- A look at the hobby of comics, (Overstreet's role in the market) and a ton of creators including Todd McFarlane, Murphy Anderson, Carl Barks, Harlan Ellison, Gil Kane, Jack 'King' Kirby, Stan 'The Man' Lee, Julius Schwartz, Scott McCloud, William Gaines, Nimjack artist (!?) Joe Quesada and much more. Lots of other folks too like Peter David (in a snippet from David vs. McFarlane at about the 48 or 49 minute mark) and there are even semi famous people in the background (like 'Malibu' from 90s sport-game show American Gladiators among others) and a great Vampirella....
Great stuff...
I wish i could go back in time to this convention. good ol days.
b4 COMics Conventions turned into some three-ring circus, Pop-Culture Façade
here are the true comic book people
I agree. Now in days all conventions are just filled with halloween costumes.
Very cool documentary. Thanks for posting. I wish I could've met Kirby before his passing. Without the King, there would be no comics as we know them today. It's unfortunate Todd ultimately turned out to be driven by money and greed more than anything else. Also, I wish Joey Q would have kept his sweet earrings and drawn Ninjak forever and never sat down in an editors chair.
Amen to Jack Kirby!
AHHhhh, The comic con...a geek's playground. Geek here and damn proud of it!
wow, look how young Joe Quesada looked in this.
hahahahaha - amazing fantasy #15 = 34.000 dollars. i should have bought a few back then. the last auction i heard of it was 780.000,- euro.
Great documentary! Amazing!
That Venom kid is awesome
It was shot during 1993 Comic-Con.
What is great about these documentaries is that the comic book legends were still alive talke about their contribution to the comic book field! Now most of them are sadly long gone but fortunately we still have their creations to enjoy each and every day so they have become immortal like their heroes! Only Stan Lee is the last surviving dinosaur of the bunch! Hopefully some producer will make a very indepth interview of his career spanning more than 70 years! Boy does he have stories to tell!
Such a Great video! There needs to be an update! I just checked and this was made in 1993
Ironically in 1994 the comic book industry imploded devastating the industry which lasted until the early 2000s.
great doc!!!! thank you!
Peter David so stomped Todd in that debate XD Annddd Todd went on to become the "man" a corperate figure himself XD
Very cool. Thanks for uploading it.
@CrashLanden The discussion between Todd McFarlane and Peter David took place in Comicfest '93, so it should have been made in 1993.
@flameape I think it was released in 1994. It was probably made in 1992 0r 1993 (Spawn #1 was released in May 1992... so somewhere in between then and 1994). Its production values (and narration) make it seem much older, I think.
Thank you very much for this upload
back when you asked anyone "what's your favorite comic book" and the answer was a tittle and not a damn movie and actor.
Amazing Fantasy #15 sold for $34,000 in 1994, today 2018-2019 would probably go for $375,000. Not bad for 24 years.
Stan Lee and Steve Ditko's passings this year, will probably drive the price even higher
One just sold for $800,000
This is what our world used to be,anyone trying to be cool would never want to be one of us at the time. These days it's totally trendy and being into comics is seen as a status symbol but back then you would only be part of this unless you absolutely loved it. People forget the stigma that went along with it at the time,I'm including myself in saying I still forgot just how nerdy we all were until I saw this
SO TRUE, back in high school...you couldn't be part of the "cool click" if you were into comics, if you weren't talking HIP HOP, SPORTS, GETTING LAID, AND THE NEWEST SNEAKERS...you were not cool. BUT, I take credit and so should every other comic geek in the world today...if it wasn't for us "geeks", we wouldn't have these great movies (and not so great) like THE AVENGERS, BATMAN V SUPERMAN, SPIDERMAN, IRON MAN...I could go on all day with these. Now go into a comic store today...regular people, I see guys in suits in my comic store, cute girls...it's suddenly become the "IT" thing, to be in comics. RISE GEEKS...WE STARTED THIS SHIT!!!
it looks like it came out in either 1992 or 93 cause a lot of the people who got asked 'what's your favourite comic book' answered with Spawn so at least 92
The newest Overstreet Comic Book Price Guide with the Adam Hughes Catwoman cover for 2012-2013 has a really great visual gag in which she's trying to steal several First Editions of the 1970 Overstreet Price Guide (NM price $1.825) Batman catches her in the act.
The guy refers to Seth McFarlane as the most popular artist of 1993 so it is at least 93 in the video.
Wrong McFarlane bub
You mean Todd Macfarlane?
it came out March 3 1995
I remember this when I was like 5Oh, man, '90s hairb4 COMics Conventions turned into some three-ring circus, Pop-Culture Façade
9:33 That is the warrior muscle dude from Dragon Strike for sure!
Exciting period!
thanks for this video!!!
Favorite Comics: Batman, Spawn, Green Lantern, Superman, Iron Man, Captain America, Avengers, JLA, JSA, X-Men, the Hulk yeah I jump around on favorites but Batman tops my list
Back when nobody did cosplay at sdcc lol.
There was a girl that told me that exact same thing like 15 years ago. I think it'll come to that eventually, but I think comics will still to be around a while... Much longer than 10 years.
It’s been 10 years almost and they are still going strong :)
I'm surprised I never came across this documentary.
There is no audio?
kinda nice to see the comics raw , no slabs .
I think 1990. I don't have the tape (yes, tape) handy (I think it's boxed up somewhere), but I'll guess 1990, possibly even 1989. If I find it, I'll post it.
FUN times!
just for you stan, Spider - Man. :D
I have to see the full David vs McFarlane debate. There's a transcript uploaded but print loses a lot in translation.
Ahhhhh 1993. The beginning of the end, just before the implosion! Here's a quiz for anyone else who collected comics at the time (no cheating with Wikipedia!) 1. Before he did Spawn, what Marvel title was Todd McFarlane doing? 2. Which comic book company was publishing "Magnus Robot Fighter" at the same time? 3. What superstar was penciling X-men at the time? 4. Did Jim Shooter make the right decision when he left Marvel? 5. Are half of your vacuum-sealed, trading card, holographic cover comics worth even half as much now?
Chris O
Correct on almost all counts! #4? It was a disastrous decision! Where is that comic book company he was representing now? By the way, would you be interested in buying a few issues of Spider-man #1? Heh heh.
Chris O Stray Bullets! THB! David Lapham and Paul Pope are both highly underrated...
1. The Amazing Spider-Man he started with issue #298 (I was never a McFarlane fan)
2. Valiant
3. Jim Lee he started with Uncanny X-Men #248 (Not a fan of his either)
4. Personally I never liked Shooter during the era when Marvel was basically trying to blackmail Jack Kirby over the return of his original art, I met Shooter once at a convention when he was trying to promote Valiant back in the 1990's and something about him really rubbed me the wrong way.
5. I don't own any vacuum sealed, trading card holographic cover comics, When it comes to collecting Golden Age comics are what I go after, they're a far better investment, although I do know some people who go after vintage books in slabbed CGC holders :-P Buying something that you'll never ever read makes zero sense to me, even if you want comics for an investment; where's the fun in never looking at them even once?
Another question is what source does a better job than Overstreet IMHO these days of covering all the back ground of which writer and which artist and which inker, letterer etc worked on what comic book throughout history from the Golden Age to the present day? That would be The Grand Comics Database at comicsdotorg.
I was at this con Comic Fest 1993,I don't remember if it was a traveling thing or if it was a one shot but this seems to be that same day. Both McFarlane and Erik Larsen were there signing,Erik was really cool and Todd came off as a bit of a dick. To add a little more cried I believe Spawn was on issue 14 or 15 at the time,I can't remember if it was before Cappulo dos his run but it was definitely after the issues where different writers each did an issue. Number 8 was probably the best of those, the cover art was the one that mimicked the first Torment issue but to be completely honest I don't remember who wrote it,it was either Alan Grant or Alan Moree but I'm pretty sure it was Grant. Issue 9 was the introduction of Angela. Sorry for that rant it's just cool running into another fan who was there before it was cool
*cred
This is great! What year did it come out? ☺
Filmed in '93, released in '94.
I like finally to see Will Eisner stand around like he used to when I'd see him at Wondercon in the bay area when it was at the Hilton or Hyatt hotlel. Whatever. And it says artist under his name. Jack Kirby worked for Will. Thank the gods for Will STan and Jack
@Ninjer89 Thanks!
Person in 1990s: Oh my god Blood Gun Man #1 I'll be rich in 20 years I need to buy 50 copies.
Same Person After trying to sell comics
Person in 2024: Two dollars...this is a joke right...right???? Okay listen I really thought I was going to be rich so I took out a lot of loans and now I owe a lot of money to some really bad people.
How long did it aired?
i think comic books wont be around in 10 yrs. due to technology and all these new gadgets such as the Ibook. very sad, but maybe true.
@emanuelcako No prob.
Back when being a nerd wasnt "cool"
This movie can only be from 1992 and after because one of the kids is wearing a Spawn baseball cap........Image published Spawn and didn't start till 1992.
I think its 1993 because I saw Superman with the Super mullet after the Reign of Supermen and it gave some space for Spawn to become popular, I also saw a Beavis and Butthead shirt, that show didnt start officially until early 93(before there were 2 pilot shorts in late 92) also taking account that Jack KIrby died in early 94. I also see the marvel 1993 annuals. too
I can't take McFarlane seriously in that Rocky getup.
Lol he was dressed like that because it was the Philadelphia comic con, and a Rocky movie had just been released....
8:19 I hope he got the bastard who cut his hair like that.
The golden age, silver age and the bronze age comic book artist. Were the best. Not like todays so called artist.Who draw nothing but junk. And call it art.
What we need is a mention of when Todd McFarlane portrayed Peter David & John Bryne as members of the KKK in an issue of Spawn,
The history of the comicbook industry is more interesting than any soap opera or reality TV series out there.
