- In early February, the Diamond Princess cruise ship was quarantined off the coast of Yokohama, Japan. Hundreds of passengers ultimately tested positive for the disease.
It will be a Hollywood movie by the end of the decade.

The Diamond Princess set sail Jan 20, before the virus was too well known. It's not the passengers' responsibility to watch out for disease and I don't blame them for going on their long-planned vacations at the time
Honestly no excuse not to know what's going on with basically mini computers in your pocket (phone). I think it's insane people who still travel because they've had a trip planned. Get over it! There's a worldwide virus killing people so probably a good reason to not go on the trip.

MY husband REFUSES to go on a cruise ship at ANY time. He says they have thousands of people mashed together in one area, on the ocean, everybody touching everything and the food sitting out there and we have no clue how clean the crew is, since many come from 3rd world countries. They work on these cruises since that is the most money they have ever seen. Many do NOT wash their hands after going to the bathroom. Clean water were they come from is scarce. I wanted to take an Alaskan cruise but I would have to go on my own. Of course, right now, there is no way I would go!
@chima chibi --LOL yes he is and he carries a small bottle of hand sanitizer everywhere he goes. He has seen to many guys at work going to the bathroom, do NUMBER 2 and walk right out. Wonder what CDC is going to do this time. According to the report, the Japanese government initially proposed the early disembarkation of American passengers and return home, but the US government expressed appreciation for the Japanese side's response and discussed it with CDC . "It is expected that the risk of infection will increase if passengers are disembarked and moved to Yokota Air Base, etc. The ship is in good hygiene and should be kept on board."

Leave them on there! If they get off, they'll go back home immediately and harm/infect others. I don't trust self-quarantines. If you pose a risk to yourself/others as in suicide, you're immediately locked in a hospital. This is NO different. Don't let them dock!
Watching this 3 years later really puts things in context. It had been spreading freely for months, but there weren't tests.
So, there were 4000 people contained on the ship, more than 80% of the passengers were 60 or older, they run out of medicines, and - only six individuals over the age of 80 died.
Probably with pre-existing conditions, as is the case in 95% of the covid-related deaths.
Their causes of death were never reported.
Add the duress, with the media spteading fear-mongering propaganda that must have been stressful, unless data were provided. Or one can deduct by himself.

Out of the 4000 some 700 were even infected. Just six deaths under those conditions in that population.
The only logical conclusion which can be drawn from this incident, in February 2020, is that this coronavirus is no more harmful than the previous ones. And less dangerous than some of most influenzas.

Why did these ships take in passengers knowing there’s a virus out here? Money
Ships, airplanes, restaurants, schools, public rallies or any high traffic locations are high risk areas to be infected. Plus we are still learning about this virus so the health protocol is still being defined.

After corona virus occur in Diamond Princess, Japanese government asked Diamond Princess that Japanese Self Defense team would serve for quarantined guests instead of cruise staff to prevent more spreading virus inside of the ship during quarantining time.
However that request was declined by the ship captain because they want to keep service level as usual. The cruise run by American company, the Ship belong to England, law situations were complicated so I read. And there were no appropriate institutions available for quarantining 3500 people. Probably new international law would be needed for this global outbreak.
People thinking a cruise ship is a death trap but this virus appears to be airborne. Of course they’re not gonna tell you this so there’d be instant uproar and fear. Nobody would go to work.

People, washing hands ALONE IS NOT the answer 100%. Especially if chapped, that's a direct entry into the body! Answer: Stop touching your face! Or any mucus membrane : eyes ears, nose, mouth and private areas. That's how infectious disease workers have protected themselves and family for decades! It will give you the added protection that hand washing just can give you, alone.

4 years later I remember being in current events class being the first one bringing up an article about this in February before many knew anything about what was happening.
So when Diamond princess docked at the port in Japan, people were saying Japan should get people out and find the proper facilities to isolate them. Everybody knows this is common sense, but how can you do that when you have 3000+ people?? It was easy to criticise Japan, but I hope now American people know what Japan was facing.
Or they could just call other countries to pick up their citizens?

I think that's what they did in the end. But from early stage, there was an idea of moving American citizens to US bases, but CDC suggested it's safer on cruise, hence what happened.

I am sad for those quarantined on ships. I love to cruise but can imagine being stuck in my tiny cabin without the ability to do anything. However, as a mother, grandmother wife, daughter and American I would want to be quarantined to protect other Americans. These passengers are American heroes. Thank you for your courage and bravery. This is part of the reason why I make vacation plans last minute. You never know what the circumstances will be if you book a vacation so far in advance. I’ve been planning to go to Europe (including Italy) in mid-May and was going to finalize purchases one month before in April but will definitely not do that if the virus persists. Sucks for those who can’t get refunds for canceling their trips last minute.
As a nurse whose been in clinical practice settings with necessary quarantine, my fear is that it’s doing these people far worse than any good to be shut into these cabin rooms. Reason being is for quarantines to be effective, and actually contain the bad particles, there usually is a negative air system in place. In other words, if the ventilation system for EACH ROOM was not previously set up for a quarantine situation, these poor people are only infecting each other.
Human rights should be respected. Release all the passengers!

This is just completely messed-up. What if people have events to attend like chemotherapy or court? Covid 19 is on mainland ANYWAY, so how long are you going to quarantine the ship? Till the disease disappears from the ship? If passengers keep passing it along this is obviously going to take forever.

I would worry about the food preparers. I am too scared to go on a cruise ship. And that’s before this virus. Glad John got to go home. Sweet couple. Praying for everyone else. I have a rare autoimmune disease and I don’t fly on airplanes but could there be a way to keep the higher at rick people in a separate area if they need to fly. Like me someone on chemo and embral or people on other biologic medication that lowers the immune system. Just wondering. I know with our world so fast paced and family living apart some people have to travel by airplane. This is very troubling. We have a trip planned but will be traveling by car. There is no medical cure for the virus, but provided the person survives the symptoms, which can be possible with medical support, eventually their own immune system will fight the virus and kill it. They don't release them from the hospital until no virus can be detected in the blood, meaning they are no longer contagious.

They just treat the symptoms instead of the actual virus. This includes making sure the patient's fever doesn't get too high, making sure the patient gets enough fluids, and respiratory support if they are having trouble breathing. Some patients do not show serious symptoms and do not need to be hospitalized so they are sent home to self-quarantine. Most of the people getting this virus are recovering. When you have a virus, you recover when your immune system manages to kill enough of the virus that it can no longer make you sick or have symptoms. At that point, you are also usually no longer contagious. As for the virus not being strong or dangerous, well of course it is. In certain patients. The fatality rate for COVID-19 seems to be somewhere between 2-4%. In comparison, the fatality rate for the flu is about .01%, and it kills hundreds of thousands of people every year. So people shouldn't panic, but this virus should be taken very seriously. On the other hand, it is completely possible for people to contract the virus, recover, and then no longer be contagious.
