This song put a voice to a struggle I have faced for years: living up to my high expectations for who I should be. This traces back to 6th grade when I missed a significant portion of that school year due to medical issues. Thankfully, my teacher hand delivered assignments - I made it through. But I perceived a sense of inferiority to my peers due to me being behind. It also instilled fear in me that it would limit my ability to go to college. So what did I do with those feelings? Force an expectation that I should do the absolute best in my academics. That set in motion a negative spiral of social, academic, and general anxiety about failure. Unfortunately, I am still trying to recover from the damage that mentality inflicted in my life. I am fighting to change my broken ways even now. This song made me remember how I often despaired that each day would be the same as the last, and about how those fears were so deeply embedded in me that I did not know how to change. The first few lyrics also reminded me how I increasingly struggled back then to connect with other people. Basically, I wanted a healthy, vibrant social life while doing well in school, yet I didn't know how to go about achieving that. It was especially hard establishing any friendship with my classmates in high school that was relatively worry-free and brought me joy. In fact, I never did. All that said, this song brought to light the fact that my situation really was not anyone's fault. I was simply clinging on to what made me feel the most secure - my academics. I should not blame myself for desiring security in my life. Moreover, I did not know how to find what feels best for me in my social relationships. Above all, I was stuck in a mentality that I am not good enough. That is not anyone's fault either. I am moving forward now, finding avenues for change to the best of my ability.

This song put a voice to a struggle I have faced for years: living up to my high expectations for who I should be. This traces back to 6th grade when I missed a significant portion of that school year due to medical issues. Thankfully, my teacher hand delivered assignments - I made it through. But I perceived a sense of inferiority to my peers due to me being behind. It also instilled fear in me that it would limit my ability to go to college. So what did I do with those feelings? Force an expectation that I should do the absolute best in my academics. That set in motion a negative spiral of social, academic, and general anxiety about failure. Unfortunately, I am still trying to recover from the damage that mentality inflicted in my life. I am fighting to change my broken ways even now.
This song made me remember how I often despaired that each day would be the same as the last, and about how those fears were so deeply embedded in me that I did not know how to change. The first few lyrics also reminded me how I increasingly struggled back then to connect with other people. Basically, I wanted a healthy, vibrant social life while doing well in school, yet I didn't know how to go about achieving that. It was especially hard establishing any friendship with my classmates in high school that was relatively worry-free and brought me joy. In fact, I never did.
All that said, this song brought to light the fact that my situation really was not anyone's fault. I was simply clinging on to what made me feel the most secure - my academics. I should not blame myself for desiring security in my life. Moreover, I did not know how to find what feels best for me in my social relationships. Above all, I was stuck in a mentality that I am not good enough. That is not anyone's fault either.
I am moving forward now, finding avenues for change to the best of my ability.
