Oh my, goodness, Thantk you Heather! I have to share this with you and the readers. I took our stepson to Maggie Valley on a long weekend vacation. His daddy had to work and the kid needed something. We were having lunch in a local restaurant when Popcorn pulled in, drivng his old truck. I ask my son if he would like to take a ride and he say yes. I siad I would ask. I asked a waitress and she asked Popcorn and he truned around to look at us and said yes. I guess he went by the way we looked. It is obvious we were from a city. He said he would bring Steven to our Motel. Steven was happy as can be. They had a great conversation and then Steven called me on the cell and said Popcorn would meet me at his junk store to buy one of his books. I met them there and actually thought, "What a dirty, junkie store". Popcorn bought out a book and I paid for it. As we were getting into our car, Popcorn said he would bring Steven to the Motel. and he did. He let us take pictures. He said my son was a very nice and respected young man and I thanked him. After a bit, he disappeared up in the mountains. Steven said he enjoy talking to him. When we looked at his book, we realized I let my son(stepson) ride with a Moonshiner. What will his father think and his mother? Steven did not care as he had fun and liked Popcorn. Steven was around 14-15 years old. He never told his mother and his dad had a good laugh about it. The only thing I did was blacked out Popcorn's chose words in the book and the F word was in it plenty. Thank you Heather for sharing this! I have pictures, but would have to go through a lot to find them. If I ever come across them I will share. I do not think Popcorn was a bad man as he was nice and enjoyable to talk to even with his chose of words.
Thank You Heather, I have watched and read about Popcorn but didn't know he was buried twice. He was a folk hero more about doing exactly what he wanted when he wanted. They say he made some good smooth shine.
I can't say he was/is a hero but a legend for sure. Sad that he did not remain buried next to his father where he wanted to be, everyone has the right to make that choice. May he RIP! Thank you for sharing his story, Heather.
Great job, Heather. He was a topic on several episodes of Moonshiners. You would have to say he did exactly what he wanted, how. He wanted, and when he wanted. According to some of my older relatives talking about other relatives and people like Mr. Popcorn, he would've been called "a contankerous old bastard." And I'd bet he would've agreed with. God bless y'all and stay safe doing these stories.
That was one tuff ole boy. All the feds wanted was the money end of it. That's all they ever want . Rest in peace Popcorn you will be remembered. Thank you Heather
Greetings from Jackson, Alabama. I love your videos. And thank you for all the hard work that y'all are doing. I would love to visit West Virginia someday.
My ex husband knew popcorn well. Still lives in Cocke County, in Cosby. And I'm sure they got along pretty well. Practically peas in a pod. 😊 just good Ole boys born in the wrong Era.
Very interesting person. So, some states will let you make your own moonshine, but for your own use only, and not for resale? Rest in peace Popcorn. 🙏 Thank you very much Heather, for a very interesting video. Have a great week ahead 😀
Popcorn was a true hillbilly I don't feel bootleggers ate criminals but I have heard he was abusive to his daughter and her aunt raised her because so not sure how much of that is true !
