Inside the Luthier's Shop with BigDGuitars.com. I have gotten this request a few times and finally found a piece of wood that was figured enough to get this to look right.

I've just been experimenting on some veneers before starting on my guitar. So far I've found using keda dyes that a heavy red first coat, sanded back followed by a bleuy-green teal colour seems to give very good results. The blue in the teal mixes with the red and creates the purple and blue dark bits; and the greeney teal picks out the highlights.

Looks great, however, I've seen a pink (diluted red) base, sand back, then lay down a diluted (1:10ish) blue. Looks amazing on a quilt or flame. I have a swamp ash body coming and was going to try this on that (no veneer, but hoping for cool result anyway).
how do you think this would look with a black limba body with a 5a flame maple cap?
IMO PRS first use alcohol based red sands it back then a deep blue solvent based , followed by a light touch of pink which brings out the purple.

I think there is a video now somewhere where the private stock guy show techniques and I think I remember he mentioned they do a pink'ish color over violett to get northern light - seems the blue get's out by some wonders with the color/strain of the woods

Would it be possible to make red and blue burst by having the red on the base and the blue on top? Or could you put blue on the outside and have it work into red like a prs violet blueburst finish? Great video and love these stain videos
PRS also uses blue over light red, not blue over purple for more difference in contrast.
You said the dye sucked up quickly in the wood, what type of poor filler or sealer did you use, if any at all?
What grit did you sand the bare wood to before applying your first coat of stain?
Should I and back the sanding sealer before adding finish?
Awesome! Would've been cool to add a scraped binding to set off that top. But that color is perfect!
I had that thought. I have the expensive quilted top coming with faux binding.

@@bigdguitars I just got a kit and it is ASH. I would love to raise/open the grain, stain it black and then dye it purple (sort of like the one you are showing). What is the best method to raise/open the grain so the dye can get in there and then I sand?
BigD, have learned a ton from you in the past week. Thanks for posting your videos. I"m curious, would you recommend finishing this color with Tru Oil or would it change the color too much?
you need to seal it with sanding sealer. Once you do that you can use tru-oil. tru-oil alone will pickup some color.

Hello! I wanted to ask how much dye you used, I want to buy this for my prs build too but I dont know if 100ml is enough, especially 'cause you said, that it sucked the dye like a sponge. Thanks for this Video man!
have you tried wet sanding the dye straight into the ash? worked great for me, and helped fill the grain.
I will be doing an oil back and will do that for sure.
You need to rethink your application technique I have learned PRS use water based dyes to get their glorious colors !
No disrespect, why not utilize more wood grain strokes as you finish up with each cycle of stain on?? I have watched almost all of your videos and you use mostly randomized strokes. Love your results and have picked up good tips watching your videos.
i used to have a 70s fender telecaster . do you use a 2.5 inch flush trim bit in a router with a template to make this body? i'm thinking of trying it out, sometime. i recently purchased one of those bits. bearings on each end of the cutting blade that cuts 2.5 inchs .i think it would do the job
Mohawk and Behlens make great woodworking products. I make walking sticks and do gun stock refinishing, love Behlens for their dyes.

I thought I had enough to get at least 2, but I used them all for that one. I have to order more tops!

Yet another great video. PRS showed a demo of northern lights being applied to a guitar recently and they also used a deep pink color along with the blue and purple.

Question,,,, when you sanded the purple down with 320 grit sandpaper before apply the blue did you jump to a 220 or any size or did you apply the blue after using 320 grit? Thanks
I used 320 grit to pull color out. I try to avoid the 220 it can scratch.

BigDGuitars yeah I’m having trouble with the blue taking to the wood after using 320 grit since it’s so smooth and fine. Might have to slight pass over with the 220 grit lightly.
Lyric Klein make sure your sanding disc is clean. That might be it too

what if you used the turquoise over the purple? would it discolor the purple?
I've actually tried this. It worked out great. Will only discolor the purple if you put on too much. I haven't sprayed it yet with nitro/poly, but it should look even better after I do.
I was always told don't mix mixers so I didn't know if it would mud up
I don't like mixing colors I like using them straight from the bottle
I have noticed with the angelus colors you don't need that much at times.
***** I just did mine in Angelus and you're correct I may have wet my rag twice/three times the entire time. It goes a very long way
