Runrig are a Scottish band formed in Syke in 1973 by brothers Calum and Rory MacDonald. Donnie Munro joined the following year and he became lead singer. This version of the song Loch Lomond was recorded in Balloch Park which of course stands on the bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond.

Runrig, the greatest band to come out of Scotland.
I love Runrig as I Scottish woman 🏴
😮..no really m8

As a former Scottish soldier from Balloch whose deceased mother went to this very concert while I was stationed in West Germany at the time, thank you, she would be proud.
A lot of history behind this song. A folk song turned beautifully into rock
🥰🥰
Had the honour of seeing RunRig live in concert 11 times, a brilliant Scottish Celtic band
I like Big Country!
Wolfstone is another great Scottish band...
Gaelic band.
I'm English but you have to give it to the Scots they really know how to do passion and patriotism
But not football
@CaptainDarrick l feel sorry for you
Damn I'm. Getting old 33 years ago I was the lighting engineer at that gig most amazing band and crowd EVER
I was there at the concert. AMAZING DAY❤❤❤❤❤
I was their at that concert at balloch 1991. Absolutely brilliant Runrig.
It doesn't get any better than this with young Scots singing along to a 250 year old Scottish song...the Scots love to celebrate their culture and one has only to look at the Tartan Army in Germany for evidence of that...
I can honestly say I was actually at that concert. Right next to Loch Lomond. Runrig at their peak. What an absolute blast that day was. Donnie Munro - wonderful singer live. 🏴
Wonderful! I´m really a bit jealous! ;-)
Others have explained a bit of the history behind the song. Second time I believe you have teared up at a Scottish song {Flower of Scotland}. It's not simply about the loss of true love as in one dead taking the low road and one alive on the high road, it's a metaphor for the Scottish people's love and pride for their country. It's a pride most nations have but particularly nations who are or were oppressed as Scotland is still today. It's based on an event in history but it's about the country, Scotland, the culture. A big virtual hug from bonny Scotland Island girl.
Who is oppressing Scotland today ?
As a Scotsman I'd prefer Scotland the Brave tae yon dirge Flower of Scotland or even Scots Wha Hae. 🏴
@@CaptainDarrickThat'll be they chancers at Westminster.
@@AreJayCee No, they are the government in power at the current time . But who is oppressing you and in what way ?
@@CaptainDarrick I was just surmising mate not putting forward an opinion.
The song is based on a letter written by a Scottish partiot who was arrested and sentenced to death by the english for refusing to give up his right to independence, the letter was his last to his wife in Scotland, I will be in Scotland before you is reference to his soul being in Scotland before the letter arrives to his loved one due to his execution.
Thought it was based on Scottish politicians racing round the country in Campervans and other ill-gotten vehicles.
It is basically a love story.
It's also the last song played at many Scottish weddings. Everyone, at least those who remain standing make a circle and hold hands, it's supposed to be a fun dance but can get pretty violent as everyone runs to the centre with their hands raised 😅
Aaahhh the auld scotmosh pit 🎉😂 ye canny whack the end of a real scottish weedin 😂
Scotland forever 🏴❤️🙌
beautiful, love how it touched you. cheers :D go Scotland! back yersels!
Was at the gig and it still hits the same today as it did 33years ago try going home our hearts of olden glory and book of golden stories
Broke my heart had ticket but started new job in London.
as I a Scot I know the reason for this song, it is about a Scottish Soldier about to be executed but remembering his time in Loch Lomand
His heart goes there before his body
That is close..
Yes you correct and it's just something you would love to see and be there again
Runrig are a fantastic live band they make me proud to be Scottish. Take care 😘🏴
This song is very popular at the end of wedding celebrations in Scotland where the bride & groom are serenaded by the guests in a circle. .Usually on fellow guests shoulders. I could listen to this for a long time, one of my favourite songs, and I'am Irish :)
The expression on your face is is priceless.
This song is traditionally the last song at Scottiah weddings, everyone from 8 to 98 will be up and dance.
Absolutely brilliant!
🥰🥰
These songs bring memories to everyone of us , of family friends and events in our memory, hits you in the ❤️ mon the Scotland 🏴
Thanks for showing this. I love Runrig. Going Home is another classic and I will have it played at my funeral
I think it was about scottish soldiers who were fighting against the English being taken to London to be executed, there families would travel down to London to say farewell, in scottish folklore they believed that once you die you your spirit returns to the land you were born in, but you travel there underground, the low road, and the families would obviously travel back to Scotland on the normal road, the high road
There's another Scottish group that goes by the name Skipinnish and they have a song called The Iolaire [that has one heck of a backstory to it] that I can't recommend enough.
Shout out to Michael, I have never heard this version before. Thank you
😍😍
This is the most popular and famous version here. This is the version that they play at the end of every wedding reception in Scotland to finish off the night
Ye need tae look up the whole gig it was a major stramash
Island Girl you may not quite know why you were tearing up but us Scots understand completely. Even without knowing the tale behind the song which others have beautifully described here, you FELT the emotions being conveyed and I appreciate you for it. As you coud see, this song is MASSIVE to us Scots. ❤🏴❤
it is an old Celtic belief that when a man dies in a foreign land his soul returns to his homeland by way of the low road. In 1845 two Scottish soldiers were made captive one of whom was to be set free the other executed. So it is the condemned man who must return to Scotland by way of the low road in death and so reach Loch Lomond before his friend who must travel the Earthly high road.
Spot on mate 🏴🏴🏴🏴🏴
The song is about 300 years old but you're best to google it. It involves Scottish history with England.
Hi Island girl another great song to check out of the very beautiful nation of Scotland is " Mull of Kintyre" by Wings and Paul McCartney.
glad you liked it i was there with 69.000 other fans
The song is about the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden. The Battle of Culloden took place on 16 April 1746, near Inverness in the Scottish Highlands. A Jacobite army under Charles Edward Stuart was decisively defeated by a British government force commanded by the Duke of Cumberland, thereby ending the Jacobite rising of 1745.
Thanks Peter for explaining it's to me🥰🥰
This still shapes Scotland, 3 sons in 1755 left Scotland with 500 sheep and a load of furniture. My 1 of the 3 started the colony in Falkland Islands. Another brother ended up in Canada the other went to Australia.i have amazing photos of Black Rock in Canada, the 1st aeroplane, Trokas in the snow a load of soldiersfrom WW1 with a mounty and Argentinian cattle rangelers. Amazing and very sad.
@@IslandGirlzHaveFlow05XBS two Scotsmen are captured and held somewhere in England. They are told one of them is to go back to Scotland, the other condemned to death, they have to decide which is which. Mental torture. The voice saying "I'll take the high road" is euphemistically saying he will stay and die, that's why he'll be in Scotland before the other guy, but he'll never meet his true love again on those bonnie banks of Loch Lomond. It's a poignant and emotional song, even though not so many people know what I just told you. It's probably why it had you tearing up as well, on a subconscious level. Nice reaction.
Duke of Cumberland was William Augustus brother of King George II known as Butcher Cumberland for his treatment of Highlanders after the battle. The flower Sweet William is known as Stinking Billy in Scotland. The town of Fort William also named after him is known as The Garrison (An Gearasdan) in Scots Gaelic.
Glad you finally got around to it, i sent you this last year lol. I know you get lots of requests and cant get to them all, so just happy you liked it. Go to a party night in Scotland 99% of the time this is last song of the night and gets everyone bouncing!
Awww @BrianMac1979 thanks for understanding and being so patient with me. Yes I really like it. Thank you 🥰🥰
@IslandGirlzHaveFlow05XBS don't worry darling, you won't get rid of me that easy...I'm a sweetie pie, regular shmegular.
Clan Chief MacGregor got hung in the Tower of London. The "low road". His wife took the high road, but they never met again.
not sure I saw an answer to your question but sorry if I missed one. The High Road is the road overland or the way living people must travel. The Low Road is the way of the dead. As he would be dead he was saying he'd be back in Scotland waiting for her when she got back.
Either this concert or Donnies Farewell at Stirling Castle was the Best ever.❤️🏴❤️🏴❤️🏴
I would love to see your reaction at Sunshine on Leith, sang by Hibernian fans, I have little doubt that you will enjoy it and bring tears to your eyes,

@@user-ob3ob2qr3o we are a wealthy country, but we spent more than we raise in taxes
Just look at Scotlands revenues and expenditure as a %age of our GDP and compare with these other countries

I'm afraid youre living in dream land!
BTW, I don't need to be an accountant to read Scotgovs own figures!
This gets me every time I'm away from Scotland, love it when played in pub clubs or parties and we all go mental
Thanks for another great reaction video
You just watch something that's out of this world from runrig in Scotland love it
Runrig the Best Band.❤️🏴❤️
The high road is life. The low road is death. Dude was sentenced to death by the english and his last words to his love are essentially "you will live, but i will die, and I'll be in scotland before you. I'll meet you there"
There's a link to another part of that gig and the drummer is Iain bayne
The song is from the point of view of the soldier who will be executed: When he sings, "ye'll tak' the high road and I'll tak' the low road" in effect he is saying that you will return alive, and I will return in spirit. (33y ago i was in Scotland and listened many times to this song - thx to YOU for making me think about what it means )
The meaning of the words:
It's told from the perspective of a Jacobite soldier condemned to death for taking part in Bonnie Prince Charlie's rebellion against the British crown. He's talking to his comrade in their cell on the night before he's to be put to death. His friend is not sentenced to death and will be released from prison.
"You take the high road, and I'll take the low". Taking the low road is a way of saying that you're dead and your spirit is returning to where it should be. "Taking the high road" means the condemned soldier's friend will be set free and, alive, and above ground.
"And I'll be in Scotland before you" means that the soldier's soul will immediately return to Scotland when he dies.
"Where me and my true love will never meet again by the bonnie bonnie banks of Loch Lomond" even though he believes his soul will return to Scotland, he'll never be able to spend another day with the woman he loves in the place they shared.
I was at this. It was a great day out and a few good bands played like Hothouse Flowers The Big Dish & Cappercallie
This song is a bit of an anthem for us Scottish people. The song is taken from a poem written by a guy who I think knows death is near. However, what. Makes the song great is its multi-layered. Read the lyrics and you decide what they mean. It’ll make sense. Scotland is home.
Hi Island girl, massive fan here. Runrig is more than this song. The band formed in 1973 to 2018. They retired in 2018. The band singer was Donnie Munro who joined in 1974 and left in 1997 to pursue a career in politics. In 1998, they found canadian singer Bruce Guthro to fill the void from 1998 to 2018. If he (Bruce) wasn;t found Runrig would had release In Search Of Angels , their 10th album, and do a farewell tour. Each singer brings something different to the table, and oten there's comparisons which the band (the true fans) doesn;t like which is about the music. In the video, the lead singer is Donnie Munro, on backing vocals, bass is Rory Macdonald, drums Iain Bayne, guitar, Malcolm Jones, percussion, Calum Macdoand; keyboard, Peter Whisart. The band sing in english and Gaelic (prononced Garlic), and sind about the landscape, the music, people. My first gig was in 2007 in Drumnadrochit, and it rained all day. The band would still play if the weather wasn;t nice. With reactions, I would start with the Donnie era from 1978 to 1997. React to Skye, from mod for rockers. Hope this helps
Sorry @Runrigfan but there is no letter R in Gaelic it`s pronounced GALIC and in Ireland it`s pronounced GAILIC.

You should try lisening to other songs by Runrig ( Going Home / Dance Called America / Every River / Hearts of Olden Glory / In Search Of Angels ) are just a few you must try
Think you should listen to Scotlands national anthem “ flower of Scotland “ that will tear you up.🏴🏴🏴🏴
The really interesting thing about this version is that several weeks after this concert, Michael Jackson played Scotland and got half the crowd.
Runrig were fabulous and sang some great Gaelic songs, but as a monitor engineer, Donnie was a nightmare because of the way he cupped the mic. This is a brilliant version of Loch Lomond. By the bonny banks. I'm lucky. I only live half an hour away from Balloch.
Alba gu brath. Saor Alba.
You should react to another Scottish band called Scheme and the song "Time" in particular and thnx for the vid and nice reaction , first time i've seen you mime to a song you were reacting to

How the hell did you pronounce Baloch right????? Amazing well done. Scottish people like me are extremely proud of our country and history. Alot of blood and guts were spilt our history bloody. My clan is the 3rd most massacred and my mums clan is the most massacred, we have a extremely raw nhistory.

Try Flower of the West, from the same concert. Also Running to the Light, which was the wake-up song for Laurel Clark, who was killed in the Challenger shuttle disaster.
The High Road is taken by the living and the dead take the Low Road

The song is about 2 Scottish soldiers about to be executed and they get a chance to go free. The 1 taking the low road has paths to walk, the other has to walk over hills and mountains thats why the low road is quicker. And he remembering loch lomond with his true love that has passed. That's what keeps him going..
Awe the Best fie Scotland. Hope that explains the song x

Two prisoners in Carlisle jail were awaiting execution, one was pardoned the other executed, the soon to be execuded soldier telling the tale his friend would take the high road and the other would have to take the low road of death, and he would be in Scotland before him.

The language in the middle is Sottish gaelic . The song refers to the clearances. There was an old thought that people would take a high road to heaven or a low road .. But you would meet your kin sooner or later...
