    @skebo514 4 роки тому +32

    For the person who asked the first question here are a few more reasons to learn to hybrid pick. In addition to what dean said hybrid picking also allows you to play chords that have skipped strings. Also it allows you to play all the notes at the exact same time. This is similar to when you plauly a chord on the piano vs strumming a guitar. It definatly has its place.

    • @DeanLamb
      @DeanLamb  4 роки тому +14

      Totally, hybrid picking made me a better guitarist.

    • @skebo514
      @skebo514 4 роки тому +1

      @@DeanLamb I went through a pretty huge phase of learning some of the newer CHON albums and they use hybrid picking so much I had to get good at it.

      I have a feeling the dudes saying no point to hybrid picking are just riffing on power chords or doing some half tempo strummin. Playing bass fingerstyle and slapping has done more to improve my classical and fingerstyle playing across all guitars, than anything else.

    Question: What would you guys say is the easiest way to get into recording at home, specifically guitar?

    • @blackdog6969
      @blackdog6969 2 роки тому +1

      Seeing as you haven't got an answer, tabs is the absolute easiest way, using soundfonts. After that is well, recording. A cheap but reliable interface like a Scarlett or another kind works usually well, and there is plenty of free plugins and (if you're ok to be a bit of a scab) infinite trials of DAWs, like Reaper. I myself have been meaning to get a Reaper licence but the plugins are the most important part. Audacity can use most any other DAW plugin but you need to basically set them up individually per take which is very time consuming if you make mistakes. Hope it helps, I would give you some pointers on what plugins and expansions for amp and speaker sims if I remembered them but its been about 18 months since I had a working pc.
      Just back to easiest and what I've said here, the only songs I've released are pure digital, no actual playing. That's guitar, bass, drums and even vocals on one of them. All free software. Find what works for you, the sounds you need and all that. Free stuff works well for home demos, when you find yourself at the point of recording properly, you'll have what you need at a studio

    • @greglane334
      @greglane334 2 роки тому

      @@blackdog6969 Thanks for the reply,I've since invested in a cheap interface for vocals and guitar,I do bass and drums through software and mix it all in reaper. Not ideal but does the job!

    7:39 "Everybody plateaus" too true. I remember hitting that first major bump after playing for a few years, 5 or 7 or 9 years, the truth is, the consolation is, that you are actually making progress. No matter how long it takes to reach that point it really is a milestone to feel that way. It's like learning to talk, or learning anything. You learn what you need to 'know' to be 'good', now it becomes a game of proficiency, and there are many areas, many niches in which you can focus a skill. Chickenpickin', sweeps, fingerstyle, tremolo, blah-de-blah..

Try to think about music in new ways, even just picking up a new instrument can bring all sorts of wonder back in. Be open to new experiences! There is something to be learned in everything!!

    The plateau is real. I’ve played for 17 years and reached that point 5 times. The third time was so bad that I actually did lose all faith and drive and didn’t pick up a guitar or bass for 2 years or so. I lost a lot of the progress I had made and had to rewind a bit, which made it even more difficult to return. Now when it happens I make a conscious decision to switch it up.

    I used to play acoustic using multiple fingers to pluck the strings (not going to say this was any sort of proper technique because I’ve never actually had lessons) but I never even considered adding fingers to my picking technique on an electric guitar. I stopped learning much of anything new in the last 10 years of playing (nearly 30 total), but I may try hybrid picking in the near future. But I’ve never learned traditional sweeping or really even consider myself a lead player at all. You guys definitely inspire me to do more though!

    2:55 I need to relearn/reincorporate hybrid picking into my playing. And I really like the tip on practicing arpeggiating. I used hybrid picking for a few years, then got really lazy with general practicing (like, from 3-6 hours a day to a measly 3 hours a week). The saying, "like riding a bicycle" is not absolute, in my experience. 'Practice makes perfect' is more apt.

    Plateau is a natural period where you are completing integration of things that you know, even if you feel like you're repeating yourself.
    What plateaus indicate is that you have assimilated a certain level of particular skills and knowledges lol an analogy to this is when people like Pavel Tsatsouline are speaking about periods where in your development you aren't working very hard and that's actually one of the points on the road you're looking for because if you hold that level for a month or so, even if you stop playing at that time for a year, you'll be able to go back and you'l hurt but most of your muscle memory and mental reflexes will still be there. I visualize it as a period of hardening - if you look, it's becoming clear that nearly all sports are transitioning to longevity training because, for an instance, if you look at long distance runners some of the most successful and consistently high performing people are older, it takes YEARS to put some levels of training on (at least for most ordinary people, I've got a couple gifts but I wouldn't say they're exactly talent).

    Guitarist of almost 14 years here. I just started learning what the notes on the fretboard are. Is this a worthwhile skill to develop? How often do you really think about what notes to play in the next chord?

    i watched one of ur old 'dean attempts' vids, and u introduced me to pick-slanting, which has really helped me already even after a few days, but the one thing that i cant get is how to switch between upward and downward pick slanting during a run. could u talk about that?

    Hey! Can you suggest some riffs, especially Archspire riffs, for using as daily practicing of different guitar technics. That riffs, what you can loop and increasing speed.

    The thing I do now to get my rythm better is COUNTING. Count OUT LOUD when you play WITH YOUR MOUTH, not in your head. But that's me, some people just nail the groove)

    I struggle most with pinch harmonics and accidentally ringing out strings when releasing bends.

      I have that bending problem aswell, what works for me is using a string damper stuff, and also get very concious on where the problem is so I can try to approach that bend on an upstroke, which puts my hand on perfect position to then mute the other string with the tip of my ringer and middle finger, which is great cause I don't always use a string damper stuff, ofc it doesn't always happened when I'm too distracted or just noodling but my hopes are that if I keep practicing it, I can do it automatically everytime on the future, you could also try the palm mute approach on the other strings as well, I do confess that doesn't work for me on that specific situation with the bend release though cause in my case what is happening is that I am kind of like slightly plucking the string above with my bending finger when I'm releasing the bend, I've also noticed it only happens to me on some places on the fretboard and with big bends, so this is probably different for each player I guess, but hey I think is cool that you have already detect the problem, as that puts you closer to fixing it, anyways sorry for the long reply, hope it's somehow helpful
