For anyone curious, the ramen chef on the "gourmet" vending machine is none other than the "Oni of Ramen" Minoru Sano! He had a legendary shop in Kanagawa back in the day, and was sort of a strict Gordon Ramsey-type figure in the ramen world.
I saw an interview with the married couple who manages the machines or the tire shop or both anyways, most are just glorified microwave meals however some of the food in the older machines are cooked, and processed into the machines by the wife who is an amazing cook even in the video you can tell whats made by her and whats just a frozen meal.

I loved the vending machines in Japan. During winter, I'd sometimes get myself a hot can of coffee, and in the summer, I'd get a Fanta. Of course, back then, it was the 1980s, so there weren't that much of a variety as there is now. Nowadays, you can get pizza from a vending machine, or bananas, or prophylactics, umbrellas, clothes, and more...wish they had this here in the US.
It's definitely not something you notice until you pay attention, but once you do, you're like "wait a minute, he's lost like 15% of his weight since last time I paid attention. His face has changed a ton, too."

They've had some pretty bad looking things in the past but they never insulted the food in front of the people or at the establishment that served the food. As far as I've heard from other videos, a lot of the food for machines like this is made by local companies, and stocked daily by the owner and his family. They do the repairs themselves, too, with whatever parts they can find or manufacture/juryrig themselves.

As far as I've heard from other videos, a lot of the food for machines like this is made by local companies, and stocked daily by the owner and his family. They do the repairs themselves, too, with whatever parts they can find or manufacture/juryrig themselves.

Seeing the machine from 22:00 was surreal since there was a short documentary style video by Great Big Story on UA-cam that showed that exact machine and the owner who runs it. Very cool.
It was disappointing to see their negative reactions to so many of the machines though, especially the homemade curry machine. It felt like they had low expectations going in and were just looking to confirm their biases.
