- A celebration of an artist’s life in the purest sense, Ryuichi Sakamoto | Opus is the definitive swan song of one of the world’s greatest musicians. In late 2022, as a parting gift, Ryuichi Sakamoto mustered all of his energy to leave us with one final performance: a concert film featuring just him and his piano. Curated and sequenced by Sakamoto himself, the twenty pieces featured in the film wordlessly narrate his life through his wide-ranging oeuvre. The selection spans his entire career, from his pop-star period with Yellow Magic Orchestra and his magnificent scores for filmmaker Bernardo Bertolucci to his meditative final album,12. Intimately filmed in a space he knew well and surrounded by his most trusted collaborators, including director Neo Sora, his son, Sakamoto bares his soul through his exquisitely haunting melodies, knowing this was the last time he would be able to present his art.
Opens in select cities 3/15
I hate cancer. It takes away so many beautiful souls. Rest in Peace, Mr. Sakamoto.
Forreal.. I miss him sm
But he like ciggarets
On the plus side it takes away evil souls too
iam feeling with you... but guys.... let us go now with the energy flow...
The greatest concert film I've ever seen. The whole theater sat in rapt silence until the final black screen post credits. Never seen that before. Truly stunning.
Same thing yesterday night in a little theatre in Italy. A perfect silence...I tried not to disturb it with my tears. At the end a great applause.
I'm here outside the theater in Fiesole, on a bench blowing my nose. I just went to see Ryuichi Sakamoto's film Testament. A terminally ill man who nevertheless exudes joy from his hands on his piano. My husband didn't come because he would have fallen asleep, my son said that lately he has discovered that Sakamoto helps him sleep, a girl at the theater in front of me was asleep... I don't find anything wrong with it. If someone with their music helps you forget about your problems and makes you relax to the point of being able to sleep, they are giving you a wonderful gift. However, he gave me a wonderful emotion, I never managed to see him live but even if he is dead his magic is not.
Maestro Sakamoto, the world is not the same without you 😢❤miss you
Seeing this on Monday. Not ready to say goodbye but I guess it's time. Thank you Sakamoto Sensei
I can't wait to see this movie. While I've known of his music, I didn't know him so I have lots of catching up to do. May he Rest in Peace.
Watching this film was like saying goodbye to a beloved longtime friend. I wept. So exquisite and touching.
Rest Easy Sakamoto-San.
Maestro Sakamoto inspired me in so many ways with his masterpieces..
Thank you ever so much Mr. Sakamoto. Rest in Peace.

Hi Janus Films, is there any way I could purchase the movie (I am in Canada and it is only playing in US Cinemas as far as I know), thanks!
If you live in the Ottawa area it's playing at The Bytowne Cinema on April 6-8 (2024).
I don't know in which part of Canada you are, I am in Toronto and tomorrow I'm going to see it!!! .Discovered it just in time since this is the last week it's playing! I read it played in some other cities as well.
@@ananicolaas4558Have a great time! I am in Québec City
It's on Netflix?
Did they mention how he worked with Yukiko Okada and wrote the music for her song Kuchibiru Network? Did he perform the music for that song in this movie?
Wild Palms 1993
How/where can you watch this?
In select theatres. I am not sure what city or state you're in, but maybe look at some of the smaller independent theatres near you? We're only going to have two showings of it here in Oregon, so I don't think it'll be wide spread ⚇
I watched it yesterday and was emotional when watching how concentrated Maestro Sakamoto was contributing to his last performance, despite his poor health. His will was just unbeatable!! Respect and rest in peace.
Years ago I was delightfully struck by his piece "Rain", and my perception of contemporary piano changed forever....thank you , Maestro....
The Last Emperor Soundtrack changed my life.
I watch this today, only me and two other people in the movie theatre all sat in dead scilence, What a performance of a lifetime, absolutely beautiful.
spoiler ahead.
When he played Opus at the end, then the piano continue the playing by itself, it made me tear up, He is gone but his music lives forever, RIP Ryuichi Sakamoto.
I am 60 yrs old and just caught this last performance. And I was not familiar with his music. But I saw this, and am listening again and discovering for the first time. His music moves me, as it does for so many. Thank you Master, for this opportunity. A very low bow for you…..
I've been loving his musical work since 20 years ago. They're all beautiful and full of emotional depth.

RIP. He died a year after my mother died of cancer.
I'm studying two of his pieces right now. So amazingly beautiful masterpieces he has written. I heard about him and his music in the 80' and bought an import CD back than. Recently I heard of his passing...🙏🏼😔🙏🏼 RIP Mr. Sakamoto and thank you for your beautiful legacy. I will keep playing your music to keep your legacy alive so we will never forget you ! 🙏🏼✨🙏🏼

cant believe i just missed this in theaters :(
The best pianist of our times.
0:55 I love Ryuichi Sakamoto as much as the next fan, but “He conjured emotions we don’t yet have names for” is hyperbolic nonsense. . .
