming up on my list. My pick today is a bit left-field. It's SNOWFLAKES ARE DANCING by TOMITA. This Japanese musician's imaginative synth interpretations of classical piano pieces (often called 'tone paintings') by French composer Claude Debussy. I bought this album at the time, and as well as a great listen, it also served as ambient mood music. Favourite tracks the blissful Clair de Lune and the vivid, playful Arabesque No. 1. I was mesmerised by these synthesiser soundscapes of the early 70s, and I have another pick coming up soon. Over the years I came to prefer the original piano pieces by Debussy, but this album is still so close to my heart.
Great choice, Dave! I remember when we studied Pictures of an Exhibition in music class, we listened to Mussorgsky's and Ravel's versions as well as ELP's and Tomita's synthesiser adaptation.
OK, Pete, so I AM doing mine in order, so here we go: #20: Mysterious Traveller by Weather Report - I am a fan of ALL of Weather Report’s phases! Great LP! #21: The Trio by Peterson, Pass, & Pederson #22: Stormbringer by Deep Purple #23: Sheer Heart Attack by Queen #24: Paper Money by Montrose #25: Self-Titled Debut by Rush #26: In for the Kill! by Budgie #27: Secret Treaties by Blue Oyster Cult #28: Reality by Monk Montgomery #29: Self-Titled Debut by Bad Company # 30: Sweet Fanny Adams by Sweet # 31: Carolina County Ball by Elf
Odds and Sods by the Who. Underrated excellent album. Kinda forgotten about. Put the money down, pure and easy, naked eye, long live rock, ect. Roger's voice is top notch !
12) The Raspberries - Starting Over Starting Over was a great way to kick off the new Raspberries, but it was, unfortunately, the band's final album before Eric Carmen's solo career took off. Despite being one of the great albums of 1974, it didn't sell terribly well, and the group fell apart at the seams. Starting Over is a great album from start to finish. "Overnight Sensation" is one of the great achievements of the AM radio era (John Lennon and Elton John regarded it as one of the best songs ever written), and I've always suspected that only its length kept it from being the smash it deserved to be. "Play On" and "Rose Coloured Glasses" definitely make me wonder what might have lay ahead for the group. A few of my friends actually mistook "I Don't Know What I Want" for a lost Who track, and Michael McBride's furious mugging of his drum kit, a la Keith Moon, definitely added to that impression. I don't know that this song ever got any kind of airplay, but I don't know why it didn't. "Cruisin' Music" is proof that Eric Carmen wrote better Beach Boys tunes than Brian Wilson by 1974, and the album closer, "Starting Over" is another of the group's classic tracks. To this day, listening to Starting Over makes me think that four albums were way too few for The Raspberries to get their message across, and I've always wished for more. 1) Slade - Slade In FLAME 2) Thin Lizzy - Night Life 3) Charlie Daniels Band - Fire On The Mountain 4) Al Green - Explores Your Mind 5) Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic 6) Mott The Hoople - The Hoople 7) Queen - Sheer Heart Attack 8) Strawbs - Hero & Heroine 9) Supertramp - Crime Of The Century 10) Sweet - Sweet Fannie Adams/Desolation Boulevard 11) The Spinners - Mighty Love 12) The Raspberries - Starting Over
Can't argue with that one, Pete! Classic for sure. My pick for today is one you've already covered - 'Turn of the Cards' by Renaissance - no weak songs on this - hardly a weak moment, in fact, IMHO
Pick today: Loggins & Messina - On Stage. One of the best live albums (double album)of all time, side one mostly acoustic and then more rockin and a 21 minute version of Vahevala with almost jazz improvisation. They had a really amazing band around their own guitars and great voices!
Easily one of the best Purple albums for sure, and I was fortunate enough not only to see most of this album live a couple of months ago when I saw Glenn Hughes live in Brasília, but also to see the two guys that made Deep Purple create the MK III lineup: David Coverdale in Whitesnake (back in 2019), and, as I mentioned, Hughes! Honestly, Pete, I thought you were gonna talk about this album later, but I'm not complaining and that's fine!
GENTLE GIANT -THE POWER AND THE GLORY - Probably my second favourite GG album - still have the original vinyl. Every track is first class and the vocals are exceptional. As a sixteen year old this album blew me away. The song writing on So Sincere, No God's a Man and Cogs in Cogs is some of their best. Why does this music endure after 50years, and why do so many contemporary prog bands cite GG as an influence? Simple, they created the template for all those that followed. Much imitated, never bettered.
@@crazymanmichael100 Definitely 1974. In a Glass House was 1973 and in 1972 they released both Three Friends and Octopus. Says 1974 on my vinyl album. Cheers.
Day 12. Betty Davis - They Say I'm Different The former Mrs. Miles Davis kicks off a record pure hard rock/funk. Before other women went down this musical path Betty was making songs that were both sweet and sultry. This is a must listen to record. The musicianship mainly comes from West coast players, many who are fairly well known. 1. Gram Parsons - Grievous Angel 2. Grateful Dead - From the Mars Hotel 3. Gong - You 4. Guru Guru - Dance Of The Flames 5. Lynyrd Skynyrd - Second Helping 6. Joe Pass - Virtuoso 7. 2nd Chapter of Acts - With Footnotes 8. Kraftwerk - Autobahn 9. The Meters - Rejuvenation 10. Hawkwind - Hall of the Mountain Grill 11. Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson - Winter in America 12. Betty Davis - They Say I'm Different
20. Genesis "The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway" 21. Judas Priest "Rocka---Rolla" 22. UFO "Phenomenon" 23. Scorpions "Fly to the RainBow" 24. The Sweet "Desolation Blvd" 25. Jefferson Starship "Dragonfly" 26. Badfinger "Wish You Were Here" 27. Earth, Wind & Fire "Open Our Eyes" 28. Gong "YOU" 29. Bachman Turner Overdrive "BTO Not Fragile" 30. Nektar "Down To Earth" 31. Elton John "Greatest Hits" released November 1974

Life is better with music.
Nice pick, great early Eloy album.

Thank you.🎤🎸🎵🎹🥁
20. Country Life - Roxy Music
Catch-up time again:
Day 11: Richard & Linda Thompson - I Want to See the Bright Lights Tonight
The first of the married duo after Richard left Fairport Convention, this album shows a more modern inflection of folk rock than Fairport. Sporting for the most part a fairly dour drunken atmosphere to brilliant effect, anchored by Richard's wonderfully minimal guitar work and Linda's earthy and magical voice that matches the talents of Fairport's Sandy Denny.
Day 10: Big Star - Radio City
Soldiering on after the departure of guitarist/songwriter Chris Bell, Alex Chilton and company serve up the goods again with their blend of sparse, but driving power pop with soaring Byrds inflections. More syncopated and musically interesting this time around; this may be my favorite of theirs.
Day 9: Eno - Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy)
This, I think, is the one of Eno's first three albums that pointed towards the New Wave genre the most.
#12 Axe Victim - Bebop Deluxe
Bill Nelson is a hugely underrated guitarist.
Great to see multiple mentions of this album on SOT. Growing up I was the only person to own this album among my friends. Its endured!
He is indeed, an excellent player. Nice choice.
20. Sparks - Propaganda (Island)
The Mael brothers originally called their band Halfnelson in 1968 Los Angeles.
@@larrysmith5249 Thanks for the reminder! It's not available in US on Netflix, but I can rent it on Prime!
My pick today is the debut album by Bad Company. Some rockers, some soulful ballads, Paul Rodgers' wonderful voice. Short & sweet, 8 songs, 35 minutes, a classic.
Great choice!
Great choice Jerry!
@@steverogers2635 Thanks Steve.
Odd!
Great pick Jerry. I’m glad that Robin is still making music
@@iainhead9898 Not odd at all Iain. As Pete so correctly tells us all, we all hear things differently. It took me a while to be seduced by Trower's output. I didn't connect immediately.
Hey Pete same pick.... Great minds think alike except mine are in order... Deep Purple - Stormbringer - In a retrospective review Alex Henderson of AllMusic writes that "Stormbringer falls short of the excellence of Machine Head and Who Do We Think We Are, but nonetheless boasts some definite classics - including the fiery "Lady Double Dealer," the ominous title song (a goth metal treasure), the sweaty "High Ball Shooter," and the melancholy ballad "Soldier of Fortune."
Guitarist Ritchie Blackmore left Deep Purple following Stormbringer and its subsequent tour, publicly citing his dislike for the funky direction the band was taking.
Day 1-Burn-Deep Purple
Day 2-Standing on the Verge of Getting It On-Funkadelic
Day 3-Energized-Foghat

And it remains a mystery to me how a 19-year-old could already have such skills on the guitar…
I would at least like to mention Stanley Clarke's excellent self-titled album from the same year, which didn't quite make it into my ranking.

Not the biggest Zappa fan in the world, but this is a cool album; I especially like "Cosmik Debris".

Not much to add to your discussion of the album when you picked it earlier this month.

12) The Raspberries - Starting Over
Starting Over was a great way to kick off the new Raspberries, but it was, unfortunately, the band's final album before Eric Carmen's solo career took off.

You Can't Do It Right from Stormbringer is my favorite! Go 1974 !!
