In WW2, British fighter planes would flip V-1 doodlebug unguided missiles with their wings to knock them off course. I’m pretty sure 4:14 was inspired by that.
Just for anyone who never saw the episode, O'Shay was rescued, what they heard was his station announcemewnt recording, triggered by the damage the capsule had taken on re-entry.
The beauty in how the story was told in this episode is that, at this point of it, we, the audience did not know that. They handled the building the suspense brilliantly.
This is awesome because this is one time where Thunderbird 2 herself is actually used (like a bumper car) to pull off a job as opposed to using either the magnetic grabs or any rescue equipment that Thunderbird 2 would normally carry. I also love it because Thunderbird 2 is my favourite of the Thunderbird machines.
The astronaut Ms. Arnold refers to is Virgil "Gus" Grissom, who tragically died in the Apollo 1 fire in 1967. The ill-fated starship USS Grissom in the film "Star Trek 3" was named for him.

After a few so so episodes in the middle of its run, the stories picked up again towards the end - this, »Atlantic Inferno« and »Path Of Destruction« were amongst the best. I thought it was a shame that nobody attempted to do an adult reboot of Thunderbirds... it could have worked. Like the Battlestar Galactica reimagining back in 2004. (Yet keeping Barry Gray's absolutely gripping score!)
I loved this episode, the drama, the acting, the effects... THE EXPLOSIONS!! Sad that the new reboot can't catch the sense of fear for our heroes since in the end, no one dies in the reboot... absolutely no one. I would like to see a rereboot of Capatin Scarlet in 2020 with no death, I wonder what it would be like.
Pershing 33 it's pathetic, where are their guns? The standard issue ray gun of international rescue? The interchangeable pods of thunder bird 2? Massive explosions and huge, unrealistic machines? It's lost it's entire aesthetic and is no better than the 2004 movie.
Armystuntman the uninvited has tons of deaths. When they destroy the processing plant, the entire piramid is filled with toxic fumes and all of them killed apart from Tracy and the two explorers.
@@armystuntman8601 When I mean death. What I meant to say was have a sense of realism of the real world. Here Virgil believed Oshea to be dead. A concept not of violence but of reality. I just feel that the new reboot is lacking that sense of tension. We know that they are going to rescue everyone.
I remember feeling rather sad about O'Shea, until later on in the episode when... for those who ain't seen this episode, I'll say no more detail, but I would recommend this one.
I'd hardly say Thunderbird 2 fought against the space stadium. If they did, that would be unintentional. The first intention was to destroy the craft in order to save the many lives in the refinery and then in order to 'save O'Shea's life' as well, they thought of the bumper car technique. IR's only intentions are to save lives.
I wouldn't say a showdown. Showdowns tend to involve more aggressive attitudes. Judging by TB2 and the satellite's movements, I'd say more like Godzilla.
1 vs 1000,000... it sounds easy, even a no-brainer, on paper. But when your right there, in the thick of it, actually making the choice, doing the deed... it gets so... so much harder. No matter how logical it sounds... a life, is still a life.
stainlesssteelfox1 I thought he started a tape while backing away from Alan, due to his fear of going out into space during Thunderbird 3's rescue. Eh. Either way, it still makes for some intense TV viewing. :)
O'Shea did, but that wasn't shown until after this part of the episode. The reason why Virgil and Brains couldn't find that out is that they were out of range of Tracy Island and TB3, and TB% was off the air and could not relay their communications to either.
IIRC, when Alan cut into the airlock door, it was the INNER door, with the outer door working. One presumes that Alan left the outer door closed so as to make KLA's reentry more predictable.
@@colinp2238 It was designed to re-enter, and that is mentioned earlier in the episode. The problem was that the explosion in space that damaged KLA also knocked out it's parachute system, so after re-entry, they would have no way of slowing down to a soft landing. This actually happened to a manned Soviet spacecraft, Soyuz 1, in 1967, and that capsule hit the ground at 200 MPH and was destroyed utterly.
@@colinp2238 That is not one bit related to anything that I said. The Apollo CM, for example, was designed to be able to aerodynamically maneuver within the atmosphere, which is why it's final flight path was not one that involved plummeting. Burning up on re-entry has NOTHING to do with a parachute failure that only affects the POST re-entry landing phase.
After the first Production Block (Episodes 1-26), David Holliday abroad to take up theatre roles, so was unavailable to reprise the role of Virgil for the two Thunderbirds feature films and second production block
The process of decelerating would likely have dislodged KLA, and as they were so close to the refinery, that could have led to the disaster they were trying hard to avoid.

The quality of the incidental music is so important. Kudos to Barry Gray !
Especially the bit where Thunderbird 2 flies through the refinery, which was intense.
I just realized that this was the Thunderbirds equivalent of the trolley problem, except instead of a trolley, it's a runaway satalite...
Tracy visits Tesco.

'Rick-kapow-O'Shea' for weeks.

The RAF actually did this against V1 buzzbombs and were fairly successful with this tactic
