    Thank you for this great video. I was fortunate this last weekend to go to the last hours of an estate sale. I got a Waterford small pitcher, for $4 and two old fashioned glasses& two smaller drink glasses(all stemless) for $1 each. And a lidded sugar jar for $3. As I was cleaning them I saw the Waterford etchings!! I knew they were quality pieces because of the clearness of the crystal & the weight..but didn’t know I had Waterford in my hand till then. Thank you for the knowledge you’ve imparted to make collecting even more of a fun treasure hunt!

      Enjoy that Waterford pitcher! The lidded sugar jar might actually be a jam jar. Can imagine your excitement when discovering the acid etch stamp under all the dirt.

    Fun video! That's so interesting that you worked for Waterford. I started collecting Waterford at age 19 when I vacationed with my family in Ireland and we took a factory tour. (I purchased the small mantel clock on the tour as that was all I could afford as a college student.) This was before their renovation, way back in the late eighties. They made sure we knew to take the stickers off as well! :) I also like the strawberry cuts ... I am fortunate to own the Maritana vase as part of my collection and enjoy those tiny cuts on that piece. Again, nice video; I'm glad I found your channel.

The Four Seasons vase is very beautiful, showing something to represent each season. I had no idea that it takes 14 hours to make one goblet. Imagine the time it would take to make your elaborate oval dish with all of the strawberry cuts! Thanks again.

      @@LadyMaryBeth You're very welcome, Lady Mary Beth. That's a shame that those magnificent pieces are no longer in production. Didn't Waterford close their Irish production plant, then move the operations to Europe, and then move back to Ireland? If so, perhaps that had something to do with the downsizing of manufacturing some of the items. Also, perhaps you've noticed that there seems to be a trend with younger people not wanting these pieces. I've been told by sales reps that "if it can't go in the dishwasher, or if it needs polishing", then these items are often passed over in favour of ones that do not require as much care. You're lucky in that you have so many lovely pieces to cherish. I always enjoy your videos, and I'm sure that all of your other viewers will say the same.

    I really enjoy the Waterford pieces I have - a small creamer and sugar see service with my four types of china. (I have four place settings of each!) I originally bought them to go with my Lenox Holiday as I do not care for that pattern's sugar and creamer. I found a very pretty small bowl at a thrift store for 75 cents! When I found a Rogaska biscuit barrel at a thrift store, I purchased it, but there really IS a difference - the Rogaska crystal has wavy imperfections in the glass and is not as clear as the Waterford. But I still enjoy it and use it, though it's helped me appreciate Waterford crystal even more!

      You found some deals over the years. Glad that you have a great appreciation for Waterford. I have Lenox Holiday as well, but not the creamer and sugar. Will use my Waterford set since it goes with anything. You may have found that Miller Rogaska often has similar patterns to Waterford. Mr. Miller was the distributor for Waterford Crystal in North America for years. When the company took over with their own representatives, he started a rival company. I remember it being sold at Macy's in the 90's when I worked for Waterford.

    When you put water for your flowers, do you do something special to avoid the marking that it usually leaves? Also, if I find a crystal vase that has the water stain, should I avoid it or buy it and remove the water with a magical product? (same question in 2 different situations)

    • @LadyMaryBeth
      @LadyMaryBeth  2 роки тому +1

      I would suggest not leaving water in the vase longer than the life of the flowers. Change the water every other day. I do avoid vases with water marks. They say vinegar removes these lines, but I have not been successful with this.

      Waterford is changing with the tabletop trends. My friend, the late Jim O'Leary, designed Araglin. I doubt they would have retired this pattern in his lifetime. Most stems are produced in Eastern Europe now and are dishwasher safe. Should be a relief that Araglin is not lowered to these standards. On another note, Waterford was acquired by Fiskars, the Finnish scissors company. They control many tabletop brands now. It's all about profits and surviving the market.

    I tried to ascertain if a few pieces in my collection are Waterford. Tiffany Sybil pattern also has the 16 prongs (the Tiffany pattern is also made in Ireland.)

    me again! Found a biscuit barrel for $6. However can't find the waterford mark. It has the 16 pointed star on bottom and lid and sparkles brilliantly. It is a commentative barrel for a Ben Hogan golf tournament (1990) that was only held in New Haven for 4 years. Does that effect it's value? Did any other glass company make a pattern similar to Lismore.

    • @LadyMaryBeth
      @LadyMaryBeth  2 роки тому

      It is most likely Waterford from what you describe. Etching and personalization does lessen the resale value. Though, it can be meaningful and lovely to the recipient. Miller Rogaska made a similar stemware pattern to Lismore. Mr. Miller was the North American distributor for Waterford and started his own company when he lost the contract. Many patterns are similar. I have seen one Rogaska biscuit barrel that did not resemble Lismore. Hi Marybeth I hope that you can please please answer this question for me.
    I just bought a red Marquis Waterford crystal sled I went to wash it and saw that the paint is coming off the glass…. does Waterford do flash on color? I thought they had like the real red color….isn’t that what a crystal company use? Yes or no?

    • @LadyMaryBeth
      @LadyMaryBeth  6 місяців тому +1

      So sorry this happened! Waterford generally used a cased crystal process. That being said, they outsourced this method. It was never their area of expertise. Marquis by Waterford was originally made by Nachtmann in Germany. Later, was made in Eastern Europe. There is another process called staining. It coats a piece of glass with a chemical whose true color is developed by heat. This is the least expensive way of coloring glass. Colored Marquis was not the best quality.

    • @luciaregalado3479
      @luciaregalado3479 6 місяців тому

      I wish you would speak to this in your future videos if you already haven’t. I haven’t heard of flash painting or staining on crystal but have on glass. I would never expect this with high end glass… truly the dark side of crystal that I think is not talked about much if any. I may be wrong. I so wanted a piece of Waterford crystal that if I would have known this information I would have asked the seller. As it was she knew nothing about flash color on crystal. I truly enjoy following you and watching your videos. I told my husband that you are a very good teacher and I have learned immensely since watching you. Thank you and keep up the good work.

I bought one for my wife one Christmas and have since been concerned with its authenticity until this post of yours. Angela - I have 5 books that I can recommend that I have. As of this post (7/28/21) I have verified all are available on eBay today.
      1. This I consider my Bible. Waterford: An Irish Art - The Collector’s Guide. Ida Gresham. 1981. 256 pages. There is both a hard cover and a leather bound issue. Leather is limited numbered edition of 2,000 signed by author with certificate. Both are on eBay.
      2. Irish Glass by Dudley Westropp. 1978. 248 pages.
      3. A fun little book. The Incredible Waterford Contest Book. Harry Pesin. 1978. 141 pages.
      4. Maestro of Crystal. The Story of Miroslav Havel. Brian F Havel. 2005. 272 pages. Miroslav created the Lismore pattern and revived Waterford Crystal after WWII.
      5. Waterford Crystal. This does not have author, publisher, year, or page numbers. My personal story for this book - I was also a close friend of Jim O’Leary. I purchased this book on EBay in 1998. On Jim’s next visit to States after my purchase, I showed him the book. He said “OMG where the … did you get that?” He said this book was made by the company and presented to the employees only as a Christmas/bonus gift one year. He said he remembered as a young man how proud of it he was and walking home with it tucked under his arm for his mother. Said he hadn’t seen in years and had no idea what had happened to it. I managed to find it online at a used book store 150 miles away and drove up to purchase and to present to him the next week. He was so grateful.
      Hope you are able to purchase some of these and enjoy them.
