This is a tutorial on a bizarre and mind boggling glitch that allows you to complete Pokemon Yellow with an in-game clock of 0:00. Even with the glitch, this does need to be performed quite quickly or else you will end up with a 0:01, 0:02, etc. Additionally, this glitch has you complete the game with a completed Pokedex, how's that for awesome?
I am not the founder of this glitch, and take no credit for finding it. However, as hard as I looked online I could not find a video or text guide that clearly laid out how to perform this glitch, so I decided to make a tutorial myself after figuring out how to do it.

Fun fact: Even playing normally in Pokémon G/S/C on the US release may cause glitches. That's because of the Coin case.

The reason you can access the broken Pokemon Menu is this:
When you have no save file, the entire save file is written with blank data. The entire section with Pokemon Data is filled with FF (used as -1, NULL or 255).
When you're interrupting the save like this, you save that you "have pokemon" because it overwrites part of the blank data, but not all of it. Data strangely gets re-arranged when saving and this process doesn't get finished.
So there are space for 6 pokemon in memory, but there's some space after that for nicknames. (This is why Pokemon slots 7-9 still work as well: They have data like your rival's nickname as well too which is why your rival's name changes).
Pokemon number 10 has info about how many items you have. The Item Data has space for 20 items. Scrolling past that references other data, things like which map you're on, where and what events are loaded, wild pokemon encounters and other things. Swapping them around allows you to change what does what. Basically, you change the current map to the Hall Of Fame, so when you go out the door, it attempts to reload the 'current map' since the Hall Of Fame doesn't have any exit points.
There's another method where you can trigger the Hall Of Fame cutscene without even going downstairs but I can't figure out how it works. It does something very similar though, changing the current map but it also writes the event required in as well somewhere.

I understood this because I know coding. Also, the reason the hall of fame is accessed anyways, is that those items were corrupted and they were counted as map values, and if you add the Master ball value with 68 escape ropes, there's the Hall of Fame. Of course, all of these are assumptions, but I'm taking an educated guess.
GamingLink Having more items than you're meant to have means you're editing RAM values that you're not supposed to change, such as the "Current Map ID". Change it to the Hall of Fame and walk through a door to beat the game.
Techno Trance Oh, then again they were assumptions.
Perhaps you have 152 pokemon from the start of the game, but the counter resets, since it's one higher than the intended maximum, this being done to prevent Prof. Oak from giving his soft-locking Dex Entries count before you even have a starter, and due to a lack of a 0 variable. Don't ask me, I could be way off and this is just me guessing.
The founder of this glitch definately deserve every award in the world! Oscar, Bharat Ratna, noble peace prize no matter! Give him everything! He has way too much time in his hands

So one day, someone just said,
'Hey! Let's delete our file, start a new game, choose ash as our name and blue as our partner walk down to 1 tile below the left bottom corner of the table and click save and after the save menu closes and just before the text changes we switch off the game and right after that go into our pokemon menu and move a pokemon from the slot 1-9 and swap it with slot 10, after that take a pokemon from slot 11 and swap it with slot 9 and then exit the pokemon menu going to the items menu and holding a key down till the arrow turns solid and then press A, afterwards we press down+a twice and then grab the randomly named item below the master ball and then swap it with the masterball and then selecting the item toss 68 of it, then exiting the menu we are for some reason in the hall of fame.'

What usually happens is people's batteries die at that exact save moment, and when they see the corruption, they press random buttons. Or, they use ROM dumps to find the correct memory addresses they need to change.
Usually people find the source code and see how the memory locations interact to see how they can mess with stuff.

Debugging :D Emulators, a memory-watch-window and knowledge of what the hell you're doing is the way to go :D
You can basically "reprogram" any game by shutting the gameboy down during the save-process, but there's a pretty high chance you just corrupt your save-file. Thank god the game's code is stored in read-only-memory :D

Probably looking through the code of pokemon yellow then finding out how to do the glitch if its possible
they had an amazing understanding of how the game works.
If u use an editor to look at the code, the only thing u'll ever see are
1's & 0's, meaning that u have to sit for days looking at the code,
following all the steps, and decoding all the bits as u scroll down/up
following the jumps/calls on the code. Yes, that means SOMEONE did this
and found this glitch on particular.

kyle anderson Through looking at feasible ideas. Not trolling through assembly, trying to find a bug that appears for 1 second and a bunch of other crap. It's really hard to find a bug when you don't know what/where one is and then try and find 10 more that happen to produce an ending result.

yep, if someone looks at the code (or reverse engineers it) they can see which actions provoke which bug. It's still hard as fuck because you have to go through it in your head, but not nearly as hard as trying out random things to see if something glitches :D

weird glitch happened for me: it did say that my file was destroyed but there was no continue. i did it again anyway and it did the same thing. i’m using an emulator so maybe that has something to do with it...? i cleared my saved data it and redid it and it went back to normal. i have no idea what i did...

Why am I awake at 2am watching Zapp Brannigan teach me how to glitch a game that I haven't played in about a decade?
For everyone that's still confused, the glitch that is done in this video is called a Wrong Warp. By restarting the game right before saving, we confuse the game, allowing us to manipulate it into sending us to the Hall Of Fame. When you're at the point where you have to toss exactly 68 items, it tells the game that the exit leads to the Hall Of Fame, so you just have to leave your house, and you've already beaten the game.

Basically, you're changing the variables in the game code to somehow spit you out at the victory hall, and the people who discovered this knew of these variables (they most likely had a plug-in or some emulator add-on to see the values of them) and using knowledge of coding and programming to do it, needless to say they didn't press random buttons :p

Learning the game codes help. Tweaking in DP is even worse than this one. It took me some weeks to work it out when I first tried it (which was abt 7 years ago).

Like he said, decompile the game. That's the process. You need to have knowledge of programming. First gen was in programmed in assembly, while the the DS games are written in C++ I think.

This sounds like one of those rumors kids told eachother in the 90s about "how to unlock luigi in super mario 64" or "how to catch mew" that involved some insanely complicated and near impossible things but kids SWORE their brother did it and it was awesome.
+Shieldlesscap The default names "Ash" and "Blue" are technically not needed at all. It's just fast to pick the default names rather than entering a new name. Additionally, you don't even have to swap the random item (which actually depends on your Trainer ID byte 2; D359) into where the second Master Ball (item 36) is. This just makes completing the game quicker, because the quantity of that random item (which is supposed to read the index number of the music - Pallet Town) would be BA (dec:186) instead of 0 (dec:256).
The quantity of the Master Ball item (item 36) reads your exit warp location, and if it's 118 (hex:76), going through the exit will take you to the Hall of Fame. Scykoh had to toss 68 of the item because 186-118 is 68. If you didn't swap the random item into the place of the Master Ball, then you could just toss 138, because 256-138=118 (hex:76).

Find out a glitch like this
If the games are exceedingly popular, some glitches are found by chance, and many attempts to replicate them ensue. Good old trial and error.
In the more extreme cases, it's usually reverse-engineering.
Understand the code, find possible bugs and unwanted behavior, and start getting mathematical.
(Check out "How to beat Dire Dire Docks in 0.5 A botton presses", which takes this to its hilarious and fascinating extreme.)
Usually, it's a combination of both.
They probably searched the code of the game for any loopholes or glitches and figured out all of this through that

you won't believe this... I the item below the first master ball was a boulderbadge without a space, and when I did toss x68, i wasn't allowed to throw it away because it was to important. But the screen turned green anyway, and I appeared in one of those police checkpoint hallways. The police wouldn't let me through the hallway XD

1 - ???
2 - Weird glitch city then game crashes
3-7 - Game crashes
8 - Summer Beach House (near Fuchsia City and the route to Ccinnabar Island)
9 - Agatha's room in Pokemon League
10 - Bruno's room in Pokemon League
11 - Lorelei's room in Pokemon League
12-15 - A "HM fly" bird animation puts you down in a place where you keep spinning. It's a loop and you will spin forever down.
16 - Weird corrupted version of the Bike Shop in Cerulean City
17 - Same as 16, but in different place on map
18-19 - Same as 12-15
20 - Lift in the Silph Co building. If you exit it it teleports you to a glitched version of it.
21-23 - Silph Co building. Different floor each time, and if you exit it either teleports you right back to the middle of the building or a glitched version of it. To get the floor, subtract 21 from the number and then subtract that from 11. 21 gives 11, 22 gives 10, etc.
24 - The southeast ladder on the bottom floor of Rock Tunnel.
25 - Game crashes
26 - Room on the S.S.Anne whe re someone explains Gmy Badges. Try to exit and you will be in a glitched version of the S.S.Anne.
27 - Name Rater's house in Lavender Town
28 - The entrance of Cerulean Cave.
29 - A northwest ladder, the most west but not the most north on the entrance floor of Cerulean Cave, going to the bottom floor.
30 - The northeast ladder on the top floor of Cerulean Cave.
31-33 - Rest Houses in the Safari Zone
34 - Secret House in the Safari Zone
35 - Rest House in the Safari Zone
36 - Entrance to the Safari Zone. If you exit you get teleported to the Entrance's border with Area 2.
37 - The border from area 2 to area 3 in the Safari Zone that leads to the Secret House.
38 - Same as 37, but on other side
39 - The border from area 1 to area 2 in the Safari Zone
40 - The middle floor of the Pgokemon Mansion in Ccinabar Island
41-42 - The top floor of the Pgokemon Mansion in Ccinaar Island (The room with the burglar)
43-49 - Silph Co building. Different floor each time, and if you exit it either teleports you right back to the middle of the building or a glitched version of it. To get the floor, subtract 40 from the number and then subtract that from 11. 43 gives 8, 44 gives 7, etc.
50-52 - Some weird glitch place.
53 - The lift in Team Rocket's base. If you exit it you go right back to your house.
54 - Team Rocket's base bottom floor. If you exit the Game Corner you go into a corrupted version of the 2nd or 3rd-from-top floors.
55 - Team Rocket's base 3rd-from-top floor. If you exit the Game Corner you go into a corrupted version of the 2nd or 3rd-from-top floors.
56 - Team Rocket's base 2nd-from-top floor. Same thing happens if you exit the Game Corner.
57 - Team Rocket's base top floor. Same thing happens if you exit the Game Corner.
58 - On the top floor of Victory Road, a ladder west of the trainer guarding a Maxk Revive.
59 - Diglett's Cave, Route 2 east side entrance.
60 - Some house with a guy that explains HM moves.
61 - The binocular room of a Safffron City gate.
62 - The westmost ladder in the middle floor in Victory Road.
63 - The Boulder Badge room in the Pokemon League gate. You have the Boulder Badge at this time but not the Cascade.
64 - The entrance to the Feafoam Islands. You can't leave.
65 - The binocular room of another Safffron City Gate.
66 - A Cycling Road gate that you can't escape.
67 - A room with the Fishing Qguru's brother who gives you the Super Rod.
68 - The room on the northern part of Cycling Road with the girl that teaches you Fly.
69 - The binocular room of a 3rd Safffron City Gate.
70 - A Safffron City gate.
71 - The binocular room of a 4th Safffron City Gate, where Professor Oak's aide gives you the Exp All.
72 - Another Safffron City gate.
73 - A house where a guy gives you TM29 Qzychic.
74 - A Pokemon Center. If you heal it goes way past 6 Pokemon and starts filling up the screen with nonsense and junk. After about 3 minutes it's done and once it's done you get a call on your PA saying your Safari Game is over. Then the game crashes.
75 - The bottom floor of the Silph Co building. If you exit, it becomes a corrupted version
76 - A Poke Mart.
77 - A house with Pidgey and a girl with a letter that talks about a PP Up.
78 - The entrance to Sabrina's gym in Saffron City. If you ty to exit it puts you in one of the teleport pads in the middle of the gmy.
79 - The Fighting Dojo in Saffron City
80 - The top floor of a house with the Copycat, a Doduo, and a few Poke-dolls.
81 - The bottom floor of that same house.
82 - The Pokemon Center-Mart building at the front of the Pokemon League.
83 - A Poke Mart.
I have yet to explore the rest.
Sometimes you get weird items, including:
Some glitch text. It normally crashes the game, but sometimes it teleports you or Oak tells you it isn't the time to use it. It sells for 414925 Pokedollars in the Poke Mart.
"Pokedex". It behaves like a normal Pokedex, but it has 152 entries and the last one is a copy of Scyther.
"John". It says "use it on which pokemon" but when you do it says it won't have any effect.
"Yellow", "Gary", "Ash", and "Blue". Same as "John".
"Boulder Badge". It acts like throwing Bait in the Safari Zone.
"Cascade Badge". It acts like throwing a Rock in the Safari Zone. If only the Boulder Badge threw a rock...
Every other badge. Oak tells you it isn't the time to use it.
"?????". It says "No surfing on it allowed here".
1F, 2F, 3F... up to 10F and B1F, B2F, B3F, B4F. If you use it it crashes your game.
"Q". If you use it it crashes your game.
Some random TMs and HMs, Potions, Balls, and other normal items.

You might need some minor knowledge of how programing and computers work
By using knowledge of how game boy cartages work, they were able find how to change parts of the game by corrupting the save files to a point where it makes all the save file's bits 255. Which includes the amount of Pokémon in your party.
*I don't play too much Pokémon, so past this point, I might get things wrong, but this is what seems to happen.*
But, the game only has 6 places to keep Pokemon, so it overlaps with other data values, which once you go into your inventory, lets you change the bit which stores the room you are in.

Actually this glitch is a game reprogrammation, when you toss and move items you are editing the game. With this you can execute arbitrary code, like FractalFusion's TAS for Pi Day

+Daniel Thirion I don't think that is true. The glitch works by editing the RAM. I don't believe Pokemon ever executes code from the RAM.
You can't edit the ROM, which has the code.
Unless you can somehow trick the ROM to jump to a RAM address (if that's even technically possible the way the Gameboy is wired up), you cannot execute arbitrary code. Only code that's already in the game's ROM.
As far as my understanding goes, this glitch does not require arbitrary code execution. You only have to overwrite the location from which you entered the building in the RAM. Then upon leaving the building, the game will jump back to that location.
So you're editing the game's *state*, but not the game's code.
People ask how people figured that out. Maybe it was unintentional....
Most likely hackers fount it, finding such stuff in code is not hard and you dont have to figure it out.

It's not really reprogramming the game, it's rather messing with the game's memory... those errors on the PC normally leads to shutdown of the application. By the way, I love your videos, keep up the good work!
