Corbyns manifesto was mainstream Scandinavian policy. The fact it was presented as extreme left wing tells you about how stupid this country is

      @epincion 3 місяці тому

Corbyn self describes himself as a ‘true Socialist’ and not the Labour Party description of itself as being ‘Democratic-Socialist’.
Scandinavians believe in a market based economy with checks & balances such that societal fairness outweighs individual freedoms - important as the latter is.
True Socialists are essentially a flavour of Communism and do not believe in a market economy but rather in a command economy where a self selected elite who know best have control of the levers of power. As the Shadow Chancellor under Corbyn John McDonnell (who describes himself as a Marxist) explicated that he envisaged an economy where the state was the main partner and catalyst for innovation and productivity and not the private sector. I agree with a lot of what McDonnell says especially on tax but make no mistake it’s a command economy he wants.

I am from Sweden, I had a look at Corbyn's 2019 manifesto - it is similar to the Vänsterpartiet in Sweden ("Left party"). They got 6.8% of the vote. In no way is Corbyns manifesto like the main parties here.

Thank you Ava, for using “public purse” rather than”taxpayer’s money” We need to hear more people use that term. In my opinion it has a very different perspective. “The taxpayer” is a neoliberal term to excuse the destruction of public services. “The public purse” emphasises that it is our (i.e. everyone’s) resource.

It has declined for people under 40 across the board in developed countries: by around 7 or 8 points in the USA and Germany, but it has COLLAPSED in the UK by 22 points. I think that by itself could explain the lack of support for Conservatism among the young in the UK.

Long time listener, first time commenter here. Just wanted to say your coverage/analysis of the Greens leaves a lot to be desired atm. A lot of people are out here right now disillusioned with Starmer's Labour and looking for a new political home. On the day the Green Party launched their campaign you spent 10 mins on a joke about how they are nonces and a few seconds on their policies, Oli seems to really like saying the word NIMBY and so seems to maybe be overstating that aspect of it a little and Ava here is saying the policies aren't progressive enough. I consider myself progressive and they are the only party talking about the environment, housing and wealth inequality in any meaningful way, which from a progressive point of view are arguably the 3 biggest crises our country faces. I think for the first time in my lifetime Greens seems like a viable option (I understand they won't win more than 2-4 seats, but I am thinking long term). It makes sense that the BBC still isn't taking them seriously but I have more respect for you guys and genuinely expect better from you. It might not sound like it from this rant but I'm a big fan. Keep up the *mostly* good work.

There’re villages near me in Northumberland which have less than 40 percent permanent occupancy due to holiday lets. I know that the problem of affordable housing is a very real one but there has to be a more considered approach which isn’t going to leave future generations hanging their heads at what they’ve lost. If building houses trumps all else; and the demand will never be satisfied, then we may as well slash and burn our countryside now and put those of us with environmental concerns out of our misery.

This is absolutely spot on. As someone who's 29 my patience has run out. I've done what I was "supposed" to do. Got a good job (40% tax rate), got a 3 bed house, don't spend exorbitantly and yet still wouldn't say I was better off than my dad who raised 3 kids on a single income (police officer) and had a 4 bedroom house and able to take us all on multiple holidays a year by working a bit of overtime.
My situation is at probably at the absolute top of end of what would be achievable for someone from a upper working class background.
All my mates are struggling and others I just can't even imagine how they cope. Donating to a foodbank just to do what I can as feel for everyone in our gen who weren't as lucky as me.
The numbers just don't add up for our Zillennial generation. shafted by student loan tripling, shafted by austerity, shafted by brexit, shafted by covid, shafted by highest tax + interest rate burdon since WW2.
Then get gaslit by social media that it's our fault we aren't a success and need to sniff mushroom gummies and start trading stocks. Might give it a try!

No, what he says is true. A lot of the right wing were disappointed with Nigel. They felt abandoned because he was going to the US.
When people feel they have no one to vote for that is a bad situation, they may never vote again. It was the right tactical move. Tice has no charisma, people voted reform in spite of him not because of.

The policies the Green Party would introduce to help councils increase the supply of affordable housing include:
    - Providing funding to councils to meet their needs for affordable social housing and lift the overly restrictive rules on council borrowing for housebuilding - ensuring *at least an extra 150,000* council homes a year are made available through a mix of new build, refurbishment, conversions and buying up existing homes
    - Ending Right to Buy, enabling local authorities to keep council homes available and affordable in the community for good
    - Taming the private rental market through rent controls, in places where the rental market is overheated, to ensure a fair rent, as well as ending no-fault evictions.
    - Creating a ‘community right to buy’, giving councils, housing associations and community housing groups first refusal to buy certain properties that come onto the market, including former social housing bought under Right to Buy; properties in need of energy efficiency improvements; or any property left empty for an unacceptably long time.

You don't have to build on green spaces to increase housing. Our high streets are full of empty buildings that are going to start falling apart. Unfortunately grants for social housing are focused on new builds, they don't cover change of purpose. Empty Debenhams can become blocks of flats quicker than a new block can be built, and they're generally close to public transport & necessary services already, but grant requirements need changing.

One of the problems facing any Government is that no long term planning takes place. We need a system of cross party agreement on border security, energy security, food security , defense, NHS and immigration to commit the £Billions and ensure our Country is secure. It's almost the total opposite of the last 14 years of Conservatives in power.

Many may now vote for these candidates because Farage not only showed up but joined the GE party and stood as leader. To finish, I must say I think you're great Gal. Not sure about his Beard. because they'd be asked how they'd fund it, and the answer is either higher taxes (which are inevitable because the government doesn't own any assets anymore) or increased borrowing, both of which would see them dragged hard in the media - I agree that it would be a good policy, but like so many good policies it doesn't fit the narrow orthodoxy of neoliberalist economics

The vast vast majority of doctors are making nowhere near 8000 a day even the ones working locums. I’ve not heard of anyone making that amount of money in locums. Locum pay is so high partly because the risk you’re taking on working in such high demand environments is huge, you are massively exposed to error which could lead to serious consequences not only to patients but doctors themselves (eg losing your career).

I'm not sure disenfranchised young people will hold their noses for proto-fascists even if it's in self interest.
My view is that they hold their nose for Starmer because he could make things slightly better and he isn't going to make things dramatically worse. Worst case scenario is more of the same.

People never became more conservative as they got older; they became more conservative as they became more prosperous - but now they don't get more prosperous as they get older. They're 35 with student loans on zero hours contracts living in a cupboard in a house shared with 27 other people.

From my limited scope, I really disagree with Ava on the Greens. Here in Mid Beds we have a diverse range of Green members, who seem to be well aware of what their priorities should be. However, we're just one constituency, I'm not sure how the Greens operate elsewhere, but our county councillor, and the members that I've had the pleasure of meeting, are far from a bunch of NIMBYs... I still love podcasts and hate nonces though 😂

To add to Oli's million houses theory - I think Reform could stand a chance long term if they put proportional representation, or electoral reform as their central policy & tried to pull a Clegg. I reckon there's a lot of people who would grit their teeth and vote to break the 2-party system, even more so in the next election when people see that Labour in government are barely distinguishable from the tories.
