Filmed at The Sonic Temple in Halifax, NS.
Tim Hicks and Alan Doyle have teamed up on a brand new version of the Newfoundland folk classic ‘The Night Patty Murphy Died' just in time for St. Patrick's Day.
The song has been recorded by numerous artists, including Alan Doyle's Great Big Sea on their 1997 and 2000 albums Play and Road Rage ("The Night Pat Murphy Died"). Tim & Alan aimed to make a version that showcased some of Tim’s rock influences while keeping with the traditional sounds of the East Coast. ‘The Night Patty Murphy Died' by Tim Hicks and Alan Doyle is available now.

Oh the night that Patty Murphy died, is a night I'll never forget
Some of the boys got loaded drunk, and they ain't got sober yet;
As long as a bottle was passed around every man was feelin' gay
O'Leary came with the bag pipes, some music for to play
Chorus
That's how they showed their respect for Patty Murphy
That's how they showed their honour and their pride;
They said it was a sin and shame and they winked at one another
And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died
As Mrs. Murphy sat in the corner pouring out her grief
Kelly and his gang came tearing down the street
They went into an empty room and a bottle of whiskey stole
They put the bottle with the corpse to keep that whiskey cold
Chorus
About two o'clock in the morning after emptying the jug
Doyle lifts up the ice box lid to see poor Patty's mug
They stopped the clock so Mrs. Murphy couldn't tell the time
And at a quarter after two they argued it was nine
Chorus
They stopped the hearse on George Street outside Sundance Saloon
They all went in at half past eight and staggered out at noon
They went up to the graveyard, so holy and sublime
Found out when they got there, they'd left the corpse behind!
Chorus
Oh the night that Patty Murphy died, is a night I'll never forget
Well, some of the boys got loaded drunk and they ain't been sober yet;
As long as a bottle was passed around every man was feelin' gay
O'Leary came with the bagpipes, some music for to play
Chorus x2
And every drink in the place was full the night Pat Murphy died

Tim Hicks it sure wasn’t a St. Poopy’s day with this song that’s for sure! Love both of you guys and hope to see both of you in Nashville once we overcome these hard times!
21 yr old nova scotian can confirm the kids still listen
I’m an American with deep Irish roots.
This is a fun song. The sarcasm is typical Irish!
Sin and shame as they winked at one another!
That’s my family.
Love to all. ❤️
This is my new favorite version of the song. What a banger!
Two great vocalists and stellar music played behind them.
May the good lord, or whatever you’re into, bless you! Thank you!
I have loved the GBS version of this song for a long time, but the joy in this version is palpable. Pure Bliss!!!!
I really like this rendition. I was used to the older acoustic versions. And to be fair, I play the slower acoustic version. But the energy of this one can't be denied! Well done, lads.
I just love Alans voice....
Something about the banjo that gets my foot stompin every time!!🤘🤘

Awesome song bro
Like who doesn't love this...🙃💕💕🙃
Awesome rendition!
I would have loved the music video even more if you got the rest of great big sea together to play
Amazeballs!!!
I like the musical accompaniment here better than the Great Big Sea version. But either way, I love this song.
I have always been kinda split in whether or not the song should be interpreted sarcastically, and that Patty Murphy was dislike, hence why is wake is utter chaos, or because he was just as much of a hellion as those attending, and that kind of wake genuinely being what he wanted.
I tend to lean towards the latter though.
Love this
My son patty murphy loves this song 🤣
Super job, poor old Paddy Murphy didn’t get respect at all, was an excuse for a booze up lol
I wonder if anyone knows this is a cover/remake
Its a Collaboration with Alan Doyle as Alan is the original owner of the song with his old group Great Big Sea. :)
@@shadesilverwing592 the song is a traditional newfoundland song with recordings as early as 1926
@@nealhowell9574 Oh jeez I didn't even think of that haha good call oops!
I know this song From The Marksman Liam Neeson

Good use of auto tune on the vocals..
It is Paddy NOT Patty - incredibly disrespectful.
