- Researchers are studying feather star ecology in the Philippines, including the unique ways infestor species have adapted to their hosts. Feather stars are an ancient species of marine invertebrate. Some species are mobile when seeking food or escaping predators, but most spend their time perched on surfaces.

One focus of the researchers’ study is infestors-animals that live on feather stars and feed on their waste. Infestors can mimic the feather stars’ colors and patterns very closely. According to researcher Angela Stevenson, feather stars may be “providing inhabitants with everything they desire in a safe haven.”

If this thing touched my leg while I was swimming I'd pass away on the spot.

Oh my

That thing is straight up NOPE
Maybe it would just tickle? But if you’re sure about what would transpire could I convince you to add me to your will? Will accept 1 dollar and up

they're actually related to starfish
@@iseeyou4622 thank you captain obvious
Perfect camouflagers, and perfect for others to camouflage.
It's amazing that the ocean still holds many secrets that we haven't discovered yet.
What if, the whole Earth is a giant living organism? Trees, ferns, and grass are like Earth’s hairs and lava is its blood? If you look at lava channels underground, they resemble our blood vessels.

@@BruhWhoisLuke Ehh… better late than nothing lol.
If you ever feel like youve lost that child like curiosity and wonder for our world, just look at all the magical creatures nature has brought into existence
Idk they are busy going to space
Sort of like a fern-looking mobile squatters' paradise? Never knew these things existed until today. I wonder how big these things can get. Thanks for sharing National Geographic.
Azliana Lyana I saw something like this in the fossil records.
I read the 'trunk'/'stem' of some large species has reached several hundred feet.
biggest fossil found is around 130 feet in length, around half the size of the Statue of Liberty
The biggest one found was literally 130 feet, with the largest squid to be found was 40 and most whales being under just 100ft. Those things are nightmare fuel
@@mangood2734 they’re the perfect rendition of a biblically accurate angel one can find in nature. Just picture one of these on fire with a multitude of eyes strewn across its entire body flying through the air and you’d understand why they always announce themselves with the phrase be not afraid
Oh to be a shrimp drifting thru the ocean on my feather starfish
It's not a starfish :)
@@TheEchelon they are very closely related to starfish.

So amazing to see Feather Stars mobile! We were lucky enough to catch some footage of one around the coral gardens of the Great Barrier Reef around the Frankland Islands!
We know aliens exist. They have to. But why are we focused on space?
THE OCEANS HAVE EVERYTHING WE NEED!
I know. The search for "life on other worlds" is the most moronic, short-sighted and wasteful activity I've ever witnessed . . . there is more life in a thimbleful of seawater than has been found ANYWHERE beyond the orbit of the International Space Station.
Why people want to discover aliens when humanity is DESTROYING entire species of living things every single day-including ones we don't even know existed-is yet another glaring example of the extreme stupidity and blinkered shortsightedness of human beings . . . I'm just so glad to know that in geologic terms, the stain of human civilization will have mercifully wiped itself from the planet within a couple of thousand years of my death; it's a virtual certainty.
Too bad it has to take amazing creatures like these ones with it.
@@kamakirinoko Harsh but true. Although, if intelligent life is ever discovered or made contact with, perhaps they can share way for us to make things better.
I think both are important
Noora نورة Agreed. It doesn’t need to be a competition. Both fields of study can even benefit one another, like learning how life thrives in extreme environments on our planet helps us understand where/how alien life might exist.
Water is mostly spacial to the sea creatures, then it doubles as space and matter to us, but mostly we register it as material because we breathe air and cannot live in the water.
Water is spacial to certain creatures because it's a place that life can live.
On the other hand, we have evolved out of the water and began living in the gas space that we call 'air'. Suppose we're looking at transcending this realm and evolving? If you think about it, if a person was to be in outer space without gear, all of the gas would escape the body, right? Well, I guess that the vacuum of space has different rules for handling matter and space; by leaving Earth, you head to the realm where you witness different laws in the processing of space and matter.
These creatures move so gracefully! What a beautiful creature it is! 😊😊
Terrifyingly beautiful…
The feather star is like the Netflix account someone owns and all their friends leech off of it
The movement and colors of the feather star is definitely sight to see!
It looks like a biblicaly accurate angel
Never thought about this before 🤔
No, It doesn't. I hate this reddit meme
@@zekeiwa5837 it's not a reddit meme tho, biblical accurate angels are these terrifying things that are basically just rings of floating eyes, they're basically just angels but on top of the angel chain
BE NOT AFRAID
Lol I thought this same thing
I am a commercial fisherman from CA, we have caught these off and on for years and I was always curious what they were.. they come out of the water moving all over and dropping limbs for defense.
I'm sure someone in Asia has eaten one by now lmao
They ain't dropping nothing for defence.
More underwater organisms I'm relaxed thank you
That is the most amazing living thing I have ever seen
Does anyone know the name of the song that plays during the video? It was really relaxing.

Oh, it’s so cute! What a gorgeous creature…
They look like weird tarantulas
They look so cool when they're on the move like that.
The infestors are incredible. I still don't understand how these animals, clearly without our precise human vision for colors, adapt to the right colore tone
Absolutely fascinating. Amazing to see
Honestly stunning!! Nature is awesome!!!
This is so cool The more you know
This is a solid "Be Not Afraid" moment.
Other than that, i find feather stars rather fascinating even though they look like something you would see in an alien movie.
Thanks to all researchers 🙏🙏🙏

Спасибо за ролик, ни разу не видела такое существо. Мне понравилась коматулида!!! Очень изящная, прозрачная, как снежинка!!! А такое большое разнообразие удивляет!!! В изобретательности и фантазии надо отдать должное Творцу! "Достоин Иегова, наш Бог, принять славу, честь и силу, потому что ты сотворил всё и всё по твоей воле существует и сотворено" (Откровение 4:11). are these things dangerous? do they sting? and if they do, how potent/fatal is it?
I don’t think they do. According to Google, they are harmless and can be touched by people. In the Little Mermaid Live Action Remake Trailer, you can see them dancing with Ariel along with the Flying Gurnards.
Idk how, but it's adorable...

TFW too many arms
I'm 34 years old today i found out about this watching a Daily Dose of Internet video from 2 years ago. Wow what an amazing creature
Fabulous
I never knew this thing existed
This thing is mentioned in 11th class book
Amazing marine life.
Considering how deliberately and with such high coordination it moves the arms, I think I'd be interested in a video all about their nervous system. Definitely not advanced enough to be called a proper brain but still pretty impressive
So this species can be found in Philippines?
This looks like a minion that an end game boss sends at you
