Emergency repotting elm pre bonsai from broken pot

  • The pot that my elm pre bonsai was growing in was damaged by winter freeze. So I'm performing an emergency repotting to move the elm pre bonsai from the broken pot.
    When using Bonsai pots that were not properly built for outdoor use we may find a freeze cracked pot (or even more) on our bonsai benches. If we don't attend to this problem the cracks can extend to the point that pieces start to break off and now we have a bonsai that sits in a broken pot. And this is certainly something to avoid as without the protection of the pot, the soil looses water faster and the roots may get exposed directly to wind (and sun).
    This winter I left an European elm (Ulmus laevis) in a papercrete pot out in the elements to test if it can take the winter freeze. By now you can already tell it didn't do too great. It had so many deep cracks that when I tried to pick up the pot it basically disintegrated. So I had to do an emergency repot to move my small European elm prebonsai to a safer pot even though it has already leafed out. The only thing left to decide was if a thorough repot can be performed or if slip potting is the only option. Since the roots have already started to grow I had to go with the slip pot option.

      Yes, at least some parts of the cat 🐱. I think she didn't know exactly where the camera was pointing.
      I'm hoping it does well in the new pot and that it will grow strong this year.

      Thanks! I also think the shape of the bowl is perfect for bonsai even if it's intended for kitchen use. I'm curious how it will do outside in the sun as plastic may degrade if it's not UV treated.
      As to the upgrade, I guess anything could be considered an upgrade when moving from a broken pot. 😁

    Thanks for the tip on using mesh tape in place of screen mesh! Sometimes covering those excessive holes in plastic plant pots does give me a headache…

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  3 роки тому

      The big holes in pots are generally a good idea as they allow for good drainage. However, soil will run out of larger holes so maybe the stores selling the pots should also provide the drainage screens for the big holes.
      Anyway, I'm glad you found the tip useful and hope it helps for future repots.

    Papercrete, the pot was doomed as soon as you left it out in the cold hahaha
    I was considering you keep that leader and remove the secondary shorter trunk and end up with a single trunk tree, so one stick in a pot haha

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  3 роки тому

      I was also a bit skeptical but what's interesting is that I left some other papercrete pots outside and they're fine. The difference is that some were considerably smaller while one big rectangular one had nothing planted in it. So I think the main cause for the pot failure was the lack of a reinforcement ring in the papercrete which made it break easily when the soil in the pot froze and expanded.
      The elm is a mess, LOL. I have no vision for it as a bonsai yet. Thanks for the idea, it's very possible that I will end up keeping only one of the trunks.

    • @MaybeBonsai
      @MaybeBonsai 3 роки тому

      @@OddBonsai I just thought that branch give that trunk good movement. More branches will grow on both trunks so I am sure options will present themselves next spring!

    • @MaybeBonsai
      @MaybeBonsai 3 роки тому

      @@OddBonsai not shouldn't, as there is no set way to do things. I would have kept that branch and removed the second trunk but that doesn't mean it is the better or worse, just a different opinion that's all. This is the best part about bonsai or art in general, there is no wrong or right hahaha

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  3 роки тому

      I understand now. Well if I would have thought of removing the smaller trunk I may have kept that leader.

    Nice job and tree! What did you use for the concrete pot? You could ask someone who works with constructions if there is some "easy to find" element to add to your mix, in order to make concrete more resistant to the cold environments. Especially traditional architecture is full of those tricks.

    • @OddBonsai

      The pot was made from papercrete: shredded paper + cement to which I added a reddish brown pigment.
      Papercrete has the advantage of being lighter than normal concrete but it appreas it is not suitable for exterior use.
      As I see it there were several problems.The first is the lack of reinforcement (a simple iron wire circle on the top and bottom). This would have prevented cracks from pressure cased by the expanding frozen soil inside the pot. The second is that I think that using paper in the mix is bad since paper is a great water absorbant and this increases the chance of developing cracks.

    • @RosarioCostanzo
      @RosarioCostanzo 3 роки тому +1

      @@OddBonsai you should create an internal armor to hold the cement and make it more resistant. You could add Marseille soap to the mix, it's a traditional method to make the concrete waterproof. But I don't know if it works with paper

    • @OddBonsai
      @OddBonsai  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, if I try to make future pots I will definitely add some reinforcement.
      It's the first time I've heard of the Marseille soap trick. I will read more on this. There are a lot of chemical additives for waterproofing cement which can be easily found in construction material stores.

    Im sorry for this, but paper doesnt belong in concrete because it is,sucking with water and expands by frost what leads to cracking

      For some uses I put Perlite into the outershell (Not inside-2 shells!!!)
      Which is sandblasted later,so the Perlite will be blasted out a little to get wholes in the surface👍👍👍
