National City :Fatal Car into Water Accident 09252020

LOCATION: WB SR-54 / Sweetwater River

DETAILS:
A woman was walking on the bike/walking trail when she said the car came flying off the freeway, barely missing her and it went into the river. She called 911 and directed the 1st responders to her location. The car was on its roof and in the river.
2 CVFD & 1 NCFD Firefighters went into the water to rescue the driver and anyone else that might be inside. They found no one. Divers were requested from the SD City Lifeguards and the SD Harbor Police.
A male’s body was found by the divers approx. 100 yards upstream from the car. The male was pronounced deceased at the scene. More divers were brought in along with SDFD’s Copter 1 to search the river for more victims, but none were found.
The westbound 54 transitions to the southbound I-5 was closed for several hours. The CHP is investigating.
I worked for years on a volunteer public service dive/rescue team. Watching these pros do their job brought back memories-some not very good-but to this day that was the finest unit, civilian or military, with whom it has been my pleasure to work.
RIP Pastor Randy you lived a selfless life. You will be missed. 😢
Yesterday that poor guy was alive. Never forget how fragile life is.
That was yesterday. Today Darwin called, as he drove like a fool and ended up in the drink. It's also safe to assume that he wasn't wearing his seat belt, as evidenced by the divers finding his corpse 100 yards upstream from point-of-rest of the vehicle.
@@carlv8168 Who knows..maybe he managed to get out of the car and then died from injuries in the water. You don't know if he drove like a fool or if he was wearing a seat belt. Maybe he swerved to avoid another car on the freeway and went off the road, maybe he undid his seat belt and managed to squeeze out of the car before dying/drowning.
Thankful for all the Responders, especially the Lifeguards and Harbor PD for trying to locate survivors. Sad situation.
Damn that sucks. I hate that canal. Almost every day from 5s to 54e the smell when you go over on the bridge is just horrific at times. So disgusting

I always trip out on that over pass.i always tell my wife that one wrong turn and we are flying off this freeway down onto the rocks or hit the water. There are no guard rails on the lower half. RIP
I get nervous when passing this too.
You should see it from path side, facing out, I tell myself watch out for a flying car every time I there. There's really nothing separating you from a vehicle, other than a chain link fence. 👌

Wow, RIP to the driver! It appears to be a lot of luggage retrieved, which more than likely, possibly, flew out of the vehicle. That could indicate that the person may have came from the airport or had recently been traveling. That could indicate that they were possibly tired and accidentally fell asleep while driving. Either way, this is so sad!!! My condolences to this person and their family!!!🙏🏾😩

As tragic as this accident is, they could've taken out that lady that called it in. That lady must have gotten the shock of her life.
Appears to be no kind of barrier at all along that stretch of 54. I'm surprised more vehicles haven't gone down that embankment.
The poor man! It makes me wonder if he managed to get out of his seat belt and escape through the window or car door and then became unconscious and drowned/died from injuries? If the car landed upside down in the water it seems like ejection wouldn't be possible and if he was wearing a seat belt he would have still been strapped in. Leads me to think that maybe he managed to get out but then succumbed from his injuries?
My first thought was that maybe he had a medical emergency or fell asleep & went off of the highway. Very sad. RIP to the victim.

This is so sad. A guardrail is definitely needed. Especially next to such a busy highway. There is barely a shoulder.

I always thought driving by damn I feel like I could go easily fly off into the river. Why can't they add some type of rail on the freeway at that area. One distraction or accident and bam!!! fish food
They do clean it up. They clean it up quite often but transients comeback. There's plenty of volunteer teams who show up and do cleaning as well as CalTrans. There is also a police presence. Just some info on the area. I live nearby.
Sad that he lost his life. I'm not sure of the details, but i swear that 54 has more deadly accidents than the rest of our freeways.

Accident happened at night so that's why the body floated downstream. It's hard to see at night and most people probably never heard the crash because they were asleep.
Tragic. Hopefully not intentional. If in the transition, you will notice way too many drivers don't slow to the safety speed on transitions. Very risky.
